    Default Lasik?

In my gross attempt to abolish my nerdy appearance and forever do away with glasses/contacts, I'm contemplating getting lasik surgery in 6 months - 1 year...

Has anyone here had this surgery? I've heard price ranges anywhere between $500/eye (per eye? what, I'm only going to get one eye done??), to $4000. I've also heard/read about some adverse side effects such as permanent glare, distortion etc.

In your opinion, is it worth it?

I had 2 friends who had it done and they loved it! They paid $1500 per eye (I believe). They didn't have any side effects that they mentioned...

I would really research the docs that perform it and make the decision on merit and experience/references and not on $$ amount. You usually get what you paid for.

In my opinion, it could be very worth it.

Dated a guy who had this done, but can't remember what he paid. He said he liked it, had a side effect of I believe, seeing black dots. Said he was supposed to go back & have something else done to correct it. A radio DJ in my area had it done by Dr. Kraff, recommended family & friends, does his commercials. As VG says, research. You have to decide the pros & cons for yourself. Good Luck.

My mom had it done, she loves it. The side effect she got was that her very close vision was altered and now might eventually need glasses for close-up detail work. The Doctor offered to do one eye for close-up and one for far away (?!?) but when she wore contacts to simulate this effect, she got a headache. That part always sounded weird to me. Also, she said her eyes were very dry in the beginning but eventually went normal. I do detail work (sewing and beading) so that aspect has made me pause in deciding to get it done myself.

Another friend got it done and also loved it. He mentioned no side effects. *However*, after the surgery he detached his retina with a champagne cork in Paris and now has to wait for a while to get the Lasik re-done on that eye. That happened a couple of years ago and he is still waiting for the go ahead.

So, barring unforeseen circumstances, all reports have been positive that I have heard. Prices were all around $1000/ eye.

I'm supposed to have it done in December. I was told about $1500/eye. It will sure beat the hell out of poking in the contacts every single morning. Plus, I'm so vain, I never wear my glasses where anyone can see me!

Oh, how I look forward to waking up and being able to see the clock across the room without squinting and the mad hunt for where I put my glasses!

I'm glad A_Guy started this topic. Very helpful info... Thanks everyone!!!

    Thanks ladies!

Did a little searching and found this fda sponsored website about Lasik:
    http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/lasik/
Has a wealth of information about the procedure.

It also mentions who should NOT get the surgery here:
    http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/LASIK/when.htm
It mentions that LASIK surgery typically aggravates dry eyes if you have a preexisting condition. dammit.. Well, best be talking to my doctor before deciding on this one.

Anyone with dry eyes have the operation?

How great it would be to wake up and see...or not have to wear my glasses in bed to see the TV :'(

My mom just had this done and she LOVES THE RESULTS!!!! She wore coke bottle thick glasses all of her life for near-sightedness and now she only needs weak reading glasses. The cost---->$3,000 for both eyes (And she had them done at the same time) and had ZERO problems. I know about 10 others who've had it and never once a problem.....

Find a reputable doctor for it, do the research on the procedure and aftercare, and GOOD LUCK!!!!!

That's what I hear... It may cost a little more to go for the well known, repuputable doctor, however the results are priceless. I've been hearing a few horror stories about people who have opted for the lower cost ($500/eye) option, and had to have it redone 2, 3 even 4 times! It also sounds like most of the higher rep doctors provide a life time guarantee, so if any "tweeks" are required, follow up operations are free.

    And Thanks!

I've worked for (and now my mom does) an opthamologist who performs these procedures. They charge about $1500-2000 per eye. Many people get confused and see national chains of optometrists offer the "same" surgery for $500 per eye. In this price, only one correction is included. If you need more than one thing "tweaked" in your eye, they will multiply the number of corrections by the $500. Another thing to consider is where the surgery takes place. One of the chains that offers in here in my city (Tucson) makes you go up to Phoenix to have it done. Many private practice doctors will do it on-site and be on call 24 hours a day after your procedure.
I would recommend going to a few consultations to determine your canidacy for this (usually these are free to the customer) and compare your options. I think it is just like plastic surgery-you get what you pay for.

My husband had it done in March and loves it. His favorite thing to do is to fall asleep in bed while watching tv, never could do that before. The only side effect he's had is that he is now addicted to buying sunglasses!

I just had this done. I paid 4000 dollars. My eyes are extremely dry and my vision is so blurry right now that i cant drive. its been two weeks too! they put duct plugs in my eyes to help the dryness but its not getting much better. i am really worried that something bad is going to happen. i went to a very reputable place too. they told me not to worry because vision fluctuations are normal at this time but i cant help but be worried cause everyone else i know that has gotten lasik has not had this problem.

Ive never had this, but my Aunt did and i did everything in my power to talk her out of it. The pressure that they put on your eye to do the surgery can cause retinal detachment in future years. Its not that it WILL its just that is has happened because the retina can't handle the presure it endures during the surgery. Im not trying to be the bad news girl, im just stating my opinion of it. I personally would never do it, because the risk of retinal detachment is too high. People that had it 5 years ago are dealing with detaching retinas which causes total blindness. You might want to make sure you do plenty of research on it, and if you do and come to the conclusion that you want to go through with it, by all means, do it, just make sure you're going into it will all the information you can.

I looked into doing this a couple years ago. I have three close friends that have had this done, on opposite sides of the country. They all say they are satisfied with the results, but they also have side effects--one of them sees black dots on occasion, and they all have worse vision at night (lights are much blurrier).

I have pretty severe astigmatism in both eyes, though my vision itself is not bad. I can't put my fingers in my eyes so contacts are out. So I just went out and bought some very expensive, stylish rimless frames and called it good. Same thing for my sunglasses.

Someday I might look into it again, but not today.

I had lasik surgery done, I am actually blind as a bat on a normal day! LOL.....I love the results! I paid around $5,000. But it was worth everything in the end. I was extremely nervous because my friend kept telling me all these 'horror stories', but luckily everything went well.

    Good luck on the surgery!

I've known 4 people who've had it done... 2 were absolutely fine, 1 had to go back in 3x for revisions until they got it right and 1 still has to wear glasses at night to drive. All of them paid about the same amount, $1500-2000 per eye so your mileage may vary. I've thought about it as well, but am a bit chicken to go through it since there is always the possibility for something to go wrong.

One alternative you may want to consider, or even just use until you have the $$ to have the surgery done is the Night and Day contacts. I don't know if you've tried them or not, but they are the best ever! You can wear them up to 30 days without having to take them out, and they are so thin and light you really don't feel them at all. I usually can't wear regular contacts for more than 4 hrs before my eyes feel like the Sahara desert, but I haven't had any problems at all with these.

A little update on my plan:

I just went to the eye doctor yesterday to make sure I'm a candidate for the surgery... apparently I would be perfect for the surgery because I only have a very slight stigmatism and a relatively low perscription (-2.00 both eyes)... the last time I went to the eye doctor was 2 1/2 years ago, and I thought my current perscription was working fine... unfortunately, though, my eyes have weakened slightly to -2.25 (left eye) and -2.5 (right eye)... now I have to wait at least a year before I can get the surgery

Also, apparently there is a "new" technique out there that is a step up from the current procedure... Currently lasik surgery would put you at 20/20, with the potential of some slight glare and dryness problems. With the new procedure, there are absolutely no side effects (allegedly ), and correction can be as good as 20/10... the draw back is that it usually costs 25-35% more than the more "traditional" procedure.

See i need to have this done, but I'm worried about the night vision side effect that I heard from a couple people. Plus if i do have it done I think I have to be heavily sedated and tied down.. the idea of being awake during it freaks me out the most. I have had surgery before but never twlight sedation.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.
