Most Americans are very uncomfortable with nudity, dating back to our puritan beginnings. My European friends are astounded when they go to a beach here and see how much clothing everyone wears, especially small children. And it's not just a religions thing either, religion is very strong in much of Europe but there's not as much focus on sex. Combine our general discomfort with nudity with the money aspect of stripping and the general belief that clubs are run by organized crime and that drugs are involved, and you have the devil himself, in many people's view. It's not likely to change anytime soon.

I'm in the middle of a book right now, wherein the author presents his own theory that certain religions had a need to control people in the past, and that it is much easier to control sexually frustrated people than sexually contented ones.
Read the Blank Slate : The Modern Denial of Human Nature by Steven Pinker. People get confused about issues like this because they view them from the context of modern society, overlooking just what a different world it was a couple of generations ago (and for millions of years before that). Things like social attitudes against sexual promiscuity don't come into being because they are useless taboos, or done because of some mastermind organization who is trying to control the world (that happens in movies). They come into being because (overall) a purpose is served and society benefits from the purpose...
Thank you for the book recommendation, and your enlightening post! Will not be able to hit the library and/or bookstore until this weekend, though.

I think that most of it comes from two of the groups listed 1st being the men who get turned down by strippers and then go on defensive and say rude and nasty things about dancers...... the 2nd group is the wives and g/f's who feel that dancers are a threat to their relationships, which is kinda bogus IMO as there are many more husbands & BF's out there asking us out than dancers looking to date or have sex w/ married men or other womens BF's........... those combined get thrust into media via books, movies, TV and so it perpetuates the sterotype
