Default To model or not to model...

My club is doing some spreads in magazines, and I was pulled aside yesterday to speak with some really high up exec. in the industry or whatever last night. *lemme NOT get ahead of myself*

The manager on duty, pulled me aside and said there's this "party" next saturday where he's getting a bunch of dancers together to go to this guy's (the execs.) penthouse and do a shoot of us in the beautiful scenery. If the guy liked us (all or particulars) then he wanted to use some or all of us in spreads with cars, and hotrods. (clothed and nude alike) If the dancer(s) accepted, the jobs were: name your price basically.

Here's my prob. I'm flattered that he approached me (I guess the exec. was at the club and he asked the manager to approach me specifically ) and I WANT the money so badly. I wouldn't even mind TAKING pictures, but I don't want the PRINT MATERIAL out there with me on it for just anyone to see. I'm definately NOT making a career out of dancing, and I don't want possible pictures and god knows what other "documentation" of my dancing life now, to follow me around where ever I go. (possibly tainting my chances of scoring another more "professional job" later.)

    Opinions?

If you don't want your possible pictures out there, then the only no-risk option is not to do it. A picture is forever.

Let me clarify: I wouldn't mind TAKING pictures that were for JUST me, (a little sexy photo album.) but NOT for the public. If the public wants to see me, they can come to the club. hehe

Jay: yeah, that's VERY true. I think I know what most of the responses are gonna be, but I just want some re-enforcement I suppose. Thanks

I think you already answered your own question Playboy.. you have valid concerns, and these days, everything seems to come out of the closet later on in life. Sometimes no matter how much money is available to someone, putting ones best interest- (especially if consequences may occur later on down the road) ahead of money is priceless.. do you know what I mean? Look at this way, once you get out of dancing, people will forget your face in about six months.. if you are in print, you are out there like you said.

If you aren't comfortable, then I would graciously thank the exec and gracefully decline. Just say, "I am flattered you offered me such a great opportunity, but at this time, I am in the middle of some life decisions and this would not be something of interest to me" or something a long those lines.

I hope that whatever you decide that you feel good inside and have no regrets.

Common sense on this one babe. If you don't take the pics they can't get out there. Enjoy the flattery, but don't go there unless you are willing to risk those pics getting out in the public.

One of my closest dancer friends did some modelling for Deja Vu about eight years ago. To this day, her photo is still being used on their billboards around Vegas two years after she retired from the industry and she regrets every doing that photo shoot. Once they own the rights, they own the rights forever so make sure that if you decide to do the photo shoot you should be prepared to have those photos floating around for years.

Ditto. A friend of mine did a few ads for the club she worked in and the ads are still being used in the local paper and school paper. She no longer works at that club, but lots of people recognize her now.

You should pass. It might not even be what you expect. The photographer might try to offset your wage with requests you may not be comfortable with (explicit poses, activity.) Look what happened to Vanessa Williams, and Cameron Diaz. Not worth the risk.
Cindy Margolis made a lot of money with a no-nudity clause in her photo contracts. It's possible to have photos done your way all the time, with nothing you doubt in the slightest. Anyhow, just enjoy the compliment. You must be quite a dish!

Haha Cameron and Vanessa are still set for life though. It sucks that such great emphasis is put on womens liberation and freedom of expression through work and photos...especially when there are plenty of other things that need emphasis today.

I agree with everyone to an extent. I modeled for 3 years..... the last year of my modeling career was all nude...tastefully done of course. If you have a solid contract tht emphasizes what can and can not be done with the pictures, you should be alright. I made more money in a shoot than i did all week dancing and i never compromised my morals for some shady photographer looking to exploit young naive girls. If he is truly interested in you and your best interests, than a contract should not be a problem.....otherwise walk and never look back.

The whole thing about going to some guys penthouse to do some pix. bugged me too. Just sounds kinda fishy. And when I was asking questions they BOTH were sorta dancing around the answers.

Thanks guys. I now have all the right components to put together a "serious talk" that I'll have with the manager tonight. The way he keeps pestering me about taking pictures (both for this guy, AND the club website) is kinda getting on my nerves. He just keeps going: "so what? you don't WANT to make and easy x-tra couple grand?!?"

Up 'til now, I only had ONE reason (that sounded kinda weak to me as it left my mouth) that I didn't wanna do it: 'cause I simply DON'T want my picture out there.

    Thanks again.

I say no absolutely not don't do it for these reasons:

there is no "contract." If Mr. Big Shot likes you (& of course he will ) he may use your picture and then you'll be compensated.

You basically will be doing a free photo shoot with other girls and I can practically guarantee you it will become (or try to become) more risque than what you anticipated.

It sounds to me like a front, somebody trying to take advantage of girls who dream of becoming models.

If you're gonna get paid a couple grand like mgr says, have a written contract before the shoot. If there is no contract and you decide to shoot anyhow, please please please don't sign any sort of release. In fact, don't sign anything. You'll be signing away the rights to your photos, for free.

A name your price photo shoot sounds borderline pornographic to me.

If Mr. Big Shot wants to see if he likes your pics, a polaroid should suffice. Playboy is happy with polaroid submissions. No way is this guy bigger than playboy.

I smell a rat, girl. Tread carefully.

Won't be doing this "shoot" because
    A) I have NO desire to model for anyone but myself, and my man
    B) Basically all the reasons you listed above: no contract (at least none spoken of) and you're right. The whole "name your price thing" will probably result in the situation getting out of control.

poo. I'll just have to go to work instead. hahaha
