    Default Navel piercing

I think my navel piercing may be infected. I have had it for about 4 years with no complications but suddenly the whole area around my belly button is red and sore and it feel's like the skin has grow around the bar.
It feels like it's being pulled on whenever I move.
Should I take it out or just continue cleaning it well and applying neosporin?
I would hate to have to get it repierced but I am not sure if keeping it in can cause serios complications.
If anyone has any info or has had this similar problem please let me know what you did.
I really don't want to part with my jewel my belly button would be so plain without it. ???

    DO NOT USE NEOSPORIN!

If you think it's infected but you want to keep it then leave in the jewelery but wash w/ antibacterial soap. Make sure you keep it CLEAN. Is it pussing? After 4 years it should be healed. Maybe you're allergic to something or it's been rubbing against your clothing the wrong way.

I heard that the belly button piercing can grow out, was looking at mine the other day looks like it a bit...hmmmmm, but anyway I agree with lildevil try changing your jewelry also try some hydrogen proxide it eats away the infection but not too much and not too often as you need the piercing to dry.

So then it's probaly okay to leave it in for now?
I go to work tommorow and im worried about it getting caught on one of my outfits or something or getting irritated while dancing.
I am dreading going on the stage I know it's gonna hurt when I strech at all.
Maybe a few drinks will help

Nooooo NEVER use hydrogen peroxide on a piercing! You should only use it on an open wound that you want to heal up completely, not a piercing. Just do sea-salt soaks, keep it clean, and don't play with it.

Do not use hydrogen peroxide! You use that for an open wound, not a piercing. Mine was iinfected for months w/ peroxide after an unsympathetic dr. told me to use it. Call a good piercer, they have better advice than dr.'s, and you shouldn't have to take any antibiotics (I did for mine, and they didn't work at all). Do sea salt or epsom salt soaks twice a day and wash lightly w/ antibactieral soap if it rubs on anything weird at work or starts pussing. And please, no more neosporin, it keeps air from getting to the piercing, which it needs to heal (it's only a really thin layer of skin healing). When the infection is almost gone you can start using bactine again to clean it.
...and the day came, when the risk it took to remain closed in a bud became worse than the risk it took to blossom.

My advice would be to seek an expert piercers opinion... if the area is still inflamed and get even more infected seek a doctor ASAP......

I had one for 3 years, took it out. I tore it while sleeping one night is all i could figure. I woke up it hurt like hell, got red and i could not move my belly area. BS, i went to the doctor, who put me on a small dose of antibiotics, because he was afraid of staph, something you don't want. I took the antibiotics, cleared up, and said the hell with it, took the bar out. Healed great!

Seriously pain and redness after years of having a piercing is not very good, take care of it. ASAP.

Definitely get your piercers advice, but don't use peroxide, or alcohol. Wash with a pure gentle soap (no perfumes), do sea salt soaks, maybe a little bit of diluted tea tree oil if it's bad.
Also, I have heard that you shouldn't remove the jewelry if a piercing is infected, apparently the holes can close up, causing the infection to stay trapped below the surface and not drain normally.

Thanks for the great advice everyone.I am happy to report that my bellybutton is now pain free and back to normal and I never had to take my barbell out.
I kept it clean with anti-bactiral soap and it just cleared up.
So thanks again to everyone that awnsered.
