Default Weirdest thing happened last night...

Just take this as a lesson to always wear jeans/chaps/or both while riding...

BF and I were heading up the HWY on his Harley after purchasing our wedding rings at a store down south of Denver. Out of nowhere, something slammed into my left shin. It felt like I had been hit with a sledgehammer! Barely able to hang on, I sobbed as he got us off of the HWY and onto a side street. He helped me off the bike to the ground and we pulled up the leg of my chaps. My shin was rapidly swelling and near the size of a softball. I thought that there was a broken bone for sure! Ambulance came, hospital, x-rays. Thank God for those chaps! I would have been in much worse shape today without them!

No broken bones and we have no idea what happened. Maybe kids were throwing rocks from the bridge above, maybe a part came off of someone's car. Who knows...Thankfully, I won't be out of work too long...can't wear 8"spikes with my shin sticking out like a big, ugly wart and trobbing like a MF!

Just be careful ladies...be sure to protect your bodies while riding...I have definately learned my lesson!

I had Montel on the TV yesterday while I was packing up my apartment and there was a lady on the show that had a similar situation! Her and her boyfriend were driving along and someone (never found who) dropped a rock off a bridge and it smashed through their car and hit her in the head. She had serious brain damage and lost the use of one eye (i think).

Oh, how awful, Big D. I hope you recover soon. I'll have to buy some chaps for when I get a bike. Glad you shared, since the last woman I saw riding on a motorcycle was wearing SHORTS and a TANK TOP! On the freeway!

Big D when youre rolling down the road at 60 MPH damn near anything that hits you hurts like a mutha. Mrs FBR and I went to a HOG meeting last Sunday. We were heading down a state route...just cruising at about 50-55 and enjoying the late morning warmth. I saw something in my periphial vision for a split second and then SMACK!! right on the forehead. I think it was only a June Bug or something but it left a hell of a welt on my forehead (I had my windshield off as usual). Short of wearing body armor (or those riding suits that crotch rocket riders have a passion for) I dont know how you can totally protect yourself. I only wear chaps when its starts getting cooler and a helmet when it gets really cold (for the ear protection). Guess its just part of the territory.

I HATE that!!! I mean yeah, it looks hot for a minute, but if you've ever been on a motercycle/ dirt bike/ quad....it's just plain STUPID!!! I have a slight scar on my upper arm from where a piece of road shrapnel got kicked up from the car in front of me.

Take care Big D and I hope you get better soon!!!! r: (I liked the little wheelchair guy..... )

Damn D....sorry to hear about that.

Just had a pretty scary experience with one of my riding buddies also. He was stopped getting ready to pull into a gas station. He was waiting for on coming traffic to get by then he would head in. Welp....a kid from the same town as the buddy of mine, HIT my friend, because he wasn't watching what he was doing. It's lucky that he saw him at the last minute and veered away, because if he had not, we would be having a funeral right now.

My message also to bikers: Be careful out there. Keep on eye on the other guy the whole time!

My message to car drivers: Give the bikers a break. Don't ride on their ass 10 ft, don't cut them off, and please be aware when there are bikers around.

Yes - we got married last night. We are off on the bike today to who knows where...
I ride in shorts too, only when we are just running to the grocery or something. They call chaps your second skin. I know why...I am still hobbling today!
Helmets - no...there is no law here in Colorado. I only wear one if it is snowing. I would be really bummed out if I had to wear one...
    Thanks for the posts!

One of the great things about riding 3-wheelers and MX bikes is crashing, and realizing - yes you can crash when you least expect it, and yes - you WILL crash sooner or later.

Full face helmet for me - a couple of times I was REALLY GLAD I was wearing one.

In fact, I might get me one of those Gary Busey helmets they were talking about on Saturday Night Live, ya know - the helmet for the helmet for the helmet!

You'd be even more bummed out if your head got smashed.

I'm sorry about your accident, but I just think it's kind of strange that you're really advocating wearing chaps, but only wear a helmet in the snow. ng:

The chaps won't save you from the potentially deadly injuries that a helmet could. I've seen a few motorcycle accidents where the guy wasn't wearing a helmet and giant bruises on your legs are way better than paramedics scooping your brain off the asphalt...

On a side note...a friend of a friend died last year in her car when someone dropped a giant chunk of ice off a bridge and hit her on the head and killer her in front of her husband and kids. Totally messed up!

I can't advocate wearing a helmet enough. If you drive a car long enough, it's not if you'll have a fender-bender, it's when. If you ride a bike long enough, it's not if you're going to fall, it's when. Road rash is a lot easier to recover from than brain damage.

I was driving down I-25, 70 mph, stuck behind a gravel truck, and a rock about three inches in diameter (best guess) falls from the truck, bounces on the highway, and slams into the forehead of my helmet, rocking my head back. Can you imagine if I hadn't been wearing my helmet? D-e-a-d.

Yeah, it gets hot in a jacket, but I have a mesh job that lets the air in and still has armor inside. I might not wear it in town on very hot days, but when I'm on the highway, it goes on.

I was driving down the highway behind a car, and suddenly there's a 2-by-4 on the road that the car had straddled. I swerved to get around it, but not in time. It flipped up and smashed into my boot. Left my toe purple and blue. Had I not been wearing my boots, I'm sure I would've been trying to shift the bike with a broken foot - not advisable.

There's risks in everything, of course, and you can go to extremes to protect yourself. For me, I think a helmet is reasonably prudent. I've been riding for over 30 years, sometimes pretty aggressively, and had my share of spills - and I've had no broken bones, no trips to the hospital, and still alive. There's really something to be said for wearing a little protection.

I don't like being on motorcycles...I was driving my car one time and a truck kicked up a rock and cracked my windshield. My first thought was, "Damn...wonder what my face would've looked like."

Sorry to hear about the incident with your bike, D...Ouch...that prolly sure DID hurt...how is it feeling now? Did you find out what it was that hit you?

Wow! Thanks guys! Well, have not been in here since I posted that...yep better but I am still unable to work or run which is really a bummer. Maybe that is why I am being a little grouchy. My leg is still swolen about the size of half a golf ball. Went back to the Dr Sunday to see if they could drain it and he referred me to a surgeon. I am seriously rethinking the helmet thing...

The thing is, for me, this has been a serious reality check on how my body or face can't be hurt or I am out of work. Yea, I can go in but I am very limited on what I can do. I don't even know if I can wear that 8"spike! I definately will not be able to crawl around, straddle guys on my knees, etc. I love to ride but now feel a little uncomfortable with it, even after going all the way to Sante Fe. In my last year, I think that I should just be very careful. Us old chicks do not recover as well as you young ones!

BTW - CONGRATS ON YOUR MARRAIGE!!!!!

Another stupid thing I see is people who put their young kids on the bike with them. Years ago, I was in the car with my ma dukes and as we were coming around a sharp curve in the road, Gilly (Who OWNS Gilly's cycle shop in NH) comes whipping up the wrong side of the road and crashes into the driver's quarter panel of our car with his 4 YEAR OLD ON BACK!!!!!!!
Well, to make a long story short, the kid had on a helmet (albeit one that didn't quite fit his noggin) but thank GOD! The kid did a somersault midair and landed on his head. He had a small cut under his eye when the whole thing was over. Gilly on the other hand suffered 2 broken ribs and a broken leg. A godsmack I say. Children have no business on the back of an open vehicle like a bike or ATV.
