    Default proper stretching!

I might be a total dork for starting this thread, but I'm concerned about fellow dancers' safety. I don't know if other clubs are like this, but at mine i almost never see dancers warm up or stretch before they go on stage/on the floor. It drives me totally nuts! If you don't warm your muscles up before doing something intense and aerobic like dancing (and it's pretty intense, even when it's the "slow and sensual" kind of dancing) then you're running a serious risk of tearing a muscle, throwing out a joint, etc.

I'm constantly hearing about people getting injured and not being able to work for weeks. Quite possibly you could hurt yourself badly enough that you won't be working again ever.

Also, in my opinion, a graceful body is sooooo much sexier than any other asset a woman can have. A girl can have beautiful breasts, a great ass, legs forever, but if she's walking around stiff or slumped over you won't even notice it. How can you really move your body in a sex way when your muscles are tight and cold?

    Sorry if I'm preaching...

But bend over and touch your toes, goddammit!

I agree with the stretching part!!! I also reccomend a five minute little warm-up of ANYTHING gentle, like walking, etc. to get the blood flowing and THEN stretch......stretching cold can be just as bad as dancing cold!!!(I haven't done exotic dancing yet, but years of other dancing and exercise)

Although I've done lots of stretching and stuff in the past, is there anything in particular that works really well to get flexibility back/improve flexibility?? How often do you stretch a week, etc?

But I hope everyone is stretching

I never stretch AT the club but rather, stretch a LOT at home before I go to the club. That's after I've done my "routine" as stated in the Q&A thread. I hate spending more then the time it takes me to get dressed in the dressing room. Some girls can just sit in there, and put makeup on for HOURS! I don't get it. Aren't we there to make $$$?! Usually those are the girls I hear bitching at the end of the night that they didn't break a hundred. *whilst I count out neat stacks of 20's* hehe.

    A little off track...

Anyway. STRETCH! I agree. In accordance with something else you said along the lines of "even though it's slow and sensual, you should still stretch..." I actually find it MORE of a workout to be slow and sensual, while still doing crazy acrobat moves. Kinda like pilates. They make you do reps SLOW because it's more effective. So I say: stretch ESPECIALLY because you move slowly.

Devinn, you're totally right, you have to start stretching gradually...abrupt, hard pulling is just as bad as not doing any stretching at all.

Particularly good stretches...legs stretches are great. The good old standby where you sit with your legs in front of you and touch your toes is fine. The trick is to NOT just reach down and grab your feet, but go as far as you comfortably can and then stay there and breathe, and try to go a little further with every breath. This will avoid nasty pulls. And of course, all the hip-opening stretches are important, cause these are the primary muscles you use to shake your ass. A good one is to sit on the floor with the soles of your feet together and your knees sticking out to either side. Bring your heels in as close to your butt as you can comfortably, and then try to bend from the waist and touch your forehead to the floor. Keep your back and neck straight, and don't worry if your head doesn't go down all the way. Go as far as you can every day, and eventually you'll get there.

If your really interested in some good stretches, I recommend a yoga video or class, if you haven't already tried it. Yoga rules!

Uh-oh... I rarely ever stretch. Thanks for reminding me, I really need to get into the habit before I screw myself!

And remember no bouncing! That actually makes the muscle shorter over time rather than more flexible.

Also breathe when you stretch, it's very important to let oxygen get to those muscles. Don't hold your breath, Inhale deep before going into the stretch and exhale as you go into it.

For best results hold the stretch for 15- 20 seconds before you release and don't over do it or you'll pull something.

Easy does it everyday and before you know it you'll be a Gumby

The s factor by sheila kelly has some great tips for streching and pole dancing.
I highly reccomend it to everyone.

I totally agree about stretching..and I am regretting that I didn't for the last 2 days. This morning I could not even get out of bed and every muscle is STIFF like never before..I definately won't push my body or do floor work without stretching again.. My muscles hurt so bad my body feels sick. I have a pilates plus tape which has yoga on it..but I won't be doing that today..lol..Damn!!

There isn't room in my club's dressing room for stretching...way too packed. My only option is to stretch before I leave the house, which is 30 minutes from work.
I am one of those people who has seriously pulled something (in my calves) and I missed work for a whole week. Now I do a Pilates DVD before work. It doesn't count as my workout, just stretching out before work. Making that change has really helped combat injuries and soreness, plus I feel more graceful at work.

I hope I'll be able to stretch before work at my new club, this one never has any customers the first hour or two after opening, so I usually spend 10-20 minutes doing a ballet barre exercise and a few pole tricks.

I only recently started stretching / warming up before work. I figured that it's probably only a matter of time otherwise before I seriously hurt myself! If theres no space backstage I go to the ladies or the corridor outside and stretch or start my first podium with stretches if theres only a few people in the club. Felt abit stupid at first but I got over it!
