Default IMPORTANT BEN & JERRY"S ICE CREAM/ Converse Sneakers

Ben and Jerry's was sold to Unilever. But, the brand is retaining the "Granola" image. HOWEVER, I met two former employees that were fired after the takeover. At Ben and Jerry's, they made ten bucks an hour, full time plus overtime with benefits. Not bad for Vermont. Now they have to travel for work. I'm dying to know where the employee-rights rider went during the sale of the company. Maybe....out the window?
Plus, it's really fatty ice cream anyway.

I am informed that Converse was sold, maybe to Nike. Seeing as those crazy WTO protesting ecoterrorists will kick your ass if you're wearing the Swoosh, this info goes along with the Ben and Jerry's thing.

If you're bummed out by this thread, I suggest you adopt a cat or dog, and buy more organic produce. Smoke some weed and listen to Dave Matthews. Better now?

Yep, this reminds me of the Fannie May candy co. Co. sold, lots of (longtime employees screwed over, etc). Btw, love B&J Cherry Garcia. I do try to buy organic, & shop @ Whole Foods. Their meats are hormone, additive free, animals are humanely butchered. I can't have dog, (luv 'em tho). Have a bun(ny). She doesn't care for cats. I likee. Didn't adopt her, b/c adoption place stole my last baby bun. Don't smoke anything anymore.

The company I work for is in the process of being bought out right now. Supposedly a "merger," but we all know it's a buyout.

I might not have the right amount here, but our CEO, for stepping down, will receive at least slightly less than 100 million.
I'm not sure anyone is worth that amount, but I've only been here a few years, and this guy did prevent the company from going bankrupt. In that case, nobody would be working here now anyway.

I know I'll be okay, no matter what, even if I must go to some other company. The ones I feel sorry for are the married couples where the husband and wife both work here! And we have quite a few people in that situation, many with one or more children.

Some easy suggestions to "fight the power": shop at Unionized stores. Buy your produce at Farmer's Market. Buy generic store brands when possible. Make your home energy efficient to give less of your income to utilities. Trim your living expenses, and save up to invest in a company you support %100. Write you local congressman/woman, and get involved in local politics. Re: transportation- buy a bike, take the train or bus more often.
My favorite new cause is eating only at mom-and-pop resturants- I got informed of the threat franchise resturants are to privately run operations. And, the food tastes way better!

There's a movement here in Austin called "Keep Austin Weird" which supports the local stores and restaurants rather than the super stores (up the road on 35.)

I try to buy from the locals where ever I lived. Farmer's market is a good idea though, never thought about it. I suspect the lettace from Randalls and the like is from Mexico, but I don't know that for sure.

Hmmmm...I'll follow what I can of your advice Madmaxine. I already buy organic produce when possible. As to weed, my doc has me on enough Rx junk already, including Paxil, without me adding more. As to music, one of my younger co-workers recommended "bond," whom I'd never heard of - did purchase one of their CDs, & have been "wearing out" the "caliente remix" track of "Fuego" ever since! Always been easier for me to repeatedly listen to instrumental music vs. songs with lyrics.

Re: "mom-and-pop" restaurants, this is why I try to avoid going to Starbucks. I have spent approximately $12.00 at three different ones in my lifetime, but don't approve of one stunt I've actually seen them pull in the next city over from the one where I live. They'll place a second Starbucks very close to an existing one if another coffehouse should open nearby. This, even though it takes sales from the first Starbucks. But the effort is made to drive the small coffeehouse out of business before it even has a chance to gain a clientele. Fortulnately, in the case I know about, the woman who started the small coffehouse had many customers who were her personal friends, so her little business survived!

Question to Deogol: Is there a link anywhere with instrulctions on how other cities might emulate the program to help small businesses in Austin? Austin is a very much a college town, though, so I'm not sure what works well there will work well elsewhere. Thanks!
