Default sleeping in the daytime

I am a very light sleeper.Any tips on how you girls do the sleep thing during the day?Anything to make it easier?! I feel like an addict having to take a benadryl once in awhile to get back to sleep.Earplugs stick out too far and when I sleep on my sides they are annoying because they rub on the pillow. I put something over my eyes so that helps. Maybe hanging upside-down from the rafters and drinking blood helps? thanks!

Keep the room as dark as possible.
And light some nag champa or rose scented inscence.
Drink some calming tea like valerian root or cammomile tea sp?.
Just the act of sipping something warm will calm you down and make you a bit sleepy.Eye guards help too.

I personally am a total insomniac. I can't sleep at night . My sleep schedule is totaly out of wack. It has become worse since I began dancing.
My doctor had me on ambien(which is very addictive and makes you feel drunk) and now he is switching me over to klonopin as of mon.
I don't think I will ever really sleep normally.
A few weeks ago I made the mistake of staying up all night and sleeping the whole next day. This pattern continued untill I forced myself to stay up untill 9 pm which is now the time I keep falling asleep at.
I am supposed to head off to work im sleeping in bed!
To make matters worse I keep waking up really early like 6am.(I normally go to bed around 3/4 and wake up at 12/1 pm)
It's terrible. Tonight I am going to try to stay up as late as possible becouse i have missed ALOT of work and have to go in tommorow.
Sorry to rant on your post but I was actually about to start an insomniac post myself.
Anyway good luck to you and I hope you get the rest you need.
If your desperate you could always take a few tylonol pm's or a unisom. But these can leave you feeling very groggy so have coffee on hand when you wake up.
Good luck

I agree make your room as dark as possible get thicker curtains or cover up the windows someway. Make sure you u have a nice clean fresh room with a/c. Lay down and watch t.v. for a while eventually you will feel tired and go to sleep. well this works for me. If I don't make myself lay down ill never sleep.

I agree with the ladies, and also know from personal experience as well that if you need to kinda "train" your body to get to sleep when you want, have NO television, computer, radio or reading in your room.

Use your bedroom for sex and sleep only!

Good luck,

I agree. I have read that keeping your room cold helps you fall asleep faster.(Plus then you can get all warm and comfy under your covers)
If you don't have an air-conditoner get a fan. I have mine on 24/7.
Another thing that will help.Read. Flip through a magazine or pick up a good book this will help relax you. Plus if your a worrier like me it will give you something other than your problems to think about.

Its just as important to have proper "lighting" when you wake up in the evening. Trying to keep your body clock in sync with light and dark is the goal.

I started developing sleep problems when I went from working "normal" hours to doing shift work (i.e. early early mornings and late nights) at the gym. I think with something like sleep that once your original conditions / schedule get broken it can be very hard to form a new pattern.

Since I moved from relatively quiet Adelaide and Melbourne to Hong Kong I can say that I have a diagnosed sleep problem. I cycle between melatonin. some cold and flu meds and stuff teh doctors give me occassionally. Every now and again I go cold turkey and try to sleep "normally".

The only thing I can say that has definitely worked for me is the cutting back of caffeine after midday. I no longer have coffee /caffiene after 12pm (it was tricky at first when I had shows late at night) but I got through. Sleep much better now.

I also think that a dark room is important, but trying to drown Hong Kong noise out is impossible. On the brighter side, have read some metaphysical literature that says we sleep too much and need to wean ourselves out of it. Still, going down that track too far can lead to worse problems I think.

I don't think it is a case of we sleep too much.. supposedly 5 hours of really good quality sleep is better than 8 hours of mediocre quality sleep.

I usually only need 5 hours sleep... and 15mins to hour "beauty sleep" prior to work. I'm one of the few lucky people who have no sleeping problems... main reason why I stop smoking pot (all it did was send me asleep.. no craving of anything.. just really sleepy and I don't need help in that area).

Granted, I have found that chamolie tea (just the scent of it) or anything else "calming" scent-wise does help. Calming music if you need to drown out any noise or to have your mind concentrate on something.

I agree with Pamela. Try to not read or do anything except sex or sleep in/on your bed... this will help your brain associate you "climbing into bed" with one or both (if you're lucky lol!) these activities

Even try to work out or do yoga before you go to bed. Do not do any mediative exercises prior to bed ... they are more designed for when you wake up (to help refresh the mind).

PS I also personally feel quality sleep only happens when you're "looking after yourself" with proper nutrition followed by exercise.

Keep the room as dark as possible.
This is a big part of it. Your skin and eyes respond to the light in the formation of your circadian rhythm, which takes time to set.

Having worked night shifts in the days of my youth, darkening the room as much as possible and chilling the temperature was immensely helpful.

No stimulants or depressants of any kind; they just make it tougher for your body to adjust to the new rhythm and interfere with your ability to achieve REM cycling.

And what Pamela said about reserving the bed for sex and sleeping. Twice. (by the way, Pamela--your mailbox is full!)

Two cents.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

If I have problems sleeping,(before my Dr. gave me trazadone to sleep) I always cranked up the heat, read a book and drank hot chocolate. I guess it was just something about the heat of the drink and all the old comforting memories from childhood that did it.

I agree though, you need a very dark room. I painted my bedroom windows on the inside with acrylic "toll" paint. You can get a huge bottle from Wal-Mart for around $2, and if you are renting you can just wash the stuff off when you move out. Get darker curtains too and try a sleeping mask, sometimes they work.

Also if you need ear plugs for the sound, try Play-doh. I know it sounds corny, but if you mold it for your ears when it's still soft then it will form fit and you have no problems about it sticking out too much. My mom used to do that when she lived by a train track.

Try melatonin (quick release). It mimicks the chemicals that are released at night(in the dark) in your body.

I use aromatherapy and also have sounds of night playing in my room (with the combo of having the room really dark). If I do not have the "night sounds" playing my body just does not go to sleep. I have found that that works the best. If that doesn't work, you could always get a really logical book...one that you have to use a lot of brain power to read/understand. It'll tire your mind enough to help you fall asleep.

I drink some fijian kava sometimes which helps me relax and calm down. Other times a really hot shower before going to sleep and making sure the bedroom is some what cool like 72 degrees or so and very dark. I don't watch tv or read or have sex before going to bed, all those activites seem to keep me up. I have done my rounds of prescribed meds and I don't like the groggy hang over feeling I get from taking them.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.
