    Default pole grip question

As i slowly prepare myself to get back into stripping, several things have crossed my mind that i never questioned before. The last club that i worked, in pole work was really never encouraged, so it wasn't somthing i used for more then just a prop really. I don't know if there is a standard size and circumference, but i remember the circumference of the poles at the club being large for my hands. has anyone else come across this problem? And do you need a lotof upper body strength for pole work?

Yes they do vary in size. I'm not sure how big a pole youre talking about. and as far as upper body strenght. yes you do need it. i remember being amazed how weak i was when i first started trying things on the pole. good news is there are some other things you can do on it that dont involve lift/supporting all your weight. man, this will be hard to get accross in writing/and probably harder to read it and picture it..i'll try.
1)make sure have a hold of the pole, lift your right leg and thrust it around counterclockwise, and then about 2/3 way around the pole replace leg on the floor again, just as you do that lift your other leg up and come full circle of the pole. Sounds weird, but it's a very easy, graceful simple move once you have it down. no need for upper body strenght as you have one leg on the floor at all times. this does not work well in boots as they grab the floor more and dont allow your shoe to swivel and turn with you.
2.)I like to grab the pole above my head with my back facing the pole, bring your legs just a bit upward and slide down to the ground, this will get you on the floor gracefully for a nice floor show.
just a couple of newbie things you might try..hope it helps.

There is a trick I do which involves flipping upside down, and I have found that it can be done on anything from an inch and a half thick canopy pole to a street sign to a concrete pillar about ten inches thick, though the latter is pretty tough. The best pole dancer I have ever seen, Fawn (who not surprisingly I called the "Queen of the Pole"), has also done some amazing things on all diameters.

Leverage is far more important than upper body strength, though the latter can help a lot. Stomach and back strength are also helpful. A lot depends on which tricks you are doing.

Pole dancing is vastly overrated as a means of increasing income. It will get their attention, to be sure, and as a DJ I always talk up a talented pole dancer--but some of the sexiest and most profitable dancers I have ever seen never touched it. I have also seen some extremely impressive pole tricks which nonetheless didn't really look sexy. And some very easy tricks--done with a certain style--which emphatically did.

I have found that with new girls who are having trouble loosening up and/or dancing well, teaching them some tricks can be very helpful in increasing their confidence--and getting them in the right mindset to dance better.

The trick I always teach the newbies is pretty simple, and I think fairly similar to what Dyeemblonde describes above. You grip the pole at shoulder height with your right hand, lean out away from the pole so your arm is stretched out, and hook your right leg as high as you can on the pole with the crook of your knee--so your calf and foot are pointing behind you.. Then all you have to do is basically fall forward and you will wind up spinning around the pole. With a little practice this can be made to look graceful and impressive, though it really is very simple.

The bottom line is, if it makes you feel better and sexier--do it, it's not so hard with a little practice.

Thank you both. i remember when i first started dancing that i couldn get a good hold, i have small hands. so leverage was a problem. But i want the option now to do somthing on the pole if i wanted to. thank you for the suggestions.

Are the practice poles(platinum stages...ect.) helpful to learn on? Will I be suprised that a club pole is much harder and find my self not able to do the same things I learned on the portable? And what is the best practice pole to purchase as well regardless? Thanks

Recently at my club, they have switched poles from a skinny still pole to a larger rotating one. I am very busy on the pole and so far there is only one trick I can't do that I used to do. I can't do the trick because I can't get my hand all the way around. Each time I enter the stage I wipe the pole with a dry cloth or a cloth with a little bit of alcohol on it. This helps to strip away any body oils, lotion etc....

thats right, i completely forgot about rotating poles. I think these might make some things easier and other things harder, but I'm speaking from little pole experience

I prefer the rotating poles...... your tricks look cooler than they really are and look more graceful.
