ALICE NO LONGER FEELS LOWER THAN A SNAKE'S BELLY

Alice, the albino python that undulates onstage with rock star Alice Cooper, is lucky to be alive.

It took Higganum veterinarian Richard Jacobs two hours this week to carefully slice open Alice to remove a 12-by-14-inch heating pad, wires and all, from the 8-foot snake's tummy. Hours before taking the stage at the careerbuilder.com Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford Saturday night with the eccentric Cooper, Alice dined on a live rat, then swallowed the heating pad mistakenly placed in her cage.

Cooper's roadies noticed Alice's massive bulge and called Alison Sloan, who helps at-risk snakes.

``It was absolutely an emergency,'' said Sloan Thursday, noting the wires could have ruptured Alice's intestines or other organs with fatal results. ``She's a very lucky snake.''

Sloan, the director-owner of Ashleigh's Rain Forest in Essex, directed Alice to Jacobs. She also lent Cooper a yellow anaconda for the Oakdale gig.

On Thursday, Alice, a svelte 13 pounds without the stomach obstruction, was recuperating comfortably, still digesting the rat, at Jacobs' office. Pampered by the vet and his staff, Alice returned the affection with several tongue flutters.

Just two days earlier, Jacobs and his crew had knocked the patient out and inserted a tube to aid Alice's breathing during the surgery. Jacobs said he sliced open Alice's belly five inches along a row of scales and maneuvered the heating pad out.

``That's an outrageous X-ray,'' Jacobs said Thursday, looking at the pre-op picture of the snake that showed the wires and contacts from the heating pad -- plus a rodent. ``It's probably the most astonishing X-ray I've taken in my career.''

Cooper, who could not be reached for comment, thanked Sloan for her help and paid the $1,000 surgery bill. He is also allowing Alice to semi-retire to Sloan's rescue and rehab.

``Alice Cooper stepped up to pay the vet bill and let Alice live in our rain forest,'' Sloan said.

Sloan said Cooper might call on Alice to make stage appearances during future performances in the Northeast.

Wow. It seems weird though that the snake is 8 feet, 13 lbs (?), and only eats rats. My snakes are only about 4-5 feet and eat the biggest rats you can buy. I'm glad the snake is ok though. It wasn't his fault he ate the wrong thing!

    O. Thought you might talkin' the one-eyed trouser variety. Glad he's ok.
Btw, this reminds of another snake sStory: A guy's pet boa, sank its fangs in his stomach. Parmedics were called, he refused to let them kill it, so they put smelling salts to it, he relaxed & let loose.

Hey i saw Alice Cooper in concert way back! He had and may still have a Boa named Sherrie (sp)

Anyway, what happens to snakes, mainly constrictors that alot of people dont understand is that a rat, or rabbit etc. will alot of times grip or even grab hold of anything in the cage while being on "the food list."

I have a HUGE Burmese python who once ate a friends (years ago) smaller python, because they both grabbed hold of the food, my snake took his right down alive, we thought the friends snake got lose, but later found my snake with his head extended in the air with an open mouth (common after a feeding, but not this long) upon looking farther we saw the other snakes tail still going down! That's alot of food for a then 5 foot Burmese. We let him do his thing, and he was fine, layed to digest a heavy meal for many days.

This is not uncommon for a snake to take it's heating pad inside the cage upon feeding, anything food latches on to will go down as well if the food animal does not let go.

Never keep chips, dirt or sawdust in the cage for bedding, they will also get this in small quantities while eating and can cause a tear which leads to mouth rot, a common infection that can kill.

Been through it all with the snake bit, as i have had them all my life, my mother bought my first one at age 10 she says. A black racer yet....jee.

PS a snake just does not eat "non food list items." Whirl. hun boas don't have fangs, but lots of teeth that are curved back, to release a bite get to a faucet and pour alcohol on the mouth, this wont kill the snake but will be foul tasting, and cause the snake or a person to pull back which may cause the snake to lose some teeth in the skin, and BURN like hell....been there too. Their teeth grow back...Lol.

    Right on, Pamela!

And, if you do keep wood chips, or any other approved bedding (no pine-deadly) in your snakes cage, make sure you feed them outside of the cage. For exactly the reasons Pamela said.

Yeppers, it's good to see I'm not the only one who thinks that snakes are good pets.

It's also a good rule of thumb that you always have some form of alcohol close by in case snakie poo gets frisky. Also another "rule" is to never have a snake that is larger around thaa your upper arm. that way in cause the snake gets wrapped around your neck you will have a better chance of removing the snake without harm to either of you.

I miss my snake, but hubby won't let me have another one till the kiddo get a little bigger.
