they can in certain situations.. there's also something called reaffirmation of a debt meaning that you go to a hearing after you're bankruptcy and tell the judge why you don't want this debt erased with your others. in that case you just continue making those payments and all the others are gone.
if you're seriously thinking about it look for a bankruptcy lawyer in your area advertising a free consultation & make a list of questions and concerns before you go in... i went to like 3 and then went to a cheap bargain guy when i was finally ready and full of the right info.
If you are dancing, then you can make plenty of money and don't need to declare bankruptcy.
I'm sorry if this offends, but I think that's f-ed up. You racked up your bills and then go, "oh, I think I'd rather not pay them." I hope you had fun on your vacations that you didn't have to pay for and had fun watching your TV that you didn't have to pay for. And how were those dinners out on the town...that you didn't have to pay for
And you know who pays for them? People that are doing the right thing and paying off their debt. Interest rates are up across the board to accomodate for the deadbeat spenders.
I guess I shouldn't get all bent out of shape because lenders will make you bankruptcy people pay twice as I do for everything you buy on credit because they know you lack financial responsibility.

amen.
ALSO, have fun not being able to own your own home for another 7 plus years. Bankrupcy gets held against you and whatever purchases you would like OR NEED in the future.
what arrogance some people have to post that!
I disagree. It's very fun. Like finally not procrastinating that paper and writing it as soon as you get the assignment. Or like swimming from the bottom of a very deep lake only to be able to breathe again. (or is that too metaphorical?) Anyway, nothing beats knowing that you're responsible and making a better life for yourself.Originally Posted by Emily link=board=27;threadid=12292;start=msg158979#msg15 8979 date=1092900581
And not getting letters every week and phone calls everyday from bill collecters is nice, too.
ummm, stop spending? You do not need Prada.
I find that more liberating or therapeutic than "fun".Originally Posted by voodoo link=board=27;threadid=12292;start=msg159336#msg15 9336 date=1092938475
You know what's fun? SPENDING it! That's what I was trying to illustrate. Paying off debt or saving money is not fun because you must delay gratification.
Although, I do cconsider shopping so much more fun now because it's like I get everythingo n sale since I'm not paying interest on it. Love a sale....

actually, the majority of my debt is from when i was in college. i'm 25 & have a marketing degree... i'm dancing now in order to save up & start my own business (hopefully before next may ) while in college i lived in england and studied international business for a year. that's where part of my debt ran up because no, i did not work. more of my debt came from the summer i spent studying sociocultural developement of third world countries in thialand, india, and nepal as well as a trek through the himalayan mountains. the rest involved some bad decisions (helping a 'friend' pay her mortgage 2 months in a row by taking a loan against the car that I paid for) and naturally some shopping.
i totally see how your first thought would be some spoiled brat running around buying louis vuitton & christian dior and then taking the easy way out, but just so you know i am and have always been a hard worker & although i now have that nitch on my record i will be very successful very soon and don't regret a thing.
ps i was not dancing when i decided on bancruptcy, i was in management making about $3000/month... so there ya go
See, when I'm in debt I don't think spending money on anything else is "fun" because I get guilt issues and end up regretting the purchase. But yeah, I see your point.Originally Posted by Emily link=board=27;threadid=12292;start=msg159511#msg15 9511 date=1092953766

I'm not materialistic. I was brought up poor(obviously, lol) & I have no problem living without unnecessary things. Not that I want ppl to pity me, but when I was younger I had to pay everything on my own. I didn't have my parents help me out with school payments, it was all on my own. I had to stop going to college bc I couldn't pay it & I needed to work full time to pay it off. I had to pay my car that got me where I needed to go, my clothes, school supplies, ect. It was so impossible to work full time & go to school at the same time. School & other necessary expenses left me in debt, not some ugly designer bag.Originally Posted by scorpio link=board=27;threadid=12292;start=msg159383#msg15 9383 date=1092941108
For Christ sakes I wish I can spoil myself.![]()
Hey Vyanka I hope you can get your finantial situation improved. My mom is also in debt and it really sucks and its a burden. To me you sound like you didn't get in debt by spending irresponably on clothes. I know school is very expensive and if you just don't have any money and then you have to pay for school you get some debt.
I agree with what people said about declaring bankrupcy- that's not fair to people who are financtially responsible. I heard about some people who declared bankruptcy and they got to keep their house and belongings and I better not be giving anyone any ideas. What they did made me mad.
I started a thread in the Dollar Den Section called saving/bugeting with some of my money saving ideas and maybe people could help me think of other ways to reduce spending. I think saving/budgeting could help anyone in the long run.
