    Default Pyrotechnics

Does anyone know where I can find info on doing a stage show with fire? Or any other ideas for a mini-feature set that would be fun but not too messy or complicated to set up or clean up. Also, I've seen those giant plastic champagne glasses for bathing on stage in, any info on where to get one of those?

Try contacting www.continentalagency.com and ask where their features get supplies or try e-mailing Jada Deville who was our last feature at our club and ask her. She had the champagne glass and did fire tricks. I'm not sure what her e-mail is but I am sure it is on her web site... www.jadadeville.com I know she has a guest book on the site and you could ask her about it...

as far as pyrotechnics, i breathe fire. many clubs will have a problem with this (check out the club fire in rhode island that happened from pyrotechnics used by the band white wave) after white wave, many clubs don't allow fire breathing. it has to do with state laws, the club's size, their insurance, liability (should something go wrong), proper ventilation, etc. i'm sure some clubs may allow it, but you'd have to check with them first.

For a while I was considering fire for my act too - I found this site http://www.firepixie.com/fire/index.html
and it gave me some ideas. I had a costume to go with the fire (it was a leather spiked jock that I was to set on fire whilst wearing it! :o ) and consulted a fire specialist here in HK.

I was already to start and waiting only to come over to the US to go to Hollywood Magic to pick up some special supplies; got there, and they no longer sold anything to do with using fire. It kinda let the wind out of my sails so I quit the idea. I had taken into account stories like those mentioned above and decided it was too much hassle. I have compensated by incorporating otehr stuff into my acts instead.

After last summer's tragic RI concert fire, clubs of all kinds have had their insurance companies reading them the 'riot act' in regards to high risk performances - with fire stunts being on the top of the list.

Yup - if the club soesnt have a special provision for it in their insurance and something goes wrong you are screwed.

Its a huge risk that even skilled entertainers should reconsidor.

My girlfriend is currently going thru a lawsuit (personal injury) and the club is fighting her tooth n nail on it meanwhile she was in the burn unit for 2 months over an error on behalf of a drunk dj.

She may or may not ever get recompense and in the meantime is scarred for life --------- NOT her fault!

Here in Canada you have to have pre approval from the fire dept to perform even the mildest display of fire ( just a pot with flame and no interaction) and many clubs still say thats not enough where's your pyrotechnics license? Etc etc. And even if you have the license the club may not have insurance provisions, in fact none will, its a risk a liability both personal safety wise and legally.

The glass bathtub is expensive, cumbersome and many features may not want to reveal their source - hey you are stealing their thunder after all! If any showgirl can and does the same performance as a feature it threatens her livlihood in some way.

Try some more subtle props, flourescent paint, body paint or have customers body paint you....some girls use baby blow up pools...tons of sponges and bubbles, some girls use magic, or light effects or while you are in your baby pool turn on an overhead bubble machine (you can buy these at almost any stage supplier along with fog machines and strobers etc) its not very expensive and the effect is awesome.

Avoid the fire, just my 2 cents!

    Cheers!

I've actually taught several dancers how to eat fire and built acts for them. In fact, I'm going to be teaching a dancer here in Vegas the art in a few weeks. It's a lot easier than you might think, and yet there are a lot of dangers involved so without the proper training, something simple can be something deadly. There is a lot to learn about how the mechanics too such as the different types of fuels, how to build reliable and long lasting torches, etc.

The most important thing to know though Leigh touched upon and that is a license to perform from your local fire district. Typically it is called a Fire Marshall's License for use with pyrotechnics. There are different kinds of licensing for pyrotechnic use but a basic license should suffice. Generally speaking, a license must be had by the performer and sometimes an employee of the club as well. Sometimes a license by the club is fine but you'll have to ask your local fire department for the legalities. To get the license requires taking a class once or twice a week for a few weeks.

Although I've met a some dancers who are performing in a club without a license or without the club having an employee with one, it's a bad idea. The training for the license will give you lots of important safety training and without the license, the performer and/or the club is subject to very large fines. Think of it from the fire department's perspective...someone is performing a fire routine in a public place where nobody has undergone any formal safety training...BAD MOVE. As a result, they are really strict about coming down hard on people in these situations so get the training. You might just want to talk to your club about having them pay for it or probably even have a manager of the club take the class with you which is the situation I'm waiting for at the momement before I train the dancer I mentioned earlier on fire eating. The club is paying for a manager to get the license for the club. This way, any dancers using pyrotechnics are covered. One last thing about the licensing...without having someone legal in your club, should someone (including yourself) be injured or property damaged by the fire (I knew a dancer once who did this on stage and she waived her torches in the air and melted the gels in some of the lights above her) insurance probably will not cover anything, and if the insurance company were to find out that the performance is being done unlicensed, they can pull their insurance policy from the club.
