Default Don't you freakin love it...

When you take your 15 month old daughter to the ER because she has a fever of 103.5, and 8 hours later, when we finally sign her out AMA, her temp is 104?

After Chest X-Rays, A Urine Sample (BY CATHETHER!), Blood tests, and having a freakin IV needle (with no fluids) for about 6 hours, They know NOTHING! They don't know what's wrong, they're completely clueless as to where the fever is coming from. Freakin Morons!

So, my patience pretty much ended when they went to take her temp before we left, and found that the fever had not reduced, but INCREASED. I went and hunted down the doctor, with my daughter in my arms and told him where to shove his medical training, because it obviously did him no good.

He proceeded to tell me that a fever of 104 in an infant is really no cause for concern. BULL EFFIN SHIT. It's funny how young kids go into convulsions at 105 and above.

So we exchanged words, I made him get a nurse to take the freakin IV needle out of my daughter's hand, and me and the hubby took her home.

Kent Hospital is full of morons who probably earned their medical degrees through correspondence schools. We're freakin done with them. From now on, it's Hasbro all the way. WELL worth the drive to Providence.

Sorry, had to rant.. Feel free to calm me down anytime now.

Oh, well.. We have her home with us. We signed her out AMA, and if we have any problems throughout the night, we're going to Hasbro.. F*ck Kent Hospital.

Surprisingly enough.. Popsicles and water has brought the temp down to 101, which is about normal for her age.

Strange how they didn't think of that. Morons.

So yeah, I'm cranky about that. But factor in that I haven't been to bed since I woke up at 4:30 pm on Friday. So, I'm working on 30+ hours. Ugh

    Rhi,

I certainly hope your daughter will be feeling better soon. I have experienced first-hand the stupidity of ER staff.... I avoid it as much as possible. They just don't Give a Shit!

Thanks girls.. They're just lucky that my hubby got us out of there when he did. No telling what I would have done.

What pissed me off even more is that while we were sitting there for 8 hours. They saw numerous kids. One with a scraped knee, one with the sniffles, and one that fell off her bike and got road rash all over her face. Woop de freakin do! They should most certainly have priority over a 15 month old with a dangerous fever, right? Grrrr!

When my girls were infants they both ran fevers of 102-103, there is a sickness that kids get where a high fever is the only sign, our pediatrician told me what it was and what to do about it over the phone, no hospital visit!
I guess what I'm trying to say is the hospital you went to sucks!!
I would've done exactly what you did!

I was going to say it is better to have a pediatrician. They are more up to date with what is happening in the child population, a child's physiology, etc. Kids are not little adults.

ER wards are just not trained to deal with infants. They are about broken bones, puncture injuries, cardiac problems and a whole slew of things like that. Certainly staffed by people who are qualified, but things like this is where experience differentiates.

I hope your baby does a lot better!

    Thanks Everyone.

Today, her temp's back up. So we're just going to continue with the Motrin/Tylenol alternating every 6 hours.

Her pediatrician called first thing this morning and said that the fever should go away as soon as the antibiotics kick in. Before we left the hospital, they gave her a double-shot of antibiotics (1 in each leg.. Grrr), per the pediatrician's orders.

If the fever doesn't break by tomorrow, the doctor will see us right away. But, if we get some warning signs (Like dry diapers, and crying with no tears, etc), she said to bring her right to Hasbro, and she'll meet us there. She also doesn't blame us for screaming at Kent.

Her pediatrician actually suggested Gatorade over Pedialyte. So, we've been giving her that, Popsicles, and Water. She's eating a little better today than she did yesterday, so I'm a little less stressed out than I was. But, fevers are still scary stuff.

    Awwww Rhia that sucks!

It's the same situation over here. The highest majority of clinics, hospitals and ER's are run by a bunch of clueless monkeys. Surgeons are butchers. And they are all crooked with billing in order to screw over the ins company and the patient. It's enough to drive you crazy! And boy, do I have enough horror stories to prove all this.

I hope your baby is feeling better soon. An ER releasing an infant with a 104 fever is malpractice, in my opinion. That's absolutely disgusting.

I hear ya, PC, and thanks.

These are the same idiots that when I went in for knee-pain at 11 years old, diagnosed me with "Growing Pains". Turns out, a specialist looked at the X-Rays about a week later, and we get a call. I needed surgery for a tumor. It was benign, but still a tumor. Hardly just growing pains. Ugh.

I'd really like to know where these idiots got their medical training from.

Deogol.. I had spoken to my pediatrician prior to rushing her to the ER. She suggested that was best, because we didn't know what could have caused it. Even after the visit, we still don't know. Ugh.

My neighbor recently joked about having a brain tumor because she had headaches. One week later she discovers she has a tumor on her pituitory gland. Surgery is on Wednesday.

Now a days Dr's are a fuckin joke! What a quack I know first had thats bullshit! I know a little girl who will be in a wheelchair the rest of her life cause her fever was 105........! A high fever like that can do serious damage. Im glad you made the quack aware of his foul up.

Have you tried childrens motrin or advil I use either one when my kids are w/ high fevers. Personally I think it kicks in faster. And they have those cold compresses that sick to your child forehead to keep them cool as well.

    Hope she gets well soon

Good luck Rhi...wish this sh&* wasnt happening to you.

Only thing I use for fevers is bedrest..and cold compresses. For pain, try a hot tottie (whiskey and molasses, put it over the stove's pilot light and spoonfeed to her

That sucks, that's why i'll never take my kid to a medical doctor for an illness.

They say the healthiest people are the ones who stay the farthest from a hospital/doctor's office....

What the hell is he prescribing antibiotics for anyway???
I don't know if you keep up with children's health issues - but administering antibiotics can literally mess up a child for the rest of their lives. The ANTIbiotics kill off all of the vital probiotics and beneficial bacteria in the childs intestine, taking literally years or decades to repopulate. These alterations can cause everything from depression and mood disorders to a weakened immune system. Antibiotics should be administered with EXTREME caution in children - today doctors give them out like candy....

    This shit pisses me off.

Thank you for the tip on the compresses, Caligurl. I'll definitely be picking some of those up. It'll be a whole lot easier than trying to keep the washcloths cold.

Ryan, she was given an antibiotic through orders from my pediatrician. Any medicine that was administered came down from her. I trust her judgment. She's also the pediatrician of my two oldest, and is excellent. She explained to me that it was being given to her so that it would kill any bacteria and anything viral that's trying to manifest in her within the next 24-48 hours.

I'm somewhat like you in that department. I don't like medicating children, because of the risk factors. But, it was definitely worth taking a chance with this. Bacteria can be deadly to a child, especially one as young as Delia.

I allowed it only because I trust her pediatrician with her life. She would never do anything to a child that she wouldn't do to her own. She has 4.

Good luck Rhi. At the hospital i work if we have say alot of major traumas (whats not, right) they will come out to the waiting area, take the temp. and administer a few drops of fever reducer after the paper work, which goes pretty damn fast for a child.

You have every right to be anxious, but a little relief...a small child can run up to 104 with no harm done. Still it does suck for us parents. Adults can't we fry our brains quicker. Children are great for running high fevers and still hanging in there. You by all means did the right thing, i probably would have left against medical advice too.

As for the antibiotics, well said Rhi, this is a precaution to say a bacterial infection which will put a child in ICU. Like meningitis for example until all tests are done.

    Good luck hun.

    Pamela
