    Default Abnormal Cells.....Gulp!

I know I don't know many persons on this board yet, but I had a few questions concerning abnormal cells from a yearly examanation.

I received notification from my ob/gyn that the cells from my last pap (two wks ago) was throwing red flags and I had to come back in immediately for a biopsy/colposcopy. Has anyone unforturnately ever had this proceedure? What do they do and what is it like?

Im a bit worried....I have two little girls and even though I don't know if it's cancer or what is going on it really gets you thinking....................

Thanks ahead of time for your input.....

I had an abnormal pap at the age of 19, followed by the colposcopy (sp?) and a cone biopsy. I was diagnosed with dysplasia (yes it's cancer, but easily treatable). They used cryosurgery, basically using nitrous oxide (i think) to freeze and kill the offending cells. After that I had to have paps every 3 months for the first year, then every six for the next year, and then back to once a year. I had a healthy baby girl 2 years later.

    Rusty,
This is not something to take lightly but not something to panic over. Abnormal cells are fairly normal in "occurance", just not in "intensity of occurance". That is why a followup investigation is indicated.

Narrow the facts before you react, but by no means slough it off. "Pre-" means "before"...a damn good reason to stay on top of it and watch it but not a reason to panic. Relax a bit but do not, under any circumstances, delay for fear of bad news.

    Good luck.

PS I just recently heard from a urologist that an examination of accident victims found pre-cancerous conditions in a majority of accident victims for prostate cancer, even those as young as 25.

last october I had my first pap, and then a call. I had to go in and she told me that I had HPV and cervical dysplasia. the colp only confirmed dysplasia leval one. which is technicly pre cancer. cervical cancer is one of the slowest, if everyone with a cervix that had every had sex had a pap at LEAST once every other year, noone would ever die from it. so its not that bad, although kinda scary at first. I dont have any of the HPV symptoms so I dont notice it at all....

I declined the cryosurgery (which btw ara is useually liquid nitrogen, not nitrous oxide which is laughing gas), they put a frozen rod to the places with the abnormal cells and freeze them. then you will have funny discharge and cant have sex for a month. if you are dancing you also prolly wont be able to work. I belive my body can take care of itsself if I take care of it. that is why I refused the freezing.

You asked what they do durning the colp. well I had my husband drive me because I wasnt sure if they would give me any drugs. they had already given me 800mg ibprofen (sp?) but I didnt take any before, and ended up not taking any at all. I just went into a room that looked just like the room I had my pap in. lay down on the table just like a pap, stirups and everything (I hate those stupid stirups). basicly it starts off just like a pap. but then there is this camera attached to the light, and a screen that you just barely cant see. the doctor looks around a bit, then squirts some viniger solution on your cervix to highlight the abnormal cells, then looks some more. then he decided to take a sample (biopsy). that felt like a pulling, and was a bit odd. but it didnt really hurt, although I am told some women experince it diffrently. I asked for copies of the pics he took, and now I have pics of my cervix, and I can see exactly where the abnormal cells are, its kinda neat. I only had minor discharge after that, and they told me not to have sex for a week, I ended up having sex on day 6 with no problems.

we have talked about HPV, dysplasia, and paps on here before:

    Hi Rusty,

I had to have the colcoscopy four times (once every six months) and then went on to have the LLETZ treatment, where they burn off the abnormal section.
The colcoscopy is kinda uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt. It's just like having a pap smear done, just a bit more involved.

The LLETZ treatment (cryosurgery) is just as Ami described it, and it's true - you can't have sex for a month... which sucked because i had it done the week before my wedding!

There's no need to worry yourself too much at this stage. It's a good thing that you had a smear test and the abnormality was found at such an early stage.

Cervical hpv is very common, and unfortunately, other than an abnormal pap there is no way to test for it. I think it's like 76% or something like that percent of women will get it in their life time. Since men don't have a cervix they are unnafected and can only be carriers.

I am waiting on a pap to come back soon. I'm worried because the last guy I was with heard from his ex girlfriend that she has cervical hpv.
The sad thing is I had him get tested for what I thought was everything before I ever slept with him.

Well his doctor tested him for everything he could be tested for, and didn't inform him that there is not a test for hpv if you have no symptoms. So we both thought he'd been tested for everything.

Damnit! you try to be safe and it blows up in your face. I still have my fingers crossed though.

there is a DNA test for HPV, thinprep I think is the name, the thing is its expensive (so a lot of labs dont use it) and doesnt work on guys. my husband swore up and down that he had been tested for everything, and that i must have gotten it from someone else, but the truth is we will never know for sure.

HPV can have symptoms on guys as well as girls, before they use that little stick during the pap the doctor looks at your labia, she is looking for warts. the bad thing about that is that the kind of HVP most commonly associated with dysplasia/cancer useually dosent have any noticable symptoms (the warts). when they do the colp, they are also looking for warts, they figure with the camera they can look closer and see what a naked eye woulda missed. the only way a guy can know he has HPV is to have slept with a girl who knows she has it (ex: my husband knows he has it since we have had sex since I found out), or to have visible warts.

and the kicker? condoms dont protect aginst HPV. they help, but not 100%

Well, I go in on September 2 @ 9 in the morning. I have been with just my husband for three years this month. Like you guys have said, guys usually dont know they are current carriers. If I do have it and I got it from my husband, he better have gotten it about 3 1/2 years ago or b4 or you'll see headlines in the paper for wife brutally murders cheating husband!!!!!!!

Ok, maybe it might not be that drastic but what's a headline if you don't make front page!!!!! Hee Hee-

I will keep you guys up-to-date. Thanks so much for your information and support. I am feeling more relaxed about it. Most of my girlfriends after they had their babies had the same thing happen. Doctors stated it was just because of the mass change your body goes through after birth especially if you had a c-section and have not yet had a couple of regular periods. So we will see but I am still taking it seriously. Thanks again-

Cool...glad to hear that it's all ok.

Almost everyone I know has had at least ONE abnormal result...I had one...and it pissed me off to no end that I needed to "come back immediately for a follow-up", but when I called to schedule another appointment, I had to wait 3 1/2 weeks to get in. What's up with that? LOL

    Anywho...glad that it was nothing.
