    Default Belly dancing etc.

whee, there's a belly dancing class near me that I might actually be able to go to! yay! I've wanted to do this for awhile.
I also saw in the catalog of community classes "Sensual Dancing" - the description was "learn to dance with hand motions, body language, and a simple veil focusing on seduction" - heehee, sounded fun.
Anyone have any experience belly dancing or "sensual"-type of dancing? Does it help when doing stage exotic dancing? Sometimes when I'm on stage I think I'm lacking, like I could either do another pole trick or a few floor moves, but I'd like to seem more graceful and such while upright.

i tried belly dancing before. It was fun. I've also seen a couple features use belly dancing in their acts, so I say why not try it, it won't hinder and it might help your dancing.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I would definitely do it! Learning different types of dancing will, not only, spice up your stage sets, but help you learn how to really move your body in different ways. It can only help! Besides, what could be better than doing something that you love to do?

    Have fun and happy dance!!

I've done bellydancing. There's a big difference between doing it barefoot and doing it in eight inch heels tho :-)

Just don't mention to the belly dancing people that you dance - they get very upset about being "confused" with exotic dancers (cause of course there's nothing erotic about belly dancing lol) and they might not let you in the class if they know you strip.

I can't believe I missed this thread! Yippee....bellydancing is GREAT for learning stage moves that don't involve the pole or the floor. As a matter of fact, I am booked by 2 local stripclubs to do an actual authentic bellydance show as a "feature" because it is so in demand these days.

First things first. Lena is 100% accurate; don't tell other bellydancers that you are a stripper. Remember, bellydancers are civilian women, with the same prejudiced attitudes. The fact that we bellydancers also get crap from patrons at our shows doesn't help the fact. Like strippers, bellydancers get called whores sometimes, and it stings no matter what. I've performed bellydance for over 5 years and had many troubles in the community for being a dancer, even when I had quit stripping, so that's that.

www.bhuz.com is a great resource and you should be able to find a teacher through them. Also, if there is a restaurant or nightclub with bellydancing nearby, you can ask the performer about lessons. NYC has lots of great bellydancing as well, but the best of the best tend to be concentrated on the west coast.

Also, check out www.shira.net. Everything in that site is great, including some basic dance moves tutorials. I also taught myself how to play finger symbols through her site.

There is an older woman named Morocco who teaches out of NYC. I think you are in upstate NY, no? Well, if you can get down to the city, she is a legend: http://www.casbahdance.org/home.html

The best online magazine is http://www.gildedserpent.com/ . They have lots of reviews of events and videos.

If you can't find a local class, there are TONS of videos available on Ebay. I like the Jillina videos, they have excellent production values.

I incorporate lots of bellydance moves in stripping. The most important thing is to do the movements slowly, and with a wide leg stance. In authentic bellydance, you will want to have your feet together, toes forward. In stripping its good to raunch it up:

    Best moves:
    1. Backward and forward hip figure 8's.

    2. Mayans, or downward figure 8.

    3. Regular and reverse abdominal undulation. This takes time to learn how to control your upper and lower abs.

    4. Umi, or internal hip circle...makes your belly look like its going around in circles.

    5. Wide hip circle. This move is used by strippers all the time. Its even diagramed in the S-Factor book

    6. Khaleegi hair swings from side to side. Its a great floor move....

    7. Shimmies, as long as your butt isn't too wiggly. You can get your entire body to vibrate once you learn this move, but its not for everyone onstage nekid

Ask any teacher about these movements, plus there are many more!!

    Good luck!

Oh, and bellydancing in heels is ok, but I wouldn't recommend higher than 4-5" heels. I can do it in 6", but I've had many years to practice. Use a ballroom dance shoe or flat sandals if possible. In class, go barefut or use hermes sandals/ballet shoes. You can always put the roach stompers on after your set....Kat

Bellydancing is fun, and even if you don't pick up specifics that you can use on stage, it will be a fun workout.

I can all but guarantee that learning this very erotic form of expression will increase your earnings. I always encouraged new dancers at the club to take some sort of "real" dance classes. It improves your confidence at work and ofcourse your dance skills. I don't care what anyone says customers do notice the women who can really dance well.

Another great style that's good for strippers to learn besides belly dancing is salsa. Both are great for the waistline and the female spirit

    Sure Pazzo!

Thanks for the loads of resources Katrine!
I've wanted to try out belly dancing, though thanks for the warning about saying I'm stripper, I didn't even think about that.
I did ballet and such for a few years, but is so rigid, except for a bit of flexibility I haven't really seen it help my exotic dancing. I is excited!

How long did you train ? If it was after age 13 and for more than a 3 years then I bet it helps your stripping more than you think.

You probably naturaly pay more attention to your bodylines and musical timing. I bet it helps you strike pretty effective poses too and gives a more dramaic/sexy/confident appearance to your time on stage than a women without you're experience.

12-15 years old. Kinda. It helps some with the musical timing, and the "smiling no matter freakin' what" on stage - man does it drive me nuts when people miss a dramatic cue in the song. Heh, I think the confidence is from being a stage whore in general.

Belly dancing is a lot of fun. You can't help but feel sexy doing it. I got a workout video so I'm doing it to stay in shape. It works every part of the body. I also do some yoga. I'm gonna try salsa next. That sound like fun. ce:

I've been wanting to learn bellydance for about 2 years now. I thought it seemed sensous. I even ordered the Veena and Neena video series and practied a little and ordered a sort of bellydance costume. Then I showed the Veena and Neena videos to my boyfriend and did a few moves and he said he didn't think it looked sexy. He said it was okay but not sexy at all- so I figured guys didn't like it and I stopped learning it. I think the Veena and Neena videos in particular must suck and also different guys have different perferences.
From what you guys said it seems that men like it and it could help with dance I think I might start practicing it again. That was a fabulous list of resources you posted Katrine. Moving your hips and butt does seem to be an important part of exotic dancing and this would add another dimension to it. For a few months I've been eyeing the jinggly chain belts sold on ebay those seem sexy to me and of course veils are sexy.

    TRY YOGA!!!
    and more yoga!!!
I have been practicing yoga for a few years now and will be teaching in a month...
besides how centered it has made me it also has improved my dancing 100%...
I am much more graceful, aware of my movements and not to mention circus preformer flexible which always helps with tips...
I no longer wear shoes when I dance... I just do a routine of some weird ballet/contortionism mix and make bank....
customers usually love the flexibility and the absence of shoes...
it gives dancers the ability to....well...DANCE!

heheh, given the amount of times I've slid around on my "blown tire" stillettos [ya know, where the non-skid bottom starts breaking up or just comes off] I'm tempted to just not wear 'em. But I really notice a difference in not having a 'sticking out' tummy - I think I'll keep 'em for a little while.

Second on the yoga rec! My yoga practice has helped my bellydance and stripping immensely. I could never do the splits before yoga and now can do them every which way!

I don't really recommend Neena and Veena. They are ok, but there are far better videos out there. For an example of a very sensual yet authentic bellydance video, check out "Suhaila Unveiled." Its a performance video of one of the top US dancers in the world, Suhaila Salimpour. She invented her own technique and style.

Bellydance is as sexy as you make it, the dance is very organic to a woman. Not all men are going to like it, but not all men are going to care about watching a stage show, or that you are not going to blow them for 20 bucks. There is definately a huge market for the dance in both family-oriented and adult venues......

Btw, many clubs won't let you perform on stage barefoot. I've already been yelled at for doing this, so check your rules first!

Give it a shot ladies, you'll love it!

The sexiest dance I've ever seen was a bellydancer... she was dancing with a candle and doing alot of undulations... I've always wished I could do that on stage, and then wind up with a wax show.

Alot of girls here in Portland are wearing sandalshoes...basically they are for modern dance...but they have a pad under the ball of your foot and nothing on the back....kinda of greek looking...
I prefer to look as if I am wearing nothing so I bought the kind of sandalshoe which only covers the ball of the foot and doesnt have any annoying straps, nude in color....you appear to be barefoot...
    no laws broken.

Alot of girls here have been trained in some sort of dance...ballet, jazz, salsa, flamenco and incorporate into thier routine...
thats why many are tossing the shoes....
but in Portland men seem to appreciate stage shows, I think in other cities it wouldnt fly....they could give a rats ass if your talented...
    haha...

I'm going to order the Jillina begginer video Katrine recommended. It sounds like fun learning bellydance-you guys made me remember I've been wanting to learn it. I'm also doing yoga from a tape. Maybe someday I'll be able to do the splits from the yoga hopefully.

Here is a discussion about shoes for bellydance:

For a stripshow, or any glamorous performance, I think some heels are the most appropriate.

    Here are Hermes sandals:
    http://www.awardance.com/catalog/catalogf.html

I have a pair, they are ok and can be used for modern dance too.
