VegasVixen is back online, so I'm assuming she's ok (are you ok, Vegas?). She just posted about needing new clubs to dance in since her hubby is being transferred.

Glad to hear that you are doing well...you definitely need to let us know how Japan goes...have a great day!

As I've mentioned in other threads about dancing in Tokyo/Japan, I have spent a fair amount of time in the gaijin strip clubs there over the last 15 years or so (as a customer, of course) and would be happy to try to answer any questions for you, mermaidnz...or anyone else going or considering going there. About either the clubs or the practicalities of life as a short term resident (my visits have ranged in length from a week or so up to about 6 months).

I have also answered a bunch of questions via SW internal emails for other dancers and kept copies. So, I could forward them to anyone interested; they cover quite a few obvious issues...sort of a FAQ.

Email me or post if you are interested.

Re your laptop and getting online in Tokyo, there is definitely at least one cyber-cafe used by quite a few dancers in Roppongi (within 2 or 3 blocks of 7th Heaven), and probably there are a bunch. I have never used them, but I'll bet they even have machines with English language operating systems since Roppongi is one of the major areas of town where foreigners live, work and hang-out. So, your laptop is not your only option.

I would say "breasts" of luck, since she has both boobies back now

Fwiiw, I have exchanged email addys with quite a few dancers in Tokyo over the years and used them in many cases too, so a lot of dancers do have email access one way or the other. A number of dancers have told me that they use internet cafes, and these are not too hard to find...some in Roppongi near a lot of the well known clubs...other places too of course.

As for connecting your own laptop, which is a lot better than a semi-public and expensive cafe machine I know, I am not sure there is any very good and practical way if there are no phone lines where you are staying. If you do have a phone, there are plenty of dial-up services (http://www.gol.com/english/ has worked ok for me) with PoPs or (A)DSL type connection available. Years ago I heard that there was a long waiting list, like months, to get a new phone line installed; I don't know if that is still the case. There is technology available to go online via a cell phone, but you have to have the right sort of phone and cables, and it is generallyl difficult to get them working...also slow and expensive way to connect. (But btw, all dancers in Tokyo, and nearly everyone in fact, has a cell phone; you will definitely want one, and it might be worth trying to find out in advance what the best and cheapest options are.) Finally, if your laptop has a wireless card, there are wireless "hot spots" in some public places, but I don't know much about how that would work, what it would cost and so forth.

One other issue is security for a laptop; I don't know how easy or hard it would be to make sure it didn't get stolen out of your room or something like that.

Mermaidnz and/or Kitty-chan may be able to provide better info, but that is what I know.

For curiosity's sake, does anyone know if a US cell phone that's GSM would work overseas? I guess you'd have to get new service for when you travelled, but just wondering if the phone itself would still be good

you WILL need to buy new cellphones.

no phones from overseas ( unless you put it onto ROAMING and pay thru the roof) will work here, as japan is a little backwards and has a totally different, uh wavelenght thingie something or other, it means other phones dont work here.

also, voltage, even a converter doesnt do the trick. leave the hair dryer at home and buy a new one here.

That depends on where home is, of course. Appliances from the US work fine, but those from NZ or Australia, among other places, would not.

Also, there is a difference in AC current frequency between eastern Japan (Kanto area) and western Japan (Kansai area), but it does not affect most electric gadgets....but some; for example, I think that stereos and some clocks are affected.

Be careful about overseas calls from Japan; they can cost a bundle if you just dial direct through NTT or KDD (the major public phone companies) or on your cell. You probably want to get a special foreign calling card or service of some type. Also, it is A LOT cheaper to call Japan from the US than to call the US from Japan for some reason. Calling to Japan from the US can be as little as US$0.15/min, but I have never found anything less than 3 or 4 times that much going the other way. I am not sure if the same applies to calls to/from other countries.
