I am having the hardest time getting to sleep. I don't want to take any over the counter products like Tylenol PM. Does anyone have any natural suggestions ? I am tired and I look like a freaking zombie.
Thanks in advance..

have you tried Chamomile or Valarien root? both are herbs. I might be off on the spelling, i don't have my herb book down here with me. they are suppose to aid in calming and relaxation. aromatherpy... a combo of lavender and vanilla. I'll get back to you some time tommorrow just to make sure i gave you the right aromatherapy combo. i hope this helps.

Chamomile tea is good.. start drinking it awhile before you go to bed though as it can take awhile to sink in, its basically just a relaxant.
I find I sleep better if I have a good dinner with some wholegrain carbs or sweet potato... not too much but enough so I don't go to bed hungry. Sam Graci (authour of the food connection) suggests eating bread as an after dinner snack, something about the complex carbs is spose to help you sleep.
Getting lots of fresh air and exercise during the day can also help
xo

Ok, I'll give the Chamomile a try. I have a lavender plant, maybe adding some of the buds to my bath will help me catch up on some zzz's
Thanks ladies![]()

Farrah -
I have tried everything under the sun! Finally my doc put me on ambien, which is actually wonderful. you fall sound asleep and wake up revived. but you only take it for 2 - 3 week and by then your body should be back on a normal schedule - it really does work an it is short term.
if all else fails, i would try it for a week. take it at the same time every night and within 30 minutes, you drift off and wake 8 hours later.
teas work well for some people but not me - i tried everything out there til i found this stuff.
good luck hun![]()

Wow, the ladies here have nailed my little ritual to help me get my 4-hour sleeping span per night.. hehe.
From a more local perspective-
Safeway has aroma therapy scented candles. I go through about $180 a month of these, never have less than 5-6 going at night and start them a good 1-2 hours before bed. The green's have lavender, the whites have a light vanilla scent. The tall ones are about $5 each, last 1.5-2 weeks of nightly/overnight use.
Cigarettes Cheaper have incense for under $2 a box. They have some specially labeled "Chamomile" and I burn one of these before turning in. The Rosemary ones are also particularly good. Combined with the above scented candles makes for a heavenly aroma therapy to sleep to.
Of course, it doesn't hurt to also...right before bed.
Sleeping surface is of the utmost importance. I have always had a hard time sleeping on a flat bed and I'm also a major pillow whore. A 13" matress futon with a bazillion pillows helps loads- or some other soft, utterly comfortable sleeping arrangement may just be what the doctor ordered.
And.. if none of this works, a call to the nearestk: to share the futon is a surefire way to restful sleep. Add a half glass of champagne with someone warm and cuddly to share in the incense and candles works wonders. Something about a warm body draped over you works better than anything else I've found.
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.
My get to sleep tricks are many and varied. My favorite is an orgasm with a partner, but without works too, just not quite as effective.
I also like to take valerian root, and yes it stinks bad. Just take them quick with a glass of water. I've never noticed any after taste. I take melatonin to curb carb cravings at night before bed, and it also helps to induce sleep.
Another trick is to take a hot shower. Bringing the body tempeture down is important to falling asleep, and when you take a hot shower, it will slow you metobolism a bit to try to bring the body tempreture down. This will continue even after your all dried off and in your bed.
Make sure the room you are sleeping in is cool, dark and quiet. Also, no pets allowed on the bed, either. Pets will do more to disrupt sleep than anything else I can think of.
I have dark velvet drapes on my windows. They do a great job of blocking out the morning sun (about when I'm going to bed the sun is coming up). I also run a fan in my room to keep it cool, and create white noise so I can't hear the traffic on the street as folks are leaving for work in the morning.
If all this fails to get you a good nights sleep, maybe stress is getting to you, and a visit to your doctor may be in order.
Good luck and sweet dreams![]()

the combo of vanilla and lavender is correct.

I used to be an insomniac and my doctor wouldn't prescribe me sleep meds (tried to kill myself with them once....) so instead, I would warm up a cup of milk and add honey to it. The warming process releases Triptophen in the milk and that will put you to sleep. It's the same shit in turkey that makes you fall asleep after Thanksgiving dinner. Also, try mashing some bananas and eating them like that. The triptophen gets released from there when you mash them and that's a double dosage of natural sleep inducing ingredients.
Cut out caffiene in your diet after 5PM, do not excercise in the evening, do not nap during the day (unless it's for 45 minutes or shorter), and avoid spicy foods in the evening. Hot showers or baths work too!
Sweet dreams!

I have used Ambien and the homeopathic pill--calms forte--which works wonderfully to get me to sleep...I have posted before regarding insomnia, I definitely know what its like on a regular basis to not be able to get enough sleep.....Alot of times I cant sleep because Im stressed or worried..My mind is always going..A nice hot bath helps to relax me before bed on the especially stressful nights..i got 7-9 hours of sleep last night because I took a bath before bed actually-
ME too

Thanks all, I am going to try the suggestions. I really need to get about 12 hours of sleep under my belt, I am tired as hell !!

Valerian root has been popular in Russia for centuries. My grandma used to take it and I remember the terrible smell, ugh!
BUT, I now take that and melatonin for sleep. Honestly, Ambien is da bomb for sleep, but I had to stop keeping it around the house because it made me more prone to consume substances that keep one from being able to sleep naturally, ahem.....
The best bet is a glass of wine, some good 420, and an orgasm.....

I do aromatherapy with soundscapes in the background. That always works the best for me.

to comment on the ambien: that was actually the "herbal in pill form" I was talking about. It works absolutely wonderful. Knocks you right out and I wake up feeling so refreshed and revived, not groggy at all.
Although I like Katrines idea better!
sorry you can't sleep farrah. i'd like to recommend natural remedies, but i haven't slept naturally for a very long time. i'd also like to put in my vote for ambien. but i understand if you're reluctant to take it.
this may sound corny, but if your thoughts are racing, do a guided visualization and "drop" the thoughts into the ocean or into a well. far away. if racing thoughts aren't an issue for you, then hopefully this made you laugh. hope you feel better![]()

I like that idea of dropping my thoughts into the ocean. I will definately give that a try.
I am a little reluctant to start taking sleeping pills, I have taken them in the past and I am looking for something more natural.
I do so much to take care of my body but, I can't get enough sleep which IMHO is the BEST thing for the body.
I have read in several books that lack of sleep really ages the body drastically. However one change reset their clock by getting 12 hours of sleep.
The funny thing about 420 is that it actually gets me very hype not sleepy in the least bit. LOL I am going to pick some insense, aroma therapy candles and try a nice hot bath or shower.
Wish me luck

I used to have the worst insomnia too. It was the most isolating, insane total hell. Here is what helped me:
As much as you possibly can keep a regular schedule for going to bed. Even if it's always 4 am. The body needs to know when it can relax. If on one night you go to bed at 4 and the next you are so tired you try to go to bed at 10 the body ends up in a state of hyper vigilance, not knowing when it should relax or stay alert. I've read that when you go to bed before midnight sleep is 4 times more beneficial but I know that's not realistic for most dancers. A regular schedule is the most important thing.
Use Rescue Remedy, it's a Bach flower essence available at any natural foods store. It says to take four drops but I take a whole dropper split between over and under the tongue. Its excellent for stress in general.
This may sound strange but it has been very helpful, it's something I learned in the final relaxation pose in yoga. Starting with the feet say "I relax my feet, my feet are relaxed, my feet are relaxing". Go up your entire body this way, ankles, legs, knees, etc. Sometimes when I'm feeling especially wired I'll get into even more detail like "I relax my spine, liver, breathing, anxiety, fear, etc". Honestly this has been the most helpful technique of any I've used.
When you have insomnia drink a lot of water during the day, and try to breathe deeply when you can remember to. It won't help you sleep but since the body is in a state of anxiety it needs to be kept hydrated and calm as much as possible. Rest is very important for chronic insomnia so keep that regular bedtime even if you are just lying there.
I completely understand how much it sucks and I hope some of these suggestions might help. Good luck!
What shakti said.
Also, melatonin. The quick-acting stuff will make you sleepy with a half hour to an hour, and it's good for you anyways...it's a hormone that your body starts producing in lesser amounts after the age of 25, and it is said (not 'proven' though) to help slow the aging process, scavenge free radicals etc.

for my surgery my doctor gave me zolpidem, which is generic ambien. I took one the night before my surgery. I HATED it. it made me feel really, really, high, in such a bad way, the room spun, and eventually I passed out. I did sleep, but I dont remember anything, normally I remember wakeing, or dreaming, or something, but no, nothing. and I really didnt feel all that well rested.
so thats my expericnce with sleeping pills.
I cant sleep either, and I know why, my bed is too soft, too lumpy, they set off sirens everyday, and my husband stole the sheets. mostly its the matress.
