    Default any writers here?...

Do we have any writers on the board? I am looking into getting some experience in the field.. mainly magazine articles and such at this stage (non dance related) in the health, fitness, nutrition, yoga arena. Thought I'd put it out there and see if anyone had any ideas or recommendations about where to start/where to look.

    Yup.

Get one of the Writers Market books and look for conferences in your region. Find a writing group that you like, attend it, get yourself critiqued. It'll inspire you to crank out words.

Start with one magazine. Be familiar with their typical content, read their submission guidlines, and submit a couple articles.

If you're just beginning, you probably have a better chance of getting published if you start locally, at a daily or weekly paper. Take your story ideas and clips (or spec articles) to them.

Yep, I used to write for a Fitness magazine in Australia, as well as other various fitness newsletters. As I do not have a degree in journalism, and having moved to a foreign country 2 years ago, I have had little luck in getting journo work again (despite the fact that I have been published several times over and am better authorised to write on fitness than most other "fitness journalists" I read these days).

I aslo write fiction and am currently trying to get a comic I wrote inked.

My advice is to start writing on a topic that inspires you and have some friends read and get their opinions. This is kinda how I started. The mag I wrote for in Oz kept hiring me because my articles were apparently the most read and liked by their readers, so I went with that.

write and submit constantly lots of rejection but you keep at it - hit em all (well the ones you are interested in) small big any publication you feel your submission may apply to.

Just like acting lots of rejection but you keep pluggin away.

    Sooner or later you'll hit.

Take some writing classes for skill and to hone your craft they also look good on the resume...

    Perseverence will pay off.

Dont be afraid to do it free either, just getting published is goal, and the credits count in your favor.

Never explain yourself to anyone, because the person who likes you doesn't need it and the person that dislikes you won't believe it.

It was "Oz Fitness journal". They were a cool, high end style magazine, that lasted unfortunately only for about 15 months or so. I contributed articles for most of those issues.

I was semi-famous in fitness back there so I was kinda invited to contribute, although we had intial contact through advertising (they had contacted the gyms I was aerobics director for to advertise, and I had to call back to say no; we got talking and off it went).

I'm by no means a writer, but hubby is. More as a hobby now till he get published for the 1st time(besides mags, and papers). But I don't know how much help he will be since he writes novels. And most of them are fantasy fiction. I'll as him though and get back to ya!
