    Default cleanse without side effects?

I've been thinking that I would like to try a cleanse. For starters, I smoke, and drink, and consume way too much coffee, so I'm sure my body is overloaded with crap. Additionally, I am having trouble getting nutrients from food, the worst being B12, I have tested deficient for the third time in 2 years. I do eat meat, and don't restrict any foods from my diet necessarily, but I do avoid milk, soy, and rice protein because I can't tolerate them. I occasionally drink the lactose-treated milk (I need some milk on oatmeal, etc.), or use the pills to treat myself to an ice cream.
I have heard good things about periodic cleanses, that you can regain energy, lose the sluggish feeling, aid digestion, and increase absorption of nutrients from food and supplements after doing one.
I've done some research online, but one thing seems to be common in some programs - they encourage diarrhea as part of the cleansing process. I am absolutely NOT willing to go that route. I've had enough issues already with my food intolerances, and I don't want any part of that. Additionally, I get migraines when my blood sugar drops, and they can be doozies. If I ended up with a killer migraine, and had to ingest a bunch of meds, it would seem to defeat the purpose of trying a cleanse in the first place.
    Any suggestions? Experiences?

I've done 2 gallstone cleanses...I hoped that the side effects wouldn't be too bad, but I was disapponted

The effects of the cleanses were good and noticeable, but I was out of order for at least a day both times. I did the Hulda Clark cleanse outlined on curezone.com (the one with Epsom salts and Olive Oil), and I still can't even smell Olive oil to this day without getting sick. So maybe don't do that one if you like Olive Oil

There are things you can do to cleanse your body out slower, like taking Milk Thistle, Oil of Oregano and quitting all the bad stuff (join the naked truth quit group! Haha, I'm a dropout). Also maybe look into chelation if you're not absorbing B12 well- if I remeber correctly, this could be an effect of heavy metal toxicity.

Our bodies are self cleansing actually. Alot of people like to push this process along however.

There are many good books out there that are "gentle" on the body, say like a partial cleaning, and your body will kick in and do the rest.

Alot of people say, and i tried a vegetable and some fruit cleansing, this may not make your sugar level drop. You will eliminate more at first they say, because vegetables (mix them up to many various types) will cause a elimination. Drinking alot of water, and water with lemon (real lemon, but just a tad each drink) will also aid you along.

As far as cigs, booze and junk food, our bodies will clean out of this stuff if you simply stop taking them in!!!

Good luck, check out some info. that would be of help to what type of cleaning you want on-line or at the library. Many different kinds to chose from, even for people who need to eat like you because of blood sugar.

    Lotsa luck!!

I have also done a few Dr Hulda Clark Liver / Gall bladder flushes, though I use an alternative recipe now, I couldn't stand the taste of the epsom salts! (You can also use a different oil if you don't like olive oil...) I've had Cronic Fatigue Syndrome and the flushes have defianatly helped. It rocks and the best thing about it is that the whole thing takes under 24 hours so it's fairly convenient!!! I've had minimal or no discomfort when doing the flushes and am trying to do at least 1 a month from now on. Last time I combined it with a 4 day apple cleanse - that's easy, you just eat apples and apples alone for 4 days- it's good for the Liver, but it's probably not going to be suitable for you if you have a blood sugar problem. Amazingly you don't feel hungry, though by the 4th day I was dreaming about huge platters of food, lol.
Unfortunatly it's near impossible to cleanse and not experience some sort of side effect from it. If you want to clear toxins from your body you have to expect some discomfort as they come out, but it's well worth it because you feel so much better afterwards!
I'm also planning on starting Chelation Therepy soon, I'll let you know how it goes.
If you're having trouble absorbing nutrients it's often a B vitamin deficiency - I forget which 1 but can look it up for you when I get home in 2 weeks. Taking Acidopholis should help too.

I have done several cleanses, love them but they are a committment!

I did a 10 day cleansing fast supported by the elderberry cleanse kit available in a decent health supplement store, its about a hundred bux but worth it.

The drink from the elderberry helps keep your sugars balanced, but out of the ten days you only get one woozy day and the rest ROCK.

I felt SO good after the cleanse I didnt want to go off!!

I had a clearer mind, faster elimination, skin, hydration levels - all of it, it was akin to euphoria.

Gosh, I think I am due for another one...LOL!

aussie what are you doing the chelation therapy for? Any certain aliment? I am studying nutrution at the moment and the info in my course notes recommends only doing this type of therapy if you have calcium deposits in you body that are course problems (atherosclerosis) or circulation problems. The liquids they use for it bind together with the minerals in your body and excrete them via the kidneys. If you do go ahead with it make sure they are giving you good multivitamins to replace what you will lose. Chelation therapy is a pretty abrasive therapy usually used to treat particular ailments so I would be interest to know what they have suggested it for.

Milk thistle is a good all round cleanser that is easy enough to take with no side effects. It comes in a few forms but try to avoid the liquid form as it is usually preserved in alchol which is counteractive considering it works on the liver. If you do use milk thistle make sure your bowels are working regularly otherwise the toxins moved from the liver will be absorb back into the body via the intestines (yuck I know but true).

    Simple things to do are
1- drink the juice of half a lemon in a BIG glass of water every morning on rising
2- Eat your vege.... raw or steamed if you can.
3- Eat your fruit (preferably on an empty stomach before a meal as oppsed to after)
4- Avoid junk food, using it for a treat every now and then instead of your main staple

Another thing to remeber Ara is that cleansing is a long process and if you haven't done it before I would suggest to take it slowly. As much as the body tries to clean itself toxins still do build up. The less effectively your body is working and the more junk you take in the more toxins your body will have. Try to make small changes daily and when you feel you have a 'healthier' lifestyle try a cleanse then. There is no point doing a big cleanse and then going straight back to the lifestyle that caused it.

Good simple cleanses are in books like 'the liver cleansing diet' I found this good as it is an easy but effective book that gives lots of good recipes and suggestions aswell as informative information. It was written by a doc so she knows what she is talking about. It is pretty small too. 'fit for life' is also another good classic.
Or you could just have one day a week where you all you eat for the day is fruit and vege (and clean protien i you need it).

Sorry for all the info... a bit drawn out but I hope it helps. I am happy to answer any q's you might have.

I, personally, don't do this, b/c I'm hypoglycemic. If I don't eat something throughout the day, I will get bad shakes, & reactions. My point being, make sure your health is good b/4 you try it. & don't do it in the dead of winter, or in a stressful time.

Thanks for all the info. I've heard about the milk thistle, maybe worth a try. Krys, really good point about overall lifestyle change rather than doing a big cleanse then right back to bad habits. I have a bad tendency to think in terms of all or nothing! I like the idea of trying one clean day a week as a gradual change that I will be more likely to keep up. I really need to at least cut back on the smoking for sure, that's a big one for me right now.

Careful, milk thistle reduces the efficacy of birth control pills.
