Five Reasons Why Women Need to Invest

What makes “women and investing unique from “men and investing?

The how to invest and what to invest in are pretty much the same for all.

What is different are the reasons why women need to invest. And in my opinion the reasons are truly compelling. Here are five sound reasons why women need to get into this game called investing.

What 5 reasons would you give for why women need to invest... especially exotic dancers ???

Women are so used to letting men take the financial reins, but having a penis does not make one a financial authority.

I've never been a big fan of the "Rich Dad" series.

I recently bought "Millionaire Women Next Door" by Thomas J. Stanley. Good book!

Of course, not- but society allows women to coast by being dependant upon men, and so a lot of women do, it's common and accepted. Men are groomed from youth to be money-makers.

A lot of women don't even think about investing, they assume that their [future] husband will deal with that.

Which is why it's an important point to make.

    #1 and #2.
Because women, on average, live longer than men. A person with a tendancy for immediate gratification is more likely to have less resources when you are 80 or 85 or 90, just when certain costs of living (assisted living or nursing home) kick in.

(Not sexist and certainly not all women) Women tend to be more conservative investors focussed more on not losing than winning. This is something that varies by person and Melonie is by no means an overly cautious investor, but as a group women are more likely to invest in "safe" investments like bonds and CD's than stocks. $ for $ saved this will lead to a lower return on investment.
#4 Kim's comment about being less time working. The way to offset this is save as much as you can early and let compounding do its work.
#5 The tendancy of married females to let the male make most financial decisions combined with #1. If you do not have the information when the female is thrown to having to make all of them they do not know how.

The poverty stuff mentioned in the article is somewhat exgaerated by the experiences of The Great Depression for someone now in their 70s or 80s warping the numbers.

All families (both partners) need to be partners in planning and managing money for the future. Not to end on a down note but women (and men) need to protect their nest egg from devastation from a failed marriage/bad choice resulting in the responsible one losing assets on breakup.

the only reasons I might add are female "self-empowerment", the arguable fact that women, being more disciplined than men in many cases, actually do have a better natural temperament for investing, and my favorite point that sexy women can place themselves in a position of garnering inside info much easier than men can (particularly if the woman happens to be an exotic dancer working in a club near a stock exchange LOL).

It has been proven that women are more stable long-term investors!

    Nina,
I have no doubt that there are women who are superior investors (and men who are too), but as a social scientist I would take a tremendous amount of convincing to prove that point in any direction positive or negative. It is loaded with vague terms (like stable) and no one has all the data. NO ONE, not even the IRS!

If one were to examine the accounts of a major account holders at say a brokerage firm like Schwab (example only, and I doubt if they have), it would not in fact prove the point because the group is biased to be those who invested at Schwab as oppossed to those who "invested" in Cd's or T-Bills.

I am afraid that this in the realm of urban legend, and is not an assertion that can be proven either true or false with neutral facts.

1-5) NEVER depend on (or expect) a man to look out for your financial well being...

(hell...they don't even look out for your well being in general...so i say become self reliant...then you won't have to depend on anyone to take care of...or look out for you...especially a 'man&#039
Why do some people still have to fight...to get the same opportunities...that are given to others??...

Look out for self...because noone else will...AND
The greatest revenge in the world...is success...

    Reclusivness...is a good thing.

As far as the male vs female investor goes, I would say that in general, women tend to be more emotional about their investments, but have a tendency to want to hold losing positions long after they could have sold at the peak, against all advice. this does make them better long-term, buy-and-hold investors though, Although this is not to say that there are not men out there who are way over emotional about things. I can think of one in particular, who wants to liquidate all of his equity positions every time the market hiccups. Men tend to be more impatient and want to make the money now, and so they often miss out on long term opportunities.

I know that was a bit off the original topic, so on that note, I can say that there are a lot more than 5 reasons why women should invest, especially women who are young, making a lot of money, but will be old before they know it, and most of them will not be able to make as much anymore.
