    Default Save Your Legs?

Hey ladies, I had my first evening last Wednesday. I am still sore I wasn't prepared to have to crawl up my stairs in pain...lol I do work out at the gym regularly but obviously don't work the muscles I used. I believe it was because I tried to keep my weight off of the customers lap. I am 5'8 and just don't want to put their legs to sleep... What do you do to preserve your legs?

Icy Hot works good too but I wouldn't wear it at work unless you want to smell like a grandma.

Trust me you wont feel heavy to most guys. I had the same complex and used to say, "Do I feel heavy? If so, I'll change spots" and they always said no. So dont worry about it. Concentrate on giving your lapdance and you'll be ok.

(Dont know if your club permits this, but at mine, I take off my shoes during laps. MUCH easier on the legs)

This is not about saving your legs, since you're not hurting them--you're exercising them! After dancing for a little while longer, you won't be sore anymore because you will have built up those muscle you used and your body will adjust to the new moves. I promise, it will go away if you're working regularly.

If you want to work on your quads, that might help too.

Good point Susan. LOL I forgot to mention, that you WILL get stronger. However, in the beginning, it does feel like torture.

    Stretch before and after work.

It's been two months of dancing, and my legs still get sore after working some days in a row. I never sit down and it's an 8 hr workout in heels. Get massages - there's a massage therapist that comes into my club as a customer that will massage us (good for looking "busy" when it's slow) and some guys will actually pay for a dance to rub your feet or legs for you. Go to a spa for a full massage when it's really bad, but usually the partial massage that comes w/ a pedicure would suffice. And I dunno about you, but my legs get bruised - arnica gel is my godsend.
...and the day came, when the risk it took to remain closed in a bud became worse than the risk it took to blossom.

I don't know if you are or not, but drink lots of water. It helps to dilute the toxins your muscles release that cause the burn. My physical therepist shared that info with me when I said that I didn't like water. It seems to have helped me.

Thanks girls, I normally drink a bunch of water but find myself accepting mixed drinks and forget to take care of myself. The legs are a bit better after several more nights and I got tremendous relief from my cardio salsa work out. As for bruising, my skin is so delicate. I live on oral and topial arnica. I guess what I was wondering is does the customer usually prefer you sit on his lap or on the side of the chair? I have asked if they are comfortable and they always say yes so I suppose it's fine.... Might I add that everything I have read has given me great insight. I felt very prepared even though there is no subsitute for just doing it. I think it will be a long term venture:-)

I was in great shape when I started dnacing (biking 30+ miles a day) and I still had some very sore legs, especially quads, my first couple of weeks dancing. Even now if I take a week or two off, I feel it when I return to work.

For fast releif of leg pain, stop drinking alcohol, and have two ibuprofin every three hours. It works as a build up effect, that is why you have to take it every three hours. Drink lots of water, eat plenty of protien foods, and try to eat cottage cheese or take a glutamine supplement at night before bed. This is a body builder trick to relive pain from strenous workouts. Also try eating pineapple to prevent bruising, and broken capilaries. If you don't like pineapple you can take a supplement called bromalain (sp?) which will do the same thing.

The other thing you should do is work through the pain. Keep working and you will feel better in a little while. One caveate is that if you are feeling joint pain, don't push it.

good luck and get those dances, Girl!

Another tip, treat4two, rub some Tiger Balm on your knees if they hurt you after work. Just a little bit does wonders. Just don't be an idiot, like me, and rub your eye after. Doh.

One thing that has saved me A LOT of leg/quad pain is removing my shoes before giving a dance. I always do this and at times when I've tried to go back to doing dances with shoes on, it's so much more work. A ton more. I know some people object to removing their shoes and dancing bare footed, but I've seen a lot of dancers doing it and have heard from many more that it saves on lots of pain in the beginning. It really makes a difference at the end of the night if you do a lot of dances.

Stretching is very important too, as some girls mentioned already, as are your shoes. I wear a really high platform, for example, but the actual slant from toe to heel is not much at all. I can't wear shoes that have my foot in a super high arch all night or I will die by the end.

Other than that though, much of the "new dancer" aches will go away after a month or two, depending on how many nights per week you work. Like anything physical you stick with for awhile, your body will adjust to it.

As long as your club allows you to do so, sounds great. My club does not allow you to take your shoes off, it is a going against the health code...
