Default ? for those with makeup brush collections

How do you care for your makeup brushes? What do you use to wash them with? I usually just wash mine with whatever shampoo I'm currently using. But I wonder if there's some way to better care for them. Also, can you "sterilize" makeup brushes? Can I swish them in rubbing alcohol before they dry or would that be just totally ruining the fibers?

I use shampoo or antibacterial soap and then rinse them in scalding hot water, then let them air dry.

*whew* I'm not the only one who uses shampoo.

I'm curious about the alcohol though. Does anybody ever do a final rinse in alcohol?

Thanks ladies. It just didn't seem right to have to purchase special makeup brush cleanser when the things are made of hair anyhow.

I use 70% rubbing alcohol, once a week. My brushes last as long as they should, I've never noticed any fibre damage. hth

I use Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree or Baby soap and really hot water. If I am doing makeup on other people, I wipe them down with rubbing alcohol I keep in a little sprayer. I've never had any problems and they seem to last their normal lifespan.

With natural bristle brushes though, i've experienced some brittleness in the fibres with too much exposure to alcohol...so it's a good idea in principle, just be careful.
I use a special brush cleaner, mac makes a good one, but when i run out/can't afford it, I use baby shampoo and make sure I rinse really good.

It depends what your brushes are made of.

Mine are all natural hairs. I wash them in baby shampoo, since it's milder than others. No alcohol, as that can dry out the hairs and make them brittle.

To dry, squeeze them between extended fingers to get excess moisture out and dry them flat with the bristle hanging free, like over a counter edge. Drying them face up will cause moisture to seep down and get trapped, which encourages mold, fungus and bacteria growth.

yeah mine are natural bristles. Those brushes are pretty damn expensive and I'd like to protect my "investment."

How do makeup artists clean theirs? Just wipe them with alcohol? When you get your makeup done, say at MAC, do they use a fresh clean brush on each different person?

^ They have alcohol-based spray brush cleaner at most makeup counters. However, the counters have a continous, replenished supply of fresh company brushes as they wear out rapidly
