Default has anyone ever changed their real name?

I'm going to be changing my name... my last name will be totally different and my first name will just be different by one letter. I'm worrying about how to tell people though. People that I'm close to already know, and people that I deal with professionally or at school, I don't see a problem telling them, hey, I changed my name - it's this now, but if you forget and call me the other it's no big deal. It's the other people I'm worrying about telling... casual freinds and people who move in the same social circles.

Anyways, has anyone ever changed their name? How did you handle it? Any advice?

Is there a real need to tell them? Or can you simply start transitioning over by using your new name on forms, signatures, etc?

The only time I have changed my name was through a marriage or divorce. And that was only the last name. I did however shorten my 1st name and people I went to school with still say my full 1st name. Then I know exactly where I know them from. LOL But anywho, good luck to ya!

I am getting ready to do this too.. I'm taking a completely different last name (but still family) I'm taking my Grandmother's maiden name as my last name, but keeping my first name.

Of course, my family is wondering why I am not taking my original last name, but honestly, I just hate my original last name and no need to associate myself with it.

For 15 bucks I fill out a paper and its done. They will post a legal notice indicating that if anyone has any concerns to speak now or forever hold their peace sort of thing. Usually takes about 30 days.

The only problem I forsee in doing this is getting all my bank accounts, SSN and other stuff changed.

The social security card will be a minor pain...and you (both) will likely need to keep TWO of them (based on what I've seen my ex go through.)

Sidenote: Gynger - I think that is most cool.

    Gynger,

I'm concerned. Where do I send my objections?

Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I actually changed both my first and last names less than a month ago. In most states you will need to file a legal petition with the county court, publish it in the legal ad section of the newspaper for a couple weeks, and then you have a court hearing where the judge makes sure you're not changing your name to evade creditors or prosecution, and voila! you have a new name! getting the social, driver's license, bank account, credit cards, etc., changed was not as hard as I thought it would be. As far as who to tell which name to, I'm still working on that. I would not have my family or good friends call me by a different name, that would be weird. I still have all the forms on the computer, I can email them to you if you'd like. Just email me at [email protected] and i'll be happy to send you all the info I have.
