Default Help can't get into the music :(

I've been dancing a couple of months now I normally have the dj play R&B hip hop, Nelly, Usher, Chingy ect. I think you get the picture. Im one of a handful of girls that request this type of music since its the music i enjoy. Im having a problem with dancing and I dont know if its the music and want to know if anybody else has experienced this. When im dancing im constantly thinking of my next move instead of letting the music guide me . Its making me crazy. I dont flow into my moves like all the other girls. I had wrote a similar post a few months back but im still not seeing much of a difference in my performance. . I want to know if anybody can help me here. The other girls just dance slow and sexy . Do you think I just need to pic a different type of music for myself?

Is there a difference between the music you think is good for dancing vs. the music that moves you when you're sitting and home and gives you goosebumps?

Experiment, June. Listen to music at home. The music that makes you slip away and forget where you are is the music you should dance to. The music where you FEEL the beat, versus the music where you think you SHOULD feel the beat.

    Does that make sense?

Maybe if you want to dance slow & sexy, pick slow & sexy music? Hip hop usually has a quicker beat.

ahhh, sweetie, THAT is the difference between hip-hop and music like trance and house. With hip-hop, you have to "think" your way through the music, because it has no vibe or energy. trance and house grabs the soul and the body follows. as a club DJ, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

That's what I'm talking about, Scorpio. Of course, I have seen some dancers who just can't feel a beat and will sort of meander around the stage aimlessly...which is something that drives me nuts, for some reason.

Regardless - June - if the music "you like" is not the music you dance the best to, then experiment around in your living room with other kinds. Or ask the DJ for a CD with a selection....I'm sure he'd make something for you. Take it home...plug it in...see what you can move to the best.

I think that maybe you just need a little more time; dancing on stage naturally is something that takes some practice. Don't sweat it. Dance to what you like and you'll eventually get into the groove.

    LOL BigGrn.

Junel, I found that when I am "stressed" out, I just cannot seem to get into the music. Are you thinking about how much money you need to make that night? Or are you thinking about how annoyed you are with that one guy sitting at the stage and being rude to you? The most important thing to do on-stage is lose your mind. You need to let all of the thoughts go and just dance. If you are not doing this on-stage, then you will not do this at home. Once you turn on some music at home and start "letting go", you will learn how to turn off the "banter" that we all deal with throughout the day. Once you can turn off the banter (or at least turn it down) you will find that you'll hear the music and flow with it more than before.

The other thing is I think that you are so focused on not looking "robotic" and flowing into the moves, that you are actually causing yourself to do just that. Let go...enjoy the music and the moves will follow.

    Hope that helps a bit.

I listen to r&b/hip hop at home, in the car etc...along with other types of music. For some reason I can not dance to it at work. Unless it's something I've practiced at home. My body can move to it cleaning my apartment, but not on stage. Definately experiment at home. Flip through your radio stations or cd's and see what makes you feel sexy. It sucks sometimes because I'll love a song but there's no way I can make it work for me. Although I already developed my style which is a major factor.

I tend to agree, and with a large number of dancers this works very well. There is a lot of rap which does have a good beat, but a whole lot more of it which may be catchy to listen to in your car, but is actually discordant onstage, compared to old-school rap, some of the better techno, or something slower and more sensuous. "Milkshake" is a good example of this--it's catchy and the girls that like it might dance well to it, but it isn't smooth, and doesn't flow easily.

The bottom line is, there's very little "rhythm" in most of what is called "R & B" today.

Though there are some, like my girlfriend, who have heard too much bad house (like that sappy "Castles in the Sky" for instance), and are turned off to it in spite of my best efforts. She still likes some good breakbeat techno, like Baby Anne, and also rock-oriented techno like Crystal Method or Prodigy. But she still does best with hard rock, and that's what she gets when I pick it for her.

The problem you may run into is that some clubs are not allowed to play the slower stuff, which is what it sounds like you need--or so it seems. I would advise trying a wide variety of music at home and trying to dance to it and see what works best. You might also try paying some attention during your lap dances and see if there is something that feels easier to work with.

If you want to try some slower more sensuous songs, check out Enigma or Delerium, perhaps. They tend to be slow, but still have power, and you want that, trust me...

A much bigger problem, and one that is all too common, is that the typical stripclub DJ has all the sensitivity of a small rodent when it comes to matching the music to the dancer.

This is the case with the DJ at the club my girlfriend just left. In spite of being so smitten with her that he actually called her 4 times in one day until she finally called him back to see if there was some disaster at the club (I knew exactly what he wanted), he still had no clue what to play for her after 4 months. And this was a guy with almost 20 years experience, who of course thought he was God's Gift to stripclubs.

Check out the "Music Mix" section of this forum for all kinds of excellent advice.

Keith Sweat songs never fails to slow my dancing down a couple of notches. Try: "Nobody"

June - you're being awfully quiet. Do you have any input? Can you tell us what kinds of music move you that are relatively mainstream (but not in the hip-hop category?) ?

I also prefer hip hop and it's what I listen to mostly in my personal life. But I've learned that dancing to it at work is a bad idea. Not only is it hard to dance slowly to it, but most of the customers at my clubs hate it anyway (90% of my customers are older white guys). I had to realize that I'm not there to party, I'm there to make the most money that I can, so I need to play what's gonna make me the most money. More and more I dance to '70s and '80s stuff. It was kinda hard to get into it at first, but now I know the songs well so it's easier to move to them (also I know the "accents" in the music, so I can throw in some accents in my dancing as well. Do you know what I mean?). Some of the stuff that works well for me (and that my customers like, which really does bring me more stage tips): David Bowie, Queen, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, The Cars, Journey, Marvin Gaye (especially him!), The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, etc. Maybe your club's clientelle is totally different, but this kind of music works very well for me. Also you should check out some older soul and funk, because a lot of current hip hop samples stuff from older songs so you can kind of get the best of both worlds.

in the sfactor book, sheila kelley talks about finding the "wave" of the music to dance to. not the bass line or whatever it is that makes you feel like doing a high energy fast dance routine, but the underlining feel and movement of the song(s). something like that.

Hi. We aren't allowed to play slower stuff until it's time for "Ultimate Table Dances" at the end of the night....I listen to so many kinds of music, it's weird.
I have found that songs that I normally turn off/down are good for dancing.
surpise-surprise, THE STRAY CAT STRUT is one of my all time money making songs that I hate to hear anywhere else.
and would i have ever guessed that MANEATER by HALL & OATES was a money makin' song for me....that's my dad's music! not mine!
but, hey, whatever gets me paid, I don't care....I can dance to it & the dudes love it.
    Also, HAPPY by ASHANTI
and COLD BLOODED by BUSTA RHYMES
and SANDSTORM by DARUDE fucking rocks.

ha, there are my two cents...more like five.

If my girl lily is having an off night on stage she gets me to play, something like bloodhound gang bad touch or longbeach dub allstars kablammin it. she just lets go and does something crazy not caring what the toddlers at the stage are doing, or the fight her boyfriend has. it helps relax her and get in the groove.
