    Default Ugh...I have mono.

Has anyone else had the pleasure of contracting this fine virus, and how long did it take you to get better? I've been told not to exert myself because of the swelling of the spleen, so I guess I'm condemned to weeks of watching Springer and eating Haagen Daz

I had it my senior year in high school. I missed the first month and a half of school. All I did was sleep. It's severity differs for each person. My best friend had it after me and was only out of school two weeks. Hope you feel better soon. They also call it the "Kissing Disease." So, how did you get it!

I hope you feel better too mami! I once told my boss I had mono because I was missing work, but I never really had it. Oddly enough, my boyfriend at the time and my best girl friend and her BF all got it.

I was the only one unscathed.....

I was 12 when I got mono. I missed at least 3 weeks of school. Ironically, my mom took me to the doc (naval hospital) and they tested me for mono but it came back negative. So they put me on amoxicillin. The next day I woke up with spots all over my face, neck and chest and it kept creeping downward. They tested me for mono again. This time positive. Apparently people with mono break out in a spotty rash if they take amoxicillin (at least that's what they said)

I remember being very tired and sleeping alot as well. Plus my throat was sore and it hurt to swallow.

The daughter of one of my housecall clients just got over it...lasted 4 weeks.

    Best wishes.

I had it when I was 19 and let me tell you it sucked. My doc told me I couldn't go to school or work. I missed my last two months of that semester in college. I begged him to let me go to summer school. I couldn't work for 4 months. I was tired all of the time too. I did nothing but sleep and drink grape juice (the only thing I ate/drank for a month). When I did start back to school, I would go to summer school at college for two hours and then have to come home and sleep for two hours.

I developed very bad sores all in my throat and ear canals. They had to put me on prednisone twice. I woke up one night and my throat was so swollen I couldn't breathe or call for my parents. I thought I was going to die and they would wake up in the morning and find me. I still get sore ears now and then, but never before I had mono.

My sister got it and it affected her spleen and liver more. She had a very high fever one night and they had to bring her to the ER. Hers only lasted about one month.

I'm so sorry to hear that you have it. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. It sucks!!!

Yep. Eight weeks. Sucked. I was 15 and my boyfriend got it too.. we used to talk on the phone and sometimes we'd fall asleep on eachother over the phone.

I've never had it before, but my boyfriend had it pretty bad when he was in high school, had a high fever and was sick for a good while.

Had it my first year in college! My mother cured it homeopathically after I scraped my carcass on a train to get to her feeling like I was dying the day after my diagnosis. I was only out of commisssion for 2 weeks. I'm not a huge believer in homeopathy, but I really believed she cured it that way! The agonizing throat pain and swollen glands went away within hours of her administering the remedy.

Adina, I'll email you tomorrow or Wed to see how you're doing, since I figure you're not up for phone convo since your throat might be hurting. Take care hun, and drink lots of Throat Coat tea with Slippery Elm to ease the sore throat.

Thanks, everyone, for the well-wishes and relating your story. It appears that my case is pretty mild compared to some of you, so I feel a whole lot less sorry for myself than I did before. Thank you for the perspective! I'm drinking 2 EmergenCs a day, plus Echinacea and Cold Eeze lozenges. The swelling in my throat and lymph nodes has gone down, but the swelling of the spleen makes it difficult to find a comfortable position to sleep in. That's the worst part.

I got mono back when I was 10. About 2 years ago I was dignosed with Epstein Barr virus which is from the same mono type of virus.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

If the swelling in your spleen is that pronounced it might be time to go for a follow-up doctor's appointment. Do not exert yourself at all, even if you have a few moments where you feel up to it! It's normal for the spleen to swell from mono, but if it's that noticeable, bring it up to your doc.

Yup, here too. I'm going in to get tested for Epstein Barr next week.
