Default Dead Can Dance

I was in chat earlier and some members, Polecat being one, were discussing the group Dead Can Dance. This reminded me of my long ago abandoned quest to rediscover a track I had heard by them. I forget where and when it was, but I remember being distinctly impressed by what I had heard.

I wound up buying three of their CDs, but they were all so disappointing I traded them back in immediately. They were just wierd, not very danceable, and not at all what I had remembered the group sounding like. So I kind of forgot them until now.

I have always been on the lookout for slow and sensuous music with distinction, especially with an exotic or haunting feel to it, or a bit of techno influence. This kind of stuff works so well for the right kind of dancer, and while I love songs like Paula Cole's "Feelin' Love" or "Sadness" by Enigma, I want more unusual songs that will capture the audience's attention and inspire the dancer to new heights.

So, Polecat, or anyone else out there, will you please tell me the name of a good Dead Can dance CD, Song, or any other similar type of music?

The only one I am familiar with is "Severance". I actually heard it as a cover by the goth group Bauhaus, who reformed earlier this decade and covered it at their live gigs. It is a beautiful and haunting song. Also came accross this link at Amazon:

Thanks, you guys! I will definitely check these out.

Polecat, I hope you post some of those songs you were mentioning last night, whether or not they are Dead Can Dance.

Yup, Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove is probably "the" song you're looking for. personally, i think it's slower than christ and is a complete roomkiller unless the girl knows EXACTLY what she is doing. and even then, it's a we-just-opened or a last-song-of-the-night thing.

dead can dance are brilliant though, and the album that song is on is quite good. for my naughty purposes, i prefer "the serpent's egg". a great deal of their stuff tends to be chanting with random bells and hammer dulcimers and the like. if anyone is really into this stuff though, also check out the solo cd's by the two main members, lisa gerrard and brendan perry.

DCD is huge in the tribal bellydance community. I like to use them or Muslimgauze when I do outdoor shows, or anything more earthy, or with swords.

I also recommend Solace, they do a similar tribal style. NONE of this stuff is good for the SC!

We were all over the map wildly with music discussion the other night in chat, Djoser. Most of it not really too related to DCD as we moved off that a bit early.

We were talking groovin' beat, middle-eastern kinda digs.. and started talking about 'Bollywood' pimp era 70's mishmashed with Indian flavor- Bombay the Hardway- Guns, Cars and Sitars, which is a really cool cd. Later into Massive Attack, Mezzanine, which fits your slow/sensuous with a haunting feel.

Sheesh, we were all over the place.. also discussed the band Sugarplant (import cds, slower, redundant but interesting), Hooverphonic, some William Orbit, Bjork, Portishead, etc.etc.

I still find my favorite music is from local talent hitting the many SF clubs. The scene here is pretty diverse and there are some extremely talented people hitting the bars out here.

Delerium is my favorite slower, sensual music, though it depends on the dancer if I am working, of course. I actually saw them perform in detroit, which was great except the club wasn't quite right for them.

If Conjure One is anything like them I'll be very glad to get them, too--thanks for the tip!

conjure one is quite good, yes. it's rhys fulber, formerly of delerium/frontline assembly/intermix/will etc etc. similar to delerium in many ways, with female vocals from the likes of poe and sinead o'connor. there are also excellent remixes available of a few of them for club play, check 'em out!
