    Default Random web site question

My knowledge of computers and the internet is moderate at best. I have question that i hope someone with more computer/ internet knowledge can answer. I feel a little stupid asking this because i feel that it may be a fairly obvious answer.

While visiting random web sites; not logging on or signing in, but just visting to look around; can these sites see or obtain your IP address? None porn sites.

    Thanks

There are ways of masking IP's, but it can be a bit difficult.

You cannot (that I am aware of) get a personal computer's IP address from an email, but you can typically look at "header" information and figure out where the email was sent through. That ISP would then be able to (with a court order, typically) track down the user's IP address using that info.

Neither really. I was thinking yesterday about a site of an ex I use to visit A LOT, and thought how embarrassing it would be for him to see how often it was that i visited. It wasn't his site but I sill don't know ifit's somthing he would have seen or not.

Well....he might be able to look and see that someone from aol.com or whatever went to it. It's not quite that easy to figure out if someone specific was on your site, unless their ISP is something weird and recognizeable. I wouldn't be overly concerned about it.

Ok. thanks so much. that did occur to me, also. I had to wipe out everyting in my computer, put in a clean installation of windows 98 (I know pretty ancient) and reconnect to the internet a few months back, so I'm sure this made a difference.

Thank you for being so helpful.

Don't worry about sending emails. You do NOT send them from your computer in most cases. You send them to the mailserver and the MAILSERVER forewards them. It's possible to get your personal IP from the mailserver, but no-one is going to go through the hassle to get it when it just doesn't really mean anything.

Now, the FBI and shit can get your IP from an email by contacting Hotmail or whatever mailservice you use. This is one way they catch kiddie porn dickheads.

You can't really block your IP from appearing to a webmaster, but you can make it hard for him or her to see it. You can Mask it or Spoof someone elses, but this is usually blackhat hacker bullshit and it's not fullproof, but rather FOOLproof.

Look, so someone sees your IP, it's not a big deal. The closest they can get to finding YOU is the city or area you live in. It's not like your house number goes along with it. I send mine from Saint Louis Missouri, so what if someone gets that?

yeah, after reading this thread, I was wondering how detailed of a location an IP address can indicate.

    Try this out:
    http://www.showmyip.com/geo/

Not too accurate, but it got the city right . It located my IP addy about 10 miles away from my actual office location.

Yes you can, all emails contain the orginating IP address of the client and the ip address of the SMTP server. Unless you are the hacking guru...... under outlook, you can look at View/Options and see all of the header information.

Yes, every email has the originating IP address right in the message. A "Show All headers" will have that as the first originating point.

This only applies to using mail clients like Netscape or Outlook. If you use web-based mail like Yahoo or Hotmail and use their webpage to compose/send mail, your IP is not included in the email, but instead an ID code. The receiver would have to email yahoo/hotmail and have them convert that code to the IP so you're at least somewhat protected if you use any web-based email client.

As far as websurfing, the site itself will have your IP address in a log somewhere, but believe me- they really don't care. They have massive logs of 1000's of IPs daily and only usually look at these for stats (semi-anonymous, like "40% of our hits came from Texas!" kinds of graphs) or if there is a problem/inquiry.
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess what I was thinking was that by knowing someones IP address youcould find out personal information. Its also a matter of privacy; although I find the ability to do these things on a computer very intriguing; but not for illegal purposes. At least, having nothing to do with children, privacy of people in society, or if it were to cause harm. but other then that...

    Two things.
First, the header information typically does not contain your personal IP address, but rather those IP addresses that involve relay points, such as your ISP.

Second, the IP Locator links above are locating your ISP....not you. When I am at work, for example, I am going through a large network that connects through New Jersey. I'm in Ohio. Any site that I hit, therefore, "thinks" I am in New Jersey.
