Default Laughing at Exotic Dance Industry

I just wanted to share this with the board and see if anyone had similar experiances. I am in a Pubic speaking course for college and we all had to share our topic ideas with the class for the semester. This topic will work for both an informative and a persuasive speech. When it was my turn to state the topics i was pondering.... i said "gender stereotypes, religion tolerance.... and finally the "Exotic Dance Industry"... Well i may as well haveb brough in a comedians videotape or something because the whole class just started laughing... I don't mean a few chuckles.... but roaring laughter...The teacher really didnt say much but i said ok i think ill just go with gender stereotypes....(hint of sarcasm as i said it). Anyway i thought this presentation was a nice change of topic because alot of people picked topics such as disease,,, smoking ect. It would have also been a good chance to shed light on dancers and our stereotypes. Then at the end some guy laughed and said.." Oh i would like to have heard the point of action for the exotic topic) The point of action is the part of the speech where we set a little controvery. Anyway, I'm not upset or embarrased.... just a little puzzled,,,. It's ashame how people are so quick to judge...

Yeah, I'm in a women's studies course and feel the same way. Man, if the teacher wasn't such a bitch and I wasn't sure I'd fail, I'd write my paper on it.

People laugh about anything sexually related in a group. Its the way they hide if they are ashamed, or most likely, turned-on......

My store's in a 'tony' part of Vancouver (BC) and I always get someone walking in with the poor attitude that Exotic Dancers are below 'human-level'. Well, those people, I always tell them that I believe all people have a right to lead their (own) lives in the way they choose. That by continuing to say things like that simply continues the prejudices that their narrow-minded social group wallows in.

Discrimination is so easy when it's based upon insecurities!

Nobody laughs at the pro-athlete making millions and millions more endorsing some 'sports drink'. All this based on that person's physical attributes.

The irony is that Dancers don't go around saying things like that about others. Like the coporate lawyer who successfully defended an insurance company from being sued by some poor family that just lost their child to a Doctor's negligence. Those people don't say a peep.

Heh...takes me back to my college speech class...demonstration speech - one of the gals in the class approached me and said "I need your help....just sit in this chair in the front." She loaded up her boom box, turned it on, and broke into an exotic striptease, complete with lap grinding and neck nibbling. This was my very first strip dance experience. I have no idea what grade she got.....I would have given her an "A".

Reactions were mixed....and one woman came up to me and told me how terrible it was that I had to "go through" that. Uh....yeah...terrible....see this bulge in my pants? goofy stuck up prudish wench

In a woman's studies class I heard, "prostitues, drug addicts, strippers and other forms of lower class people......." I was livid and stood up to say how can we be lower class when we get to decide how we are treated? Grrrrrr..... I also said that look at waitresses who can actually get spit upon and have to take it! A dancer can be rude to any customer and walk away at any time without being fired.. who's the lower class then?

We psychology students refer to that as a freudian slip.

Thhe teacher said something like, "Well, yes... hmmmm, anyway" and promptly chaged the topic. No one wanted to touch on it, porobably because I looked so pissed off.
Another time so one put up a flier about consumerism or something oflike and the flier said "75% of all exotic dancers were a beauty pageant contestant" And at the body it says a study was done on it. Well, I asked on the classes chat forum who would write something so stupid and where they got their sources. I went on to say that I knew quite a few dancers and not one of them had been in a pageant so what kind of studies had been done. No one wrote back.
I also found out a little later that the writer WAS someone in my class, a self-proclaimed liberalist that talked too much and always had an opinion, but obviously didn't have the nerve to tell me who she was on the forum or where she got her numbers.
Hoes to say that people will talk and talk but most of the time they are just giving their own opinions about something they know nothing about.

I think the laughter was mainly from the term "Exotic Dance Industry" and not the job itself. I see the same response from less-progressive minded individuals. They find that title, for some reason, hilarious or funny.

It's reckoned the same as a janitor labeled a 'Facility Sanitization Engineer' or a garbage person a 'Waste Disposal Agent'... when someone asks a friend what she does for a living, "Exotic Dancer" is often times laughed in return with, "You mean a stripper in a titty bar?"

A lot of people don't take the job seriously- especially given media representation. Even TV representation is usually Al Bundy staring up at a pair of legs, chanting "Hooters!" Compound this with a title most people won't associate with the job (i.e. "Exotic Dancing" they think of as like belly dancing or some other kind of clothed dance), and you get the double whammy.

    Lastly-

Wow... and I mean just... wow.... Talk about the epitome of being narrow-minded.. across the boards.

There are high-end escorts building wonderful lives for themselves, white-collar/business exec's in major Fortune-500's with drug addictions, and of course, strippers/dancers that are independent and empowered. It's absolutely baffling how the attachment of 'lower class' would be wide-stroke painted across an entire set of people like that. They might as well thrown a few races in there too in order to complete the prejudice/stereotyping.
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.

That's too bad. I wrote a paper on stripping several years back. Of course the professor was just enthralled with the whole industry. I think she was even friends with a porn actress.

Silky I say go for the exotic dance persuasive speech! I think you'll have fun with it. Will you be using visual aids?

When I did my informative speech I chose some adult bookstore freedom of speech case.

All the people who laughed were probably "closet strip club visitors" and "stripper wannabes"
Gimme a break. Whats so funny? I would have thought it was a great idea.
I think you should do it. I bet EVERYONE will be listening.

Last semester when I did my topics, I always chose something that I KNEW the class would listen to. And they did. So go for it. See how you do.

Laughter is often used as a defense mechanism. When people are intimidated and unsure how to react in a "socially acceptable" manner, they laugh.

Yeah, I could never get away with it. She's a totally crazed lunatic who only hears what she wants to.
We actually had a discussion about how women are sold into porn today. She would not listen at all to any other side of the story. I almost started yelling that I do it and I would know!! Of course if I did that, 300 people would know about it and she'd probably tell me that I was being bought and sold but I was blind to it all.
