If you want temporary hair for just work or going out, there are some great clip-on ponytail styles out there. Revlon makes some pretty good ones that aren't expensive.
If you want extensions that are gonna stay on your hair all the time, go for gold and get Great Lengths extensions. It's all natural hair and looks amazing. Every person I've seen who has them looks great. They look incredibly natural and last a long time. Jessica Simpson and some other celebrities have them.
They are expensive. Application costs about $1,000+. But if you want the best, that's the way to go.

I have Great Lengths extensions and LOVE them!!! They are real human hair bonded to your own hair and do not damage your hair when you remove them. You can find a certified stylist in your area by going to greatlengths.net. I pay $1200 for mine and they last me from 3-4 months. The extension is attached to a root of your hair, so it depends on how fast your hair grows. But beleive me it is worth the money!!! Hands down it is the best hair extension I have ever used!!!

There are pros and cons of each kind of extensions. I think I've tried them all. One thing to keep in mind is how fast your natural hair grows and how often you wash your hair.
My first extension experience was using weft hair because it was the cheapest. Weft hair is a long piece of hair that can be cut into sections and then wrapped horizontally around the head and either glued or sewn into place. I had two horizontal 8 inch cornrows at the nape of my neck, and then the 22 inch long extensions were sewn into the cornrow. My own hair was long enough to blend in on the sides, so it looked OK. However, I couldn't pull it up into a ponytail, or wear an up-do without having a big bump where the 2 cornrows were.
Total cost was $80 for the hair and $40 for my co-worker to sew it in. However, 8 weeks later my own hair had grown an inch and I had a dreadlocked, smelly cornrow with 8 inch sections of weft hair sewn into it. It took 2 hours for my husband to cut the thread, unsew the remaining nappy extensions, and try to brush out the knotted dreadlocked cornrow. I pretty much lost 75% of my natural hair that was in the cornrow.
Great Lengths takes loose hair and uses a protein/glue mix to bind a lock of hair about 1/4 inch from your scalp. It looks great, lasts the longest, but it is also the most damaging to your own hair. I have personally seen more than 5 co-workers RUIN their hair with Great Lengths, so I never tried it. Jennifer Aniston used GL in the movie Rock Star, and if you remember correctly had to sport a short bob cut after she took them out.
This is the issue: the product used to attach the bonds to the hair is a mixture of 1 %protein and 99% glue. This can be good if want to a. make those extensions last 4-6 months and b. keep getting the new extentions for a long period of time (like 5-10 years)
The glue is strong, and the bonds do not break, so you don't have to worry about loosing any of your extensions. But, consider this, as your hair grows out, the bonds are further away from your scalp. As your natural hair grows in it needs to not only be colored, but BRUSHED to avoid dread locking.
Now suppose your dancing career ends, and want to have them taken out... it's next to IMPOSSIBLE. The glue actually binds to your hair and can only be removed with Great Lengths chemical remover product. Well...lets just say that a chemical strong enough to desolve that glue is certainly powerful enough to dissolve your hair too...and the bonds are placed just 1/4 inch from your scalp. Yep, the Sinead O'Connor look. Jennifer Aniston was lucky, but she still had to cut her natural hair short post- Great Lengths.
I found a product called cinderella hair. Check them out at www.cinderellahair.com The bonding agent is 100% protein. I compare it to the consistency of candle wax, my stylist uses the heating tool to melt the end of the extension, and then rolls it between her fingers.
The pro to this is that the lock of hair can literally slide right off without damaging my hair. The con is that they do slide off and need to be replaced every 6-8 weeks.
However, I've found cinderella hair to be the best choice for me for several reasons. First, I like to wash my hair everynight that I work because I can't stand cigarette smoke. With the other methods, I constantly got dreadlocks in my new-growth. Also, the hair extension itself is dead hair....meaning vitamin E and a good diet don't make it shiny and healthy. I found that after 6-8 weeks, I DIDN'T want the same hair because it had lost it's luster.
Prices for GL and CH are similar: 1500-2000 in major cities. I paid 1500 for the initial application. Every 6-8 weeks it's about 200 for the hair plus 250 for my stylist to do the color touch-up and put the replacement hair in.
Pricey, eh?

I have heard about the GL and EL and CH, but noone in this area does them and they are way too pricey for me to worry about. They seam like they would work really well though.

What is euro-loc and how is it applied and where do you buy the hair?

Euro Loc is similar to GL and CH in the sense that you attach each individual lock of the hair individually. Instead of glue or protein, it is attached using small metal clasps. It's not damaging to the hair, although you will get lots of little dents in your hair if you take them out (the same way a barrette leaves a dent) Katrine, do you have problems with your real hair snagging or tangling as it grows out?
Since it is trademarked, you will have to get it through the stylist. GL and CH are the same way: you have to be a licensed cosmetologist who has gone through their training before they will sell ANY of their products to you at cost.
Keep in mind, if anyone is a licensed cosmetologist, you can make a KILLING doing this. Both the GL and CH extensions at cost are only about 4-500 for the hair. The remaining grand or so goes straight into the stylist's pocket.
I lucked out because I've sent all my co-workers to my stylist, so she just charges me cost for the hair, plus the going rate for cut and color when she puts them in.
If you like to curl or straighten your hair, then stay away from pro-fiber or synthetic hair...it will melt if you touch it with a curling or flat iron....yep....been there....done that....

I've had Euroloc about a month now and have had no problems with tangling. The only weird thing is once I washed the hair it became wavy and I have straight hair! This is actually pretty cool because I can now actually have wavy hair and it looks good, I just wrap my own hairs begind my ears.
I didn't know much about how to use straightening balm and a flat iron at first and it was frizzy for a few days (remember Brig LOL!) but now have it down with a product from B&BW and a ceramic straightener.
I love it and its been great for earnings and has also added to my bellydance shows because now I can do the Saudi hair throwing and not worry about a fall coming off!
Next step tonight; coloring my roots around the ring-locs, wish me luck!

Katrine's hair looks AWESOME!! I say go with Eurolock...it feels great too....allot of extensions feel gross but her's don't... LOVE it!

Just wanted to give a few tips if yo do the weave style of extension:
1. Before you wash your hair, make sure you brush it out and get the knots out first.
2. Do not get water ( and shampoo) all the way to your scalp where the wefts are (water mixed with shampoo and conditioner is what gives you the smelly, moldy dreadlock by the time you take them out).
3. When you condition, do as above and skip the weft. Let the water run down the hair. Get any remaining water out by pulling the hair downward (start at the neck and pull firmly but lightly down to the end).
4. Do not put your wet hair up on your head in a knot, it will tangle.
5. When drying, put the hair all to one side and "roll" it with the towel, then take a large tooth comb and (starting from the bottom working section by section), comb the hair out.
6. When drying with a blow dryer, section the hair off so that you can get up to the weft dry.
I just got hair extensions! They are awesome. I used great lengths which are the best..no glue..bonded with kerotin. I wish I knew how to upload a picture so you all could see.

Hi,I used to have extensions a long time ago, human hair attached micro-weave style to roots usung wax.It looked great, and was very long, down to my waist or sometimes longer. What I did was put the extensions in by number of pieces, something like 45 the first time, and then go in about every couple of months and put in about 15 extra ones.It looked really good. It's 100% human hair so you can style it any way you wish, just do not use products containing oil including shampoo/conditioner since it can make them slip off too soon.I found that having too many extensions in weighed the hair down and gave me a headache, and even ripped some of my own hair out.It was also harder to wash it and brush it.When you have them in,you should always have the hair in a ponytail or a braid while washing it to have less impact on the roots. That way your own hair grows out longer and without damage while having them in.It also takes a couple of days getting used to sleeping with them.So they definitely require maintenance, but are fun to have!

A cheap but non-damaging extension is EZ weft
http://www.bellabeautysupply.net/771019.html
it takes 20 minutes to install and 10 to take off.
it is held on by tiny clasps.
if you know the right person to put it on it can be very cheap.
I don't know how widely it is used and the quality is definitely not top of the line.
But if you only want it for a week or two it's perfect.

i would personally never get clip ons unless it was for a photoshoot. i am much too paranoid when it comes to hair falling out after an incident i had. i was about 18 years old...i had gotten my first hair extensions, and instead of getting a "weave" i got tracks GLUED in my hair. (keep in mind, i did not get "fusions,") anyway, i was dancing in this club and a hot guy approached, and i tried to look all cute playing with my hair while i was dancing and such. well...i took my hand away from my head, and noticed my TRACK WAS STARTING TO COME OUT. i quickly rushed to the bathroom and that was that. luckily, this did not happen at work lol.
anyhow, i then started to get tracks SEWN in my head. i mainly wanted more body, not really length since my hair is already 3/4 of the way down my back. i reallly really really liked them. i had to get them done about once every 3 weeks, though. some of the downfalls included my scalp itching, dandruff from scratching and not being able to wash right where the tracks were sewn, and sometimes it would be a ratty mess right before i got new ones in. also, my hair started to come out from constantly being pulled back into cornrows for the tracks to be sewn onto. however, your hair might be stronger. it depends on the individual.
i stopped getting extensions altogether until about 8 months ago. i had been trying to get platinum highlights, but my hair just broke since it's so dark. i now get "fusions." basically, i get highlights "fused" (or maybe infused..i dunno) into my hair. little strands get glued onto strands of my real hair. fusions are my favorite. i get them done about once every 3-4 months and they dont really pull on my hair since the strands are so small. i get about 12 highlights for $100. the price depends on where you get them done, though.
i would NOT recommend synthetic hair. yes, it's cheaper, but...eh..haven't heard good things about it...
I just got great lengths last week. I did a lot of research before I made my choice. Great Lengths was the best by far. i have thin hair and now it is thick and shiny. I do not know of anyone whose hair was ruined by this method.
I would gladly upoad my pics but I don't know how!

don't waste your money! I had them done twice and both times only lasted for a week before they started falling out! I thought they were the biggest pain in the ass! Plus, after you do take them out, you have hunks of the glue left in your hair for a couple weeks.
I believe that I posted this before while the board was acting funny...
Go to haircandy.net. You can find stylist all over the U.S. as well as how to do different kinds of extensions yourself (or have your friends or man do it) for no more than the cost of the hair and materials.
