Default Offtopic: More pleasant request for advice re: Linux on an old IBM Thinkpad 380E

I have an old IBM Thinkpad 380E, and have played around with Linux, on and off, on an old desktop, for about three years. Specs on this old warhorse notebook are 150MHz MMX Pentium I and 48 megs of RAM with a 2-gig harddrive. Any suggestions as to which Linux might run the best on this old hardware? So far, my best luck is with SuSE 7.3, but have not been able to get my external modem to work. Sound is okay, though. Thanks!

Btw, here are a couple of links for small versions of Linux of around 50-75 megs which will boot from a burned CD without altering your harddrive, and I think both of these can also be booted from a USB flash drive, if your hardware is sufficiently modern. But they take almost 128 MB or so in the USB version, or at least that seemed to be true of feather for me on my newer notebook.

You could look at gentoo. You can really customize that cut out the useless stuff.

It ain't for the weak of stomach though, I can tell you that! You answer about a zillion questions and compile EVERYTHING from source.
