    Default knee problems??

Usually, my knees are sore after a shift, and I usually pay little attention because I figured as long as there's no swelling or pain with regular movements, it was simply an occupational hazard. However, after my Wed night shift, my knees were more tender than usual. When I woke up Thurs morning, my left knee had swollen up to the size of a baseball. There is what feels like, a water balloon over my kneecap, and kneeling is absolutely impossible. I asked my physical therapist about it and she said it was probably bursitis, and that I needed to get it drained... Anyway, I did some research and it sounds like it can be a chronic problem with people who work on their knees as well as athletes- dancers included. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Did you have to take a prolonged period of time off? I've had to miss the last two nights because dancing is next to impossible, but I can't afford to be out of commission very long

Never had this happen, but I do have an old injury to one of my knees. You're going to need to start finding 1) a new way of dancing (using as little kneeling as possible or 2) a new job where there is no stress to your knees whatsoever.

I believe that there are joint remedies out there that can help you. I would suggest PM'ing Farrah_Holiday.

I think that as long as you take really good care of your knees, you should be able to get back in the grind pretty quickly (usually after having the knee drained, they'll make you wait a week). Anyways...it's always better to follow doctors orders...

Yup! Swear by it. I noticed a huge difference the last couple of months that I worked by taking glucosomine.

I agree with Venus - try and stay off of them as much as you can. Our stages had padded edges that we could kneel on - that helped. Also, I just plain avoided getting on my hands and knees on stage or any other position that involved my knees - somehow, if I did that, my night was ruined. When I was not working, I also was sure to not wear high heels at all. I also swear by Nike - Shocks. They are so comfortable. I know that they are expensive but I buy them online and I can wear a kids size so they are a lot cheaper. Save your high heel wearing for work.

While I was still working with ballet companies I had this problem in my knee and one of my feet, I have had them drained numerous times. It was immediate relief but not a perm. problem solver.

What did help was to strengthen the surrounding muscles. That way the problem area has help in absorbing the shock and aids in making movement easier for the problem area.

What you DON'T want to do is just numb the pain. The pain and swelling are there for a reason. Numbing it will not make the problem go away and in fact will usually make it worse because damge just continues instaed of healing.

I have pretty strong legs because I have been a long distance runner for years. However, maybe I need to add some more strength training to my routine.

How on earth do I stay OFF my knees? I guess I will have to experiment in other ways when taking tips on stage. The stage seems to be set up so that you pretty much have to get on your knees. Maybe an airline pillow underneath will help...

One thing I'd do is quite running ! Every Dr. I have seen said while it's great cardio, it is hell on the knee and back joints.

    I'd switch to walking asap

^ Agreed. Some of that swelling may be from your running (damages cartilidge) and the stage dancing just aggravates the area. It's awkward doing "no knees" dancing, but it is possible, as I've done it for quite a while. You really have to focus your attention on WHAT you are doing. Slide down the pole, do some floor work on your back, then roll over and do something sexy, collect your tips...whatever...just don't put direct pressure on your KNEE CAPS. It's hard at first...but once you get used to it...you wonder what the hell you were doing at first!!

I agree with Tigerlilly that running would be a terrible thing to continue. I'd also suggest an elliptical machine for cardio...personally, I haven't had any knee pain after a workout on one of those. Great exercise too. There is a proper form, however, so ask someone who works at the gym for advice if needed. Good luck!

As far as staying off your knees goes, I try to stay off mine as much as possible because in my first week my knees were absolutely COVERED in bruises due to how much time I spent on them.

What I usually do when I do floorwork and am wearing the clear plastic shoes (you can do this with other shoes too but it doesn't work as well on our stage) is lie on my stomach and slide around with the front of the shoe on the floor instead of sliding on my knees. Our stage is made of a teflon-like substance that is easy to slide around on, and the combinaton of the stage and the plastic makes it easy to slide around. I extend my legs behind me, spread my legs, lift them up and down, maybe go onto my knees a little bit but keep my weight on my hands or stomach and the front of the shoe. I don't know if this makes any sense but it looks really cool.

if the knee trouble is from floorwork on stage then I know this sounds dorky but knee pads might be the only thing that would save your knees during a set or just staying away from the particular movements that bug your knees

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I know one dancer who wears a wrap around one of her knees, but she tries to conceal it as much as possible by wearing thigh high boots.

I do. I also use arnica after I dance or whenever my knees hurt.

I've heard about glucosamine before, so I went out and got some today. My mom has used it (with great results) for a hip injury. I've also heard of arnica before- isn't it a homeopathic med?

I didn't even THINK of thigh high boots. That's a great idea to hide a knee brace ( which, apparently is a good idea according to my PT.)

I haven't been running a lot lately... and I've never had knee problems before, however, I know it's very high impact and it does a number on your joints. I guess the dr. will be able to help me out tommorow with some suggestions. Thanks all for the advice- very helpful!

i have really bad knees, so i know how you feel. i take flex seed oil pills daily bc it helps your joints. also i use arnica gel to get rid of bruises. it is also a good idea to ice your knees after a long shift and massage your thighs bc the tightness can pull on your patellar tendon causing pain.

what is that other stuff you gals have mentioned? do you need you get a prescription for it?

If you're refering to glucosamine/chondroitin it's a suppliment availabale in any vitamin isle. I've been taking it on and off for years now (I have osteoarthritis).

Yeah floorwork definatly does a number on your knees! Not only floorwork but wearing high heel shoes for an extended period of time. The only problem I had with my knees is a little soreness and bruising.

I never knew about the glucosamine stuff! Why didn't anybody tell me this when I danced? :o

I've used the glucosomine/chron. supplements and urge girls to try it. I noticed a huge difference. Stretching every hour or so helps too... When I forget these two things my knees go back to sounding and feeling like there's a grinder in there whenever I bend 'em. Does anyone else have this problem? Sometimes it can feel like somethings really damaged in there....

Yes, I have heard of glucosamine but I have never tried it. My joints (ankles, knees) are always popping. But I think the knee soreness that you are experiencing may be from the years of running? I prefer speed walking. Also, about the knee pads. A girl at my job wears black ones and nobody cares. She still makes tons of money and gets tons of dances. And she fills her stages. So I don't think it would matter if you wore knee pads.

Kitty, you might also be moving your legs in a way that puts too much strain on your knees. Stand with your heels together and your toes pointing away from each other, and look at your legs. Your leg should be rotation from the thigh, so that inner thighs are rolled forward, and your knee is pointing over your second toe.
If your hips are tight, when you turn your legs out, the rotation is going to come from your knees. Since your knees have no muscle in them, just cartilage, you NEVER want to stretch or rotate them -- the cartilage will NOT stretch back, just become looser. Eventually, your legs could become unstable; I knew a ballet dancer whose knee popped in and out of the joint while she was walking.
Not to scare you, but you cannot be too careful with your knee joints. Start doing hip opening stretches every day, so that your leg rotation can come from the hip rotator. Your physical therapist should know more about this and be able to explain more and show you some stretches. If you want, PM me, I might be able to think of some good ones.

It sounds like you have fluid on your knees. When I first started dancing, it happened to me too. Does it feel as though there's unbearable pressure on your kneecap whenever you bend it? And it's all puffy and watery when you press around your kneecap, and it's visibly swollen?
If that is what is wrong, I would go see a doctor, they can recommend the best treatment for it. My treatment (and please don't try this unless your doctor recommends it) was 600 mgs of Ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory) a day, and STAY OFF OF MY KNEES. The fluid eventually went down (about 2 weeks) and I could dance normally again, but I'm always careful on my knees now.
Another woman I worked with had this problem and had to get her knees drained, so please don't ignore it. Dancing on your knees will only make it worse.
Dropping to your knees very hard and fast tends to cause this, because your kneecaps are only made to take so much pressure, and so your body will form a protective layer around them (the fluid).
Be careful and please go see a doctor--your knees are vital to your job, not to mention, you know, walking.
