    Default dj tipping question again

    Hello.

My club takes 10 percent for the DJ. Last night was an unbelievably good night in which i pulled over 1k. I tipped the dj 120 bucks. Girls at the club were tipping less then 5 percent on their way out.

Now, i think 10 percent is high. But i like to take care of my dj's when they play my songs, etc. But lately this dj hasnt been as friendly or attentive. Should i still tip 10 percent, do you think he now expects it?

    what do i do??????????

Who honestly tips like i do, do you think i am being overly generous? I feel bad sometimes because this dj in particular gets a taxi to work and really doesn't have a lot of money..

ehhh, help!!! I make this club an extrodinary amound of money like once a week when i show up, and I don't really feel appreciated to say the least.

Perhaps he does a crappy job because he is tipped poorly and perhaps he is tipped poorly because he does a crappy job. Endless cycle.

I am a firm believer in tipping an appropriate amount. If it's good service...pay appropriately. If it's bad service....pay appropriately. But perhaps someone can discuss it with him. "The other girls are tipping poorly because they do not feel they are receiving the service they should be." It's not a negative criticism...just a fact.

All of this is provided the other dancers will indeep raise their tippage. If the music is truly that important to everyone, then they should be willing to pay him for it...since that appears to be the way of the industry.

Why am *I* responding??? bored I gues... DJ's??

WOW! I am so jealous! Congratulations - good night!

Here is my philosophy: I have tipped ok all of my stripping career. Would I have tipped him as much as you did? No way. I would have given him about 50. What you make is your own and it is not anyone's business what you make. Especially if the DJ is being kaka to you. I tip well if I make good, if not the average was 30-40. If this DJ is not doing well and takes a taxi to work that is his problem. It is not your problem! You are not his bank - you tip him. Key word - tip. The DJ's for VCG make a very good wage. It became optional for us to tip years ago however, you always want to remain friendly.

On the other hand, I have a friend that tips like you did every night that she works. Why? Because th DJ does a lot of things for her. If she needs more time for privates he will bump her down the list. If she wants to be on stage at a certain point in the night he will put her there. They work as a team in order for her to make the kind of money that you made every night - she in turn takes very good care of him.

Never in my career did I tip according to what I made. Well, I guess I have, if I made really shitty money they might get 10 but that was a very long time ago.

You are in business for yourself not to put money in the club's bank. You are their biggest asset - without you they can't make anything.

ok.. 10 percent is manditory.. But no other girls really obide by it..

the first night i worked there i made about 700, and he knew that, and i tipped out 50. Then he said "its 10 percent, im going to at least need another 20.!" Since then i have tipped him out well. But i know other girls DONT!! Some girls lie about their wages and say it was a shitty night when i know for a fact they were right next to me in the champagne room!!!

I don't want to lie but i feel like i am tipping too much, and would like to share the wealth more with the bartenders/floor men as well..

I think 6 or 7 percent is fair if you make over 500 a night.

I made a point of tipping him the same every night - 30-40 no matter what I made. I furgured that way it evened it self out. If I had a good night, I paid hiim the same. If I had a kaka night I paid him the same.

You are also tipping him for a service in which you are not happy. I would definately say something to him. If you receive shitty service in a restaurant do you still tip well? Do you think - oh that poor waitperson - their service sucked! But, their service probably sucks because they take a cab into work. I should give them more money! No! You probably say - f--- that! They never filled up my coffee cup, my food was delivered to the table cold and they forgot to bring the ketchup. I should leave them a buck.

Who honestly tips like i do
    I did.

It's always a good idea to tip a bit more if you can afford it. A good DJ will notice and remember you when a big spender comes in or when things are a little slow.

BUT-- if you do not feel appreciated then it's a waste of money. Save your good tips for those who give good service.

Sometimes you can "train" a DJ or floorguy by pointing out something you liked that he/she did and tip an extra couple bucks for it right then and there. Do this at a separate time than the usual tipout. This reinforces what they can do service wise for you to earn more from you.

If he's not playing songs for you, etc. he doesn't deserve a high tip! Period! You shouldn't be expected to give a DJ a ton of money when he's underperforming. That just isn't fair to you.

Talk to the DJ, he might not have noticed.
Last night I spoke to mine and asked why he hadn't played any of my music for me (I leave aCD case with him at night.) He said that I used to like that kind of music (we used to work together at another club.) Well, I tipped him an extra ten for the heads up and agreed that I used to like that kind, but could he please play what I have now.
He was quite nice about it and atleast he didn't get mad.
We do pay them and they make their money off of tips alone so there has to be some kind of agreement, or we won't want to.
I say talk to the guy before you lower his tips substantially and then just go with what you think is best.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

TFD, I say you tell him straight out what the deal is. If he's not providing good service then he gets a lower tip. Point out the fact that the other girls are paying him WAY less, and tell him if he wants to continue receiving your extraordinary tips, he needs to earn it. He had no problem demanding the $$ from you; you should have no problem demanding the service from him. No play no pay.

I would never in a million years give a DJ the kind of money you're giving this guy. It is absurd and I don't give a damn if he's dead broke. I work my ass off for my money and I'll be damned if I give it away for nothing. I don't give a dime to street beggars and I don't overpay the DJ!

But on the other hand i RELY on my dj to know my rotation in order for me to make more money, i don't on a waitress. I see where you are coming from though. If i turn around and give him 10 bucks like every other dancer does, and try to explain why im thinking he may be a little pissed. Or have some kind of underlining resentment.
But on the other hand, im usually kind to waiters/waitresses regardless of their service, so maybe you are right!

B, i love your advice. I just don't have those kind of balls!!

besides, id love to start tipping him out less because he just never really did much for it, and less now. But im not sure where to start, and how to go about doing it. Do i need to even explain why to him?

Well, if you want to just start paying less, then just do that. If he says something to you, tell him you're just paying the going rate. If no one else abides by the 10% BS, why should you?

WTF does the DJ really do to deserve that much percentage?

I remember your original post about the 10% and was apalled. In a club with that much earnings potential the DJ is basically extorting money for your kindness. 10% should be taken at clubs where the girls average a smaller amount and have more consistent nights.

I give the DJ $20. Sometimes $30 if he took me off rotation or did something special. But every club is different. Its not hard for him to write the order of names on a piece of paper and call you out. Not deserving of $70 per girl anyway.

I wuv my DJ's, they are the bestest, but I would lie if I were you......

This is hard...I wouldn't suggest going to the management about it (they may come down on everyone). But, you are entitled to PAY for SERVICE. If the DJ is NOT performing up to standard, then you have every right to cut his fee and tell him why.

You cannot continue to go through life feeling "taken advantage of". It's only going to cause you problems. You need to stand up for yourself. If this guy was taking care of you and helping you make more money, then I would definitely tip the 10%...but why tip someone who is not working well with you? STAND UP FOR YOURSELF AND TALK TO THIS GUY!!

    Just my

If you feel that this Dj is not taking care of you by either playing your music or noticing when you are in the dance area, than by all means tip him less. If anything is said than tell him that one hand scratches the other ones back and vise vera. That has usually gotten the point across for me.

also if at all possible then go up before your set on stage and pick out your music. If he doesn't play it than don't tip him at all.

I have my own theory on tipping. First I pay house, then tip my bartenders, waitresses and doorman and then the DJ can have 10% of what I have left... (Unless he's an awesome DJ

Maybe you should get on his level... I always have tipped what I was required and should... You should ask, "do you know why the other girls only tip you less? i hear they are making more than the percentage they are tipping you"

I guess me saying that sounds a bit odd.. Try to do it in a non-prying way... I bet he'd appreciate it! And I'm sure he appreciates the big tips! Congrats on your big nite! Yay!!

Your attitude towards dj's is the reason why the 10% rule is in place.

I cant belive you tip the waitress and the doorguy before the dj.

^ And, I effectively cannot believe that you condone the behavior of a DJ who is not doing his job and still expects to be paid accordingly.

If a waitress or door guy gives me good leads, they will be tipped accordingly. If the DJ is on top of his game and is keeping the energy up for me, then he will get tipped accordingly. However, if they aren't helping, then they don't get tipped. It's just like tipping a waitress the full amount for serving your food...45 minutes after it was ready and then giving you a bad attitude to boot. Would you tip that waitress her "full 15%"?

yes dammit i would! Its a weakness of mine,i over tip even for chitty service.

I dont think its ok for the dj to not work with you and your show hand in hand all night, thats what he is supposed to do.
But to say tip the dj whats left, after the doorguys have been tipped, well fuck that.
Its wrong, and you know it Venus.

Thats like a girl skipping 3 shifts, comming late to work all week, then only tipping you 10 dollars on a friday night because she had to many fines to pay.Its bullshit.

If the dj isnt helping you with your show,i say dont tip him at all.But if he does help you with your show, you need to put him right after house tipout when it comes time for tipping,NOT after the friggin doorguys.

That was my initial reaction, as well, BigGreenMnM--but then I stopped and thought about it. She isn't tipping the bartenders, waitresses, and doorman 10%, but she is tipping the DJ 10%--after her expenses are taken out.

If all dancers were this honest and forthright, DJs would make a lot better money. And though I'm sure you are exceptional, BigG, most DJs I have seen should probably be paying the dancers, since all they do is play what they want anyways, and babble like orangutans up there in the booth, in between trying to grab ass.

The idiots my girlfriend has had to deal with up here in Detroit sure as shit don't deserve 10%, or anything close to it, especially the guy that literally tried to hump her leg one night.

I was tipped the highest, per dancer, of any DJ in Daytona Beach, because I busted my ass for them--but I know damned well a lot of them were still holding out. If I worked with Taylor 0X0, and every night she gave the waitress, bartender, and doorman 5-10$, and then gave me 50-100$, I'd treat her like a princess.

So, if the door guys take me to a table that gets me $300, then I should tip the DJ part of that money? And, then leave the door guy with less money because the DJ should always come first? THAT'S bullshit. I tip in the order of help.

One DJ I worked with was in a very bitchy, prissy mood...and took it out on the newer dancers (when I first started at my club). He would go through stage rotation several times and never call me up. I started work one night at 6pm and up until 11:30pm, I had been on stage ONCE! So, I went to the booth and asked him, "Am I going up soon?" He looked at me and said, "NO!" So, I politely tell him that I'm signing out and going up to eat. No sooner than I sit down to eat my sandwich, do I vaguely hear my name being as being up on stage, NOW. Didn't cue my stage turn...just said, "Now on stage, VenusGoddess!" I had to RUN (in platforms) missed my first song...made it for the second, and then got a dressing down from the DJ and manager. I stood and listened to them reprimand me about making my stage set ON TIME. So, I pulled out the sign-out sheet and showed the manager what time I had signed out to go eat...which he apologized to me for yelling at me and then told off the DJ. Guess that pissed off the DJ even more, because later that night, I was giving a dance to some guys (right in front of the DJ booth) and as I was collecting my money, the DJ decided to put me on-stage again without any warning (he even cued up another dancer and then changed his mind). Since I refuse to leave without collecting my money, I missed the first little part of my stage set (but, the other dancer was standing by the stage wondering WTF since he cued HER and wouldn't put her up). The DJ walked out of his DJ booth and YELLED at me in front of my customers (who I made a lot of money off of). My customers were offended and even went to the manager and told him what happened. I smiled at the DJ and said nothing in front of anybody. I would wait until the end of the night. I also took a bathroom break, and the DJ calls me to the stage WHILE I'M SITTING ON THE TOILET. We have a sign-out sheet for the DJ so they know who's available to dance...there is absolutely no excuse for doing this.

At the end of the night, I had made over $1000 (before tip out). Normally, I would tip about $80-100 to the DJ. I had my DJ money in my hand and then in front of the manager and the dancers, I held the money up to his face and said, "Here is your tipout from me. You can kiss it good-bye because I'll be damned if you think I am going to tip you for your fucking attitude tonight." He looked at the manager and the manager shrugged. I then told him about my customers, which the manager confirmed the customers complained to him. The other "picked" on dancers that night also refused to tip him.

He was really nice to me after that...but I only worked the shifts he didn't (I stopped working Fri/Sat shifts). I was polite to him after that...but, in my mind...what he did was unforgivable.

So, if you condone this in DJ's behavior and really expect to be tipped, then you are living in a fantasy world. You are also condoning BAD service, BAD behavior, and LOUSY attitude when you "over-tip" when that occurs. I refuse to pay for this. If you want to...then that is your perogative. However, not everyone is like you...and not everyone will agree for paying for something that was not received.
