Default How do you dance when...

...you can't do pole tricks? All I really can do is spin around the pole, crawl around, walk around the stage. What else do you guys do, or what did you do before you learned pole tricks? I'm not totally flexible (cant do splits) so I'm kinda confined to swinging my hips around, ect. And people say I look nervous.

    Thanks

You don't have to do a single pole trick to do a good show and get a good audience reaction. Move slow and sexy, use tons of eye contact, call the guys up with your eyes. I get an equally good crowd response / applause from my more subtle dancing as the crazy pole trick girls, and just as many tips (sometimes even more because I'm down where the guys are instead of swinging in the air). It's all about the eye contact.

I forgot to say that one of the reasons I look nervous is because I'm not used to the ridiculous shoes yet (no offense!! lol) and I'm always scared that I'll slip onstage, and that's my worst nightmare.

It really upsets me when customers say "are you nervous?" or "you look nervous" or "you're so shy". Okay buddy, you try walking around naked on 6" spikes, SOBER (I'm not old enough to drink) and see how YOU feel!! grrr!

    Hi Lolita,

As for the shoes have you only worn spiked heels? I personally prefer either a cone or a chunky heel. They are much easier to walk in if you are still getting used to walking in heels. Also I prefer shoes with an ankle strap or boots as opposed to slip on shoes because they feel more secure. Wear them in the house or even to the grocery store. You just have to learn how to distribute your body weight when you wear them. Take advantage of that little slope by the toe of the shoe. If guys ask if you shy play that up. Say that you always act shy around cute guys. Say that you are new to dancing . This often is a good ice breaker. If you are not ready to do pole tricks then remember a good portion of your stage time can be spent actually taking off your clothes. Wear layers and slowly undress yourself while never taking your eyes of the guys. Be sure to always have a sexy smile on your face. If your club allows floor work the book "The S-Factor" has some great floor work techniques. It's a great book all around. Also don't be afraid of the pole. Many pole tricks are very simple but just take a little practice. Have fun out there. Take care!

    thanx nursebette and bridgette!
At the beginning a girl lent me some shoes, and they were spiked but I recently got some chunkier heel shoes.
"I always act shy around cute guys" thats a great line!! Thank you! I'm gonna use it next time I work if someone makes a comment.

Yeah, some clubs don't even have poles so poles aren't always the way to make your money. Practice at home in front of a mirror or maybe even a friend. Find the music you can really move to and just ask your DJ to play it! You don't have to do any tricks, just look like you love what you're doing and love yourself while you're doing it. It can make all the difference. Make eye contact and FLIRT YOUR ASS OFF!! Laugh even! It doesn't have to be soooo serious.

I worked at a club once that didn't have a pole. I didn't like it. They wouldn't let us do floor work either so all we could do is walk around and shake our hips, that gets boring and tiering.

I don't do any pole tricks and I have been dancing for almost 5 years. They are not important. Smile and enjoy yourself on stage. Most new dancers make the mistake of dancing too fast. Just remember to slow down. Also, like others have said, really play up the new or shy routine. You will make money with that! Good luck!

Everyone starts out nervous.... the best thing to do is make eye contact, smile, and give a lot of personal attention. The pole is good for helping you keep your balance. As far as dancing goes.... I have seen girls who have danced for years that were never really that good on stage.... some girls are phenominal..... the thing is you have to watch what other girls do and then give it your own style. To be honest with you I almost wish for the days when I didn't know what I was doing because it was still exciting then. Eventually you will get a routine down and be bored to death of the redundancy of stage work. Just remember that everyone starts out scared but if you stick with it and practice you will feel confident on stage...it all just takes time. Good luck.

remember to MOVE YOUR ARMS. drives me crazy when i see girls moving their asses, and their arms are just hanging limp!! Stretch your arms up and over your head, slide them down your body, toss your hair, etc. Belly-dancer have some SEXY arm movements, if you've ever seen any, though you have to modify them a bit to fit in.
Even spazzy dancers look good if they smile. If you're too nervous to smile, relax your lips press your tongue hard against the back of your front teeth. This automatically produces a big barbie-doll grin without thinking about it. good luck!

I'm not allowed to do any floorwork and although there's a pole I can only swing around it in one specific way. I ended up with one hand on the pole on hand at my hair and my hips moving around. Got boring, I can't wait to learn new stuff too!
