Unfortunately I think the mgmt morons actually think this guy is GREAT! He gets all the best shifts, even when the dancers say he's the worst. We just lost a decent DJ but a new guy has already been hired. The old day guy was supposed to be taking on more nights shifts, but apparently he doesn't YAP INCESSANTLY enough on the mic.
YES, this is the main problem, as far as I can see! Management not only
allows these guys with nasal, whining, irritating voices to shriek endlessly into the mike about "pussy", etc. They
love hiring these morons, and turn away guys with class, talent, and style.
I wrote an amusing story about my experience trying out at the Daytona Beach Pink Pony and getting shot down in flames (for which I was actually relieved--the place was the worst jack-shack I have ever seen!). The head DJ there was a guy who had been fired from the club I was at before for gross incompetence, not to mention being an idiot (he actually wore a non-functioning headset when filling in for a bouncer one night, in order to look like a bad-ass). I will try to find the link for anyone who might be interested...
The one thing I have done that some people complain about is to talk in the middle of the song on occasion--but only when a dancer was doing something outrageously sexy or really going off, and the audience needed to be told to quit trying to ask the girl at their table for a date and
look at the stage. The dancers love the attention, the guys in the audience go up and tip her a lot more, prodding other guys to do so as well. But I haven't seen many other DJs pull this off, and you really have to use discretion when doing this.
It helps that I have a low, bassy voice so it doesn't distract, and I never turn down the music when doing so. Also, the bigger the club, the less you should do it.
Later--also, playing the right music for the dancers is
not something that management appreciates! In fact from my experience having the dancers really like you is a problem, and causes suspicion and resentment.
