As much as I love the author elizabeth wurtzel(prozac nation, bitch) I was dissmayed and a little dissed about what she wrote about dancers in her book bitch.
Take a look what do you think?

Elizabeth Wurtzel (author of Prozac Nation, Bitch and More, Now, Again) wrote in one of her books that she has attended AA meetings all over the U.S. and they were always full of former strippers who say they bottomed out doing exotic dance.

(Wurtzel is herself a erratically woven basket case, but that's neither here nor there.)

As Medusa says, there are thousands of women stripping so who knows what percentage off all strippers wind up in AA meetings - is it higher than that of accountants or plumbers, say? It may be as much due to the culture of money and drugs as to the act of stripping as timmus argues - but it is worrisome

I always try to watch out for the newbies, and guide them through the pitfalls which are especially hazardous during the first few months of dancing.

There's only so much you can do, then they will sink or swim on their own. Generally speaking, I would guess I have done more good than harm in my efforts.

But one area is almost impossible to make any easier for them--the proclivity for so many dancers to be lured into the party life, lots of drugs and drinking and getting in with the crowd that glorify this above all else.

From what I have seen it is an especially hazardous aspect of the business, though this is no reason to add to the negative stereotypical view of dancers.

Hell, doctors have one of the highest rates of substance abuse, and cops beat up their women more than any other profession, but you don't see books devoted to the subject (at least I haven't), or substantially so.

I think it's a perfect job for an alcoholic because drinking is so easy to do on the job. it's often encouraged and makes it easier.

On another note, I love Elizabeth Wurtzel's writings, especially Prozac Nation.
