    Default at home highlighting

Well, not for me, but my boyfriend asked me to put highlights in his hair. Though I've done it on girls, they've all had it done before, so if there were any mistakes you couldn't tell.

Also, his hair is short, and medium brown, but I'm kinda curiouse to see if I can do it correctly, so I told him "sure, no problem" like I really know what I'm doing.

Any tips so this doesn't turn out to be a disaster?

I've been highlighting my hair with the Clairol Herbal Essences streaking kit which I like but I'm not really sure how that'd work for men. (This kit comes with a wand making it easier to do.) I think I've seen highlighting kits for men- I think Feria has one. I'd guess the men's ones might be more subtle? Maybe try doing the highlights in a color that's only a little lighter than his hair color so if you make a mistake it'll be less noticeable. I'm not really sure how I'd do a guy's hair.

I'd do the cap method for a guy.

Use the Chunking highlight kit. Hair color is the same for men versus women, the only difference is packaging.

Chunking does blonde highlights with a cap, its pretty idiot proof but if his hair is super short it might be hard to pull it through the cap.

Also, leave it on about twice as long as the indicator and constantly test strands, it lifts color out very slowly......

    Go with the cap method.

Alternatively, I don't know why more of you gals don't see professional colorists. Even though it's more money, it just seems less painful and with better, longer lasting results, not to mention less hair damage.

Before you ask, yes, my most recent ex was a stylist and certified Goldwell colorist.

I agree cap his head, and only use the holes that he wants highlights at. Also ask what colour he wants his highlights. Better yet tell him to show you a picture. I see alot of guys now with short hair natural brown with bold blonde highlights. Looks pretty cool!

If he wants blonde (really blonde) go with Loreal Super blonde. This does not come with a cap, but you can get one at beauty supply stores just incase.

Start slow, do strand tests, and have him holding a mirror checking the progress.

    Good luck,

    Pamela

Since his hair is short you should use a tipping cap definitely.

Is the capping method the best for women too or just for men? Do any of you ladies use the cap to do highlights? (I've seen the cap in the salon and beauty supply stores but I've never used it.)

Using a cap for short hair is fine, i don't and can't use them due to the fact that my hair is very long. A trick i caught onto along time ago for women with long hair is to buy a cheap wide rimmed straw hat. Cut the holes in the places you want highlights!!!!! The rim on the hat stops hair from touching other hair you do not want lighted by either putting the streaks around the rim of the hat or just letting them hang over!

It works!!!! The plastic hats are hot, and holes to small as well

    Good luck,

    Pamela

I have mine done professionally with the foils. But if you are short on cash, I recommend Loreal Couleur Experte. This is a GREAT haircolor kit where you color your whole head a darker color then paint on the streaks. It looks almost like a professional colorist did it - and it only costs $20! I highly recommend it. I have used it several times in between professional visits and was really pleased - it is really goofproof and gentle as well.

I'm no expert but it seems like capping is a more dated technique for women. Foiling is the updated way to do it.
