A very inexpensive way is to make your own from scratch. You can experiment with your taste buds and you will know exactly what goes into them. A good base I found is Carnation Instant Breakfast. Very inexpensive and it is 10 packets to a box. I usually mix in 1/4 cup of honey wheatgerm and soy milk and whatever fruit I feel like. Now this is a great power shake I drink in the morning and evening. Usually twice a day. A lot of protein is in this. I take my multivitamin along with my breakfast shake.

I heard there are some that make you gain weight & bulk up. I don't want that to happen. Anyone know which ones to avoid?

Be careful with the instant breakfast...they have a load of sugar in them...

Isopure is the name of the shake...comes in all flavors...but I always like getting Vanilla...just add some fresh fruit...drink plain...add a teaspoon of peanut butter (all natural) with a banana...nummcious!!

The company brand I buy the most is called Whey Gourmet. The best flavour I have tried is Orange Creamsickle, it taste like a creamsickle even if you mix it with water. A lot of the protein shakes don't taste all that great if mixed just with water, but that has the least amount of calories. Some other flavours by Whey Gourmet are Chocolate Peanut Butter, Banana, and Strawberry.

It depends on what kind of shake you like, and what kind of protein you digest best.

    1. Do you prefer thick and creamy, like a milkshake...or do you prefer a thinner consistency like 2% milk? I don't like really thick shakes, so the Isopure and Myoplex powders are out for me. Even when I add extra water the whey protein in them is so thick it makes me want to gag. Ready to drink shakes (already mixed and sold in cans or cartons) like PureProtein and MetRx are a good option for thin shake lovers.

    2. What kind of protein agrees with your system the best? That is REALLY important because if you have a sensitive stomach, you DON'T want to drink a protein shake before you go to work. Any fitness competitor will agree: protein shakes create the WORST gas!!
I don't digest straight whey protein very well, so I always look for shakes that have soy, egg and milk proteins in them. Trader Joe's carries straight soy protein powder if you are vegan.

It doesn't sound like you've tried a whole bunch, and it really is trial and error. What's is "good" is always going to be personal preference. My husband hates watery shakes and loves the really thick gloppy ones, so we have just about tried everything....amd disagree on just about everything

My all time favorite is Pro Lean Mass by Extreme Labs. It's not sold in most chain health stores like GNC. It's 44g Protein, 2g Fat, and 4g carbs and only 200 calories. It uses a combo of whey, soy, milk and egg proteins and uses Stevia as a sweetener, so there's no bitter aftertaste like aspartame-sweetened products.

Britney, to be honest...i've never had a protein shake in my life. LOL. Um, to me it wouldn't matter if it was thick or thin, I can pretty much eat/drink anything. Now, I don't digest well. I just don't want to gain weight. I want something that'll be good to drink in absence of a meal....when in rush or something to drink after work. Thanks for the input.

You may want to look at a Meal Replacement Bar instead of a protein shake, because a protein shake taken without working out can add quite a bit of weight. One week I added about 5 pounds of weight from taking protein shakes. They can be taken without working out but depending on your metabolism rate you could end up gaining weight from drinking the shakes. A meal replacement bar can take the place of a meal or be substituted as a snack. Check at your local health food store for different varieties.

AST VP2, its the best post workout shake on the market. I also use Reflex Instant Whey, I have tried a lot of shakes and these are the best ive tasted in all flavours. Im not to sure if you can get it in the US however, but u can always find out.

Stay away from NitroTech, it will do some funky stuff to your stomach. Myoplex was good at one point, but for some reason they decided to improve the flavour and it went downhill.

I used to drink these to gain weight. You should stay away from the ones that say extra carbs or weight gainer formula. Ones like Mammoth 1200 calories. And dont mix with whole milk, just 1 or 2 percent. I think the shakes in the states are different brands than I know though...

You could make your own - it doesn't take that long, and it means you can give yourself some variety. Just pick up a tub of vanilla protein (I like whey, but it depends how fast you want to process it. Whey absorbs within about 30 mins, egg takes 1-2 hours, and casein digests over 2-7 hours, so it's good before bed).

Then you can tailor your shake depending on the time of day. For breakfast, chuck some protein powder, yogurt, museli and fruit in a blender. Change it round depending on what you feel like. Some ideas:

Odwalla Super Protein...it's delicious, and does not "bulk you up." 18 grams of Soy Protein and only 2 grams of fat.

I tried Soyprotein drink and it tasted like ass. I mixed it with water too. You could have done either or though. It was chocolate and sometime meal supplements or shakes is the only way to get in my chocolate fix for the day.

Best MRP around. I usually stick with vanilla for everything since if I want chocolate i can just nibble on my arm.

WHen I was on the low-carb diet, I bought Carb Solutions mix at Dominicks. It mixes up thick if you mix it with milk, and is a good meal replacement. I used to make one for my kid with half the powder and 2 T of peanut butter, and it was all he wanted for breakfast for months. It is pretty cheap, aI thuink a 13-serving can costs abour $12 there. Good luck!
