Default For What It's Worth... A Small Suggestion

Don't mean to hinder discussion or reduce effectiveness/benefit of this forum, BUT - in all seriousness, think long and hard before you put something in print here (or anywhere else, for that matter) which directly or even tacitly implicates you in violations of the law. Specifically, either figure out a way to "talk in code" or, at the very least, word things in the hypothetical, i.e., "my friend has a problem...". Openly admitting to falsifying income amounts, etc., is a VERY, VERY BAD IDEA, and if you think you're anonymous in here, you're sorely mistaken - there is absolutely nothing you do on the net that can't be traced and, the way the law is working right now re net surveillance, the government has the ability to force ISP's, web-site owners, etc., to turn over info on you without you ever even being informed that they're looking into you're data.

Like I said, don't mean to be such a downer - but it makes me cringe every time I see a post with too much info, K?

This is absolutely true, GB. In the case of posters who have cable modems or DSL, it would be a super simple matter for any law enforcement agency to simply backtrack the "static IP".

I'm not sure that BBS post content could be used as evidence in any way, but it certainly could be used as a basis to start investigating further. I'm sure that you're thinking of the scenario where a particular dancer has posted in one place that she's earning $600+ a night, and then makes another post in Dollar Den asking questions about tax rates and estimated tax filing which tend to indicate she has never done any of this previously !

In truth, I would suspect that the IRS would be pleased that this BBS is providing info to dancers in regard to how the tax law applies to them and what they must do to comply with that law. This would seem to be particularly the case given the independent contractor vs employee dancer dilemma, the false information or "illegal" tax structures being perpetrated by some clubowners etc. However, as you correctly point out, you never know what a law enforcement agency might decide to latch onto ...

While I have some doubts as to whether the IRS is doing this today, there is nothing that I know of which prevents them from doing so at some point in the not-too-distant future. The IRS has deals with a number of dataminers and the only thing constraining them is computing time and storage space.

Aja... but it's not just the IRS - it's DOJ. Watch how they take clubs down when they decide to do so: they roll them up from the bottom using the dancers. And the way the tide's running right now, it's not too far-fetched to imagine Ashcroft & Co. deciding to launch a campaign of that sort at some point in the not-to-distant future. In any event, it's just not a good idea to put your business in the street like that.

also, it doesn't necessarily have to be the IRS looking...

It can be your ex-boyfriend or someone who has it out for you who happens to stumble on this information. I worked with a girl that was reported to the IRS by her ex and from what I undertstand, this is how most of these kinds of audits get started.

Yes this is absolutely true. While the IRS may randomly pursue a dancer, odds are much higher that any IRS investigation involving the dancer was "directed". As you posted, it may stem from a specific complaint from an angry ex or other family member or neighbor. It is also likely to stem from some criminal investigation of the club itself, of other dancers working at the club, of club customers etc. where a law enforcement agency has probable cause to investigate the club and in the process discover documents listing dancer's personal info, number of nights worked, private dance/champagne room payouts etc. which are passed on to the IRS.
