"If men of wisdom and knowledge, of moderation and temperance, of patience, fortitude and perseverance, of sobriety and true republican simplicity of manners, of zeal for the honour of the Supreme Being and the welfare of the commonwealth; if men possessed of these other excellent qualities are chosen to fill the seats of government, we may expect that our affairs will rest on a solid and permanent foundation." --Samuel Adams

I was about to create a new thread for posting favourite quotations, but I came accross this old one already existing in Blue.

A couple I've been particularly interested in lately:

“Above all, never struggle or strain; but be master of yourself, and view life as a man, as a human being, as a citizen, and as a mortal. Among the truths you will do well to contemplate most frequently are these two: first, that things can never touch the soul, but stand inert outside it, so that disquiet can arise only from fancies within; and secondly, that all visible objects change in a moment, and will be no more. Think of the countless changes in which you yourself have had a part. The whole universe is change, and life itself is but what you deem it.”

    - Marcus Aurelius

Another way of putting it, from Shakespeare's Hamlet:

"There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so."

And this from the Tao Te Ching:

When people see some things as beautiful,
    Other things become ugly.
When people see some things as good,
    Other things become bad.

This has to be about the oldest thread ever resurrected. I'm sure all the vets wonder from time to time how the fishmeister is doing.
