Default Media with strippers as the subject

I was wondering what you guys had seen for media with strippers as the subject:

    Movies:

Striptease with Demi Moore not bad
Kiss of fire with Christina Applegate not very good
Showgirls with Elizabeth Berkley not bad

All of which are interesting to see in the buff.

    Body Language with Tom Berenger
and Nancy Travis (unfortunately not the stripper)
    Brutal but it's a "B" movie

But have you seen "Exotica" which was just on right now - very good plot.

    TV:

Dancing at the Blue Iguana (HBO)
G-String Divas (HBO) - all too true sometimes

    -Sad-

I'd say the majority of movies about strippers are pure crap, loaded with stereotypes.

    I've seen:

    - Showgirls (hated it, hate the directors guts)
    - Striptease (too boring)
    - Exotica (decent, but a tad too deep for my tastes)
    - Body Language (boring, stereotypical)
    - Stripteaser (forgettable)
    - Stripteaser 2 (slightly better, and I mean slightly)
    - Lap Dancing (yawwwn)
    - Midninght Tease 2 (strippers being killed! how original)
    - Last Dance (awful but addictive B movie on the old USA
    Up All Night show)
    - Some B-flicks with Shannon Tweed (so bad
that I can't remember the names)

    On TV

    - G-String Divas (breathtakingly honest, and would they put the series out on DVD damnit! Kind of sad the club they shot it at closed before the episodes even aired.)

    Books

    - Ivy League Stripper by Heidi Mattson, about a Brown University student who danced at the Foxy Lady in Providence, RI.

Haven't seen Blue Iguana (and am told I'm not missing much). There was also an episode of Investigative Reports on A&E, circa 1997, about the strip club industry that I wanted to see, but didn't.
    Former SCJ now in rehab.

This one sounds interesting. Particularly since I've been there.

Exotica was artsy and the dance was only a little interesting. But I was interested in why he was so obsessed with her. I wasn't disappointed.

Shannon Tweed - of course - Al Bundy's favorite actress.
I hadn't seen any of those.

(I hate thinking about Al when I go to clubs. It really reduces my hobby to a lower level, instead of the deep, rich experience that it really is ... lol)

    Gotta go to work.

I loved Showgirls! Striptease was on VH1 tonite and Iw atched the first 20 minutes before I got bored. First of all, I never seen a stripper wear those types of outfits (those shoes too - who dances in pumps?) and they way they danced. Weird to me. Maybe in other parts of the country things are different, but it seemed pretty stereotypical to me. A sleazy hang-out, etc.

Try "Strip City", a book published a couple of years ago. It was written by a dancer, but I have still not read it. Also Ithought "Showgirls" was stupid and not a very accurate portrayal of the biz. "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" may be boring as it is more film noir style, and unless you really get into the kind of story lines in foreign films. You may not really like it, but it really is accurate. Oh, except the parts where the guys are throwing gobs of money at the girls.

Otherwise the media is greatly lacking in positive or realistic artistic works as far as the strip industry goes. Maybe Pam Anderson's Stripperella animated series will change some public opinion towards dancers, but somehow I doubt it.

Anyway, that is all I can think of for now

There was a movie released in 2001 called "The Center of the World" starring Molly Parker. It's about a guy that pays a dancer to spend three days with him in Las Vegas. The movie was okay, but it didn't really say much.

There's a book out called "G-Strings and Sympathy: Strip Club Regulars and Male Desire" by Katherine Frank. It focuses on the experiences of male customers. It's a bit of a dry read so far.

Hey Doc if you have Bright House digital cable they have this thing called HBO on Demand- in the late night section of specials they usually have at least one G-String Divas available. Right now there are several showing.

So who was your fav on that show?

I just finished "Ivy League Stripper". It was a great, very frank book about the attitudes and pressures on a stripper working very hard to complete her education.

I enjoyed her strength and her grappling with morality issues.

It was actually the first book I've read in awhile. My head is too into reading for work, not to enjoy.

Thanx for the tip, Doc. I also got "Strip City", which I will start reading shortly.

Sad- let me know how Strip City is. I just ordered it. As far as those movies I havent seen any of them. I also haven't found anyone who says theyre good. lol. I did used to watch g-string divas, when I was 17. I loved it. It made want to become a dancer even more than I did. (seriously) lol. blame it on HBO

I will. Try the other book, too. It was great. I sent an e-mail to Heidi Mattson of Ivy League Stripper. I'll be curious to see if she responds.

Bored...so I think I'll give my two cents....

Dancing at the Blue Iguana was not that great of a movie. I wasn't really entertained although I wasn't dancing yet so maybe I would have a different outlook now.

If anyone runs across a movie called Stripper Wives, don't get it. It took about a week to finally be at the video store when the movie was in so I figured it would be good. It's really bad. It's a B movie about some ordinary women who want to learn to dance erotically for there men. It try's to have in depth story line but at best it's close to a poorly done soft porn.
If any of you have seen it, do you agree?

All the other movies I have seen also except the HBO movies cause I don't have cable. I spend my time doing better, enriching things...like dancing naked for strange men (LOL)

I've read Ivy Leage Stripper...I liked it, But not a whole lot.

Dancing at the blue Iguna is constantly on Star Choice, so I've seen it a number of times. A slow moving film that trys hard but seems to be really negative about dancing...See it anyway, at least for that lovely young brunette who I is near perfect in my books.

I TOTALLY agree with you, I saw that video at Blockbuster and rented it...SO lame and totally not what I expected it to be.
My favorite stripper movie is Showgirls, I don't know why I just LOVE that movie. The manager in that movie acts JUST like a manager I used to work with, right down to the way he smokes his cigarettes. It is almost scary how much they remind me of each other...

Although the movie is not about strippers, I just saw "American Wedding", VERY nice bachelor party scene with a couple of hot blonde strippers (one being Nikki Ziering). Very funny movie also, check it out if you're looking for a few good laughs.

    Yeah! Stripperella is funny!
I've seen a few scenes that take place at Stripperella's club (The Tender Loins) that spoke true...a hottie sending some guy off to the ATM and remarking what a loser he is, a new girl who turns out to be a catty bitch with the other dancers, a guy ignoring his lap dancer to watch Stripperella (Erotica Jones) on stage, etc.

I just wrote an essay for a pop-culture studies mag called Bitch (get it at tower or b&n) about all the books about strippers, most with a feminist attitude. here are all the books I read for it if you're interested in expanding your stripper library:

    Strip City
    G-Strings & Sympathy
    The Lusty Lady (Langley)
    Live Sex Acts (Chapkis)
    Real Live Nude Girl (Queen)
    Ivy League Stripper
    Bare (Eaves)
    Striptease Culture (McNair)
    Sex Work (Delacoste & Alexander)
    Whores & Other Feminists (Nagle)
    Jane Sexes It Up (Johnson)

Stripping/sex work is a HUGE issue in feminist academia now and IMHO has spilled into pop culture... in a mostly good way I think, at least in the sense of treating it like just another job women might choose to do and not as some horrible pit girls fall into unsuspecting...

Which of the books you listed would you give the highest recommendation and why?

Just wanted to add my two cents on "G String Divas", on HBO. One of the main girls of that show now works with me at the Cheetah III in Pompano Beach Florida. She was the one with the really long hair. I can't remember her name on the show and actually I don't even remember her name at work but she is a great stage performer. She did get her breast enhanced. I havn't really talked to her because our club gets pretty busy and there isn't much time for us girls to commune with each other wich is more than fine to me but I just thought I would share.
