    Default Indi Flick

Came out of lurking for a question. I know I should post this on the pink site, but I'm sure it would be ignored & overlooked.

Just finished the third draft of a screenplay I've been working on, and my editor/critic buddy has almost convinced me that we should seriously try to produce it. Mind you I'm a broke college student, but I could get the cameras, have the cars, maybe the locations (ASU willing), and most of the main cast for nada.

Anywho, there's a scene that calls for two or three "party girls", no nudity or anything, but I don't have the green to pay for strippers to come out and do it. Most of the cast is 20somethings (except one or two "older" folks), so I would be looking for girls in that age group. Do you think if I tried to drop off flyers at clubs or something similar would there be girls who are interested? Is there a "stripper newspaper" or something I could run an add in? I mean I could dress up regular girls, but I think it would just look like someone trying to act like a dancer, and I want it to be as authentic as it can be.

Also, back in the day when these forums were young, I mentioned something about me writing screenplays and someone PMed me saying they would "test screen" my screenplays for me. I forget who that was but if you're still on here, or anyone for that matter, who would want to give me some feedback you can E-mail me at [email protected]

Hello. I've been lurking for a long time but decided to register to respond to you, ASU.

I am a producer/director of nationally-distributed corporate films (mostly training films on stuff like management skills, sexual harassment, preventing workplace violence, etc. yada, yada, yada). I know that many of my friends in the SC biz are interested in acting and several of them have legitimate screen credits, mostly as extras but some speaking parts. They are not always cast as "party girls" but do often fill those parts that involve nudity, etc. just because the casting director knows they'll do a good job and not be too self-conscious. I've even used several successfully in my corporate films and they've appreciated the experience, as well as the fact I did pay them a standard day rate.

<<sidenote: did anybody see The Contender with Jeff Bridges and Joan Allen? One of my best friends was the girl in the college frat party video that was supposed to be the Joan Allen character as a young women - yep, the one on all fours getting gang-banged. What a film credit to put on your resume! But the role was so central to the story, so it was kind of fun for her.>>

It would be worthwhile to spread the word at a SC you frequent and see if you get any takers. Be up front about what the project involves, especially the lack of budget, and don't just try to play it up as their "big break" in the business. If you're straight with them, you'll likely get more consideration and probably get someone to help you out for the fun and experience. As long as you are honest and pass the "perv smell test" you've got a good chance of finding some actors.

How are you planning to shoot your film? On 35mm, 16mm, or DV? Do you have any technical experience with shooting? Or know someone that does? Indies shot on DV can certainly be successful, but they have to be well done technically because the DV format is not as forgiving of poor lighting, etc. as film might be. I've shot everything from 35mm to MiniDV and, although I've never gone the indie route myself, one of my friends has been the Cinematographer on a couple of films that have gone to Sundance. I keep thinking I'll catch the indie bug myself one day and get off the corporate gravy train. Good luck to you. Oh, have you ever read "Rebel Without A Crew" by director Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Desperado, and now all the Spy Kids flicks). Must reading, very entertaining and motivational for aspiring filmmakers.

    Best of luck,
    Bosshog
