When it is all done, click on the tiny print at the bottom of the page in the center - where it says "info" (Look for it!) This guy went to a lot of trouble to get his point across. I think every American needs to read this and feel blessed that we live in this wonderful land. While we are enoying our SC hobby, there are others defending our right to do so!

Um, I don't think we need that. I think dwelling on it only serves to exacerbate many of our continuing problems that resulted from it. The health of our country and economy is directly related to how the people view it.

Not to say we should be running around in a fog, but I am positive that all the reminders are unnecessary. Living in fear won't stop another attack, but it will help ensure our economy stays in the gutter. Scared people don't invest or spend.....

Sorry Bridgette, but I have to disagree. After 9/11 everything changed . America had been naive and now we know what can happen if we are not vigilant.

As far as the economy be "in the gutter" I can't speak for PR but economic stats for the last 6 months in the US have been very good including 8% increase in GDP in one quarter. As far as scared people not investing The Dow is up about 23% and the Nasdaq is up about 43% over the last 12 months. So someone must be investing.

Witt, perhaps that is because people are less scared now than they were at the end of 2001.....

But I would argue that some of those numbers have possibly been influenced by factors that can create 'false' positives. It all depends on how it's presented.

Excellent site Chuck. We too often take things for granted, sometimes a reality check is needed.

As for the economy, statistics can be misleading, yes the markets are up (thank god), and corporate profits are up, but the fact is many people are still unemployed, many people still work with the fear of being laid off, new jobs are not being created, and income levels are not increasing (except for CEO's who's bonuses are based on cutting costs, i.e. cutting jobs, moving jobs overseas).

I admit that job creation has not been at a point that I like to see, but the data has been getting better. Employment is normally the last indicator to improve.
Economic data across the board(not just one or two reports) has been consistantly up. So if the info is misleading it has been misleading in numerous sectors and over many months. However; I admit I am always optimistic by nature.

What's that saying about economists ? Something like if you get 100 different economists in the same place at the same time with the same data you will get 100 opinions ? So I its anyones guess

I won't begin to express my opinions on the state of post 9/11 economy, other than to say that I'm still employed whereas a lot of people aren't and I'm very thankful for that.

I do know that if I owned a strip club, no customer in the armed forces (or retired from such), or belonged to the police or fire department would ever have to pay a cover charge to get in. It would be the least that I could do.

Thought it was good, because the key issue is that we are still at war with a religous based ideology that wants to kill us all... and I mean all. Unlike the cold war where I recall standing on a street cornor as a child and asking, "which way will the missles from Cuba come and will we hear them?" this war is silent and not often seen.

World War II was the war of my father in which people in dark green army uniforms fought the war.

Or the cold war, in which the war was fought in submarines
with missles under the sea, and underground in North Dakota with people in light blue uniforms and arming keys.

This looks like a CIA war in which the front line is the CIA
and special forces, backed up by the regular army and military on occasion. We don't see it day to day.

Whatever the reason, the current war that was manifest on
September 11, 2001 is not over, and may never be over even when we catch Bin Laden this year.

A religous based war may never end, unlike the economic system war that did.

We may take comfort at the moment that we appear to be winning, and that most muslims are logical people, and don't really want to take on the entire world lead by the United States.

But it is not over by a long shot.

A fine contribution Chuck. It serves to remind us what we are all fighting for.

I think this is an overly pessimistic viewpoint. While you might find some technical truth to a bit of this, it is very misleading of the market as a whole. For example, job creation stats are very stagnant. However, unemployment is down significantly and going lower every quarter while expendable income is on the rise. The clear interpretation is that these are finding work, though it is "off the stats" (ie; new businesses which haven't been in existence long enough to be counted, the private sector, entrepeneurs or work-at-home situations).

Reading the economic indicators takes finesse and the ability to read between the lines, as only the most pedestrian of statistics can be counted with any reliability (and thus we get a mere portion of the information). I have good reason to believe in the resiliency of our labor force. It is that resiliency and fortitude which pulls America out of the mire, rather than government or corporations.

Thanks Chuck. I've seen the sight before but it's been a while. It's good to have the link.

I don't think living in fear is what this is all about. It's about facing reality. One of the most striking photos is the one of people running from the falling towers. Prior to 9/11, most Americans had never had to run from anything that threatened our percieved superiority to the rest of the world.

    Everything is different now.
