What's with Violent Porn?

I just saw the PrimeTime special on porn and I am wondering why violent porn is the biggest seller in that industry. I read through the porn thread below here in sex talk but I didn't really see the answer as to why it's so popular to watch women being hurt in sexual scenerio's ???

I read the rubber necking theory and the giving up control theory but that doesn't explain why it turns you guys on. That's not a normal reaction. Studies have shown the people usualy have a gut reaction to brutality- literly a gut reaction like nausua for example. Why is it differnt when it comes to sexual violence toward women?

I've got a couple ideas for an explanation (but not an excuse).

It's the "revenge" of the reject, to conquer that which he despises and desires at the same time. Violent sex is "conquering her" in getting the sex he wants coupled with the violent revenge for being rejected or unwanted. Kind of like on the soap opera's where the dumped person kills the ex with the "If I can't have you, no one will" line.

Or it's just an S&M thing. Sheesh...if you can think it up, there's some guy(s) out there that think it's hot. (although this wouldn't explain the widespread popularity that you found, Laura). It could be just a question of degrees...I couldn't count how many laps I've experienced where the dancer slaps her ass. Now technically ass-slapping and hair-pulling are violence yet both have appeared on the forums as turn-ons on both sides. It's just a lesser form.

Who specifically said it was the biggest seller? I am curious. The networks for some reason love to have feminists and religous zealots feed them bullshit and they disseminate it at face value without checking the facts first. The truth might tend to hurt their ratings.

I couldn't watch the Nick Berg video. The still frames were bad enough. Hell, I had trouble watching the rape scenes from "The Accused", "Showgirls" and "Thelma & Louise" and those were just movies. Violence is violence is violence as far as I'm concerned.

One thing I should point out here is that we may not exactly have the same connotation of what is "violent". There is a lot of S&M material that appears that way, but that material is meant within the context of fantasy (mind you that in such porn the tables can be turned where the women act just as brutally towards the men). Either way, its not my style.

I saw the show as well last night. I have always known that these types of films were out there, but never understood the attraction. The only conclusion that I have ever been able to come to is that these films cater to the viewer that, sadly enough, fantasizes about rape. I agree with D.C. the mutual abuse that goes on between men and women in S&M films(while not my cup of tea either) cater towards a fantasy. I cringe at the thought of what the next big craze will be in the porn industry.

Dr. C- I am fairly sure during the show it was said that those were the biggest sellers. I suppose it could be exagerated but it certianly has become more popular. I didn't want to watch the complete Nick Berg video either. The short version that appeared on my local news was enough or even too much- I paced my livingroom floor for several minutes in shock and horror.

There is absolutely nothing about that is a turn on. Infact I once saw a porn at a bachelor party that had a rape scene. I left the room as it disturbed me so much, and didn't watch another porn for almost 5 years afterwards. As it is I think most of porn is a turn off because the sex is too impersonal for me (or is downright silly, like watching a gymnastic event), but when it turns violent towards women it makes me feel sick.

I do think that giving up control is the ultimate in sexy, but only when the woman willingly does so. Trying to force it makes no sense ... what makes it hot is that someone has willingly given you their complete trust. Taking it (through violence) is the exact opposite.

Oh as far as that statistic on the show, Adult DVD Empire (http://www.adultdvdempire.com/) sells a ton of porn (VHS too) of all kinds, including S&M stuff. They have a current bestseller list. I did a quick glance and didn't see any violent or out of the ordinary stuff on the list...just lots of the typical categories and Jenna Jameson vids.

I assumed LauraLove was talking about porn that shows violence against a woman (e.g., forcing or hurting women against their wills)... which is not a turn on at all.

If its something you like, nobody really gets hurt, and it is mutually enjoyed/agreed-on then (in my mind) it is not violence, its just hot and nasty sex play (and I'm all for more of that )

I didn't see the TV special, but I have seen a pretty healthy sample of fairly violent-ish porn as of late.

In general, I don't care much for porn.. I've never found it the slightest bit arousing to see some half-mast beefcakes gym boy lick like he's painting a fence for 20 seconds, then hop and do a jackhammer impersonation... finally leading to some sort of "field goal kick" ritual from the 10 yard line finish. *yawn*

As far as the violence level- in these parts, it's the women that seem to like the more violent porn than the men. Just as romance is dramatized and overly portrayed in Hollywood, rough sex is equally dramatized and overly portrayed in porn. It's just an overzealous embellishment of the rougher/alpha male sex that older peeps start getting accustomed to and crave.

And nah, I don't believe for a moment it's some sort of "repressed" rejection psychosis or revenge.. people can enjoy rough, alpha, masculine sex and not have even the slightest discord with the opposite gender. There are plenty of women that absolutely thrive and crave being tied up, hair pulled, "taken" in a variety of ways and generally manhandled. Porn, like Hollywood, has a tendency to take this craving and amplify it 10x in order to sell.. and as long as nobody is hurt during the filming, it's all good.

Then again, my perpective could be a little regionally skewed. This is a place where a few blocks from the fancy restaurant are public dungeons (BYOF- Bring your own flogger) and some clubs have a "leave the nipple clamps at the door" policy...

Many people who don't like porn would see all hardcore porn (like gangbang movies) as violent. I don't agree.

The report finds some of the 1% gross stuff, and talks about that. They then get a prude to equate all hardcore porn to the gross truely violent stuff -- and show that hardcore porn is huge. Thus they say violent porn is huge. It's not.
