Default Many Thanks to Mods, Pryce and GirlFriday

I know everyone has been busy with testing and migrations. While the interface is relatively the same, if my understanding is correct, the biggest reason for the migration has to do with backend programs and basically the integrity of servers and user information, which is always very important. So, while we may not see many changes, there is a lot in the background that effects us tremendously.

A special thanks to Pryce and GirlFriday - with any luck, you two are actually getting some sleep, now. I've been there...none of this is as simple as the flip of a switch. Did you keep count of the "oops"es "SHIT"s??

    Thank you, guys and gals.

Works well so far, though some of the posts have the " " all messed up.

Site migration is a right bitch.

For those who haven't made the trek yet, in the Site Issues section of the site, we have more info on what's new, what's in the works, and what was left behind.

We've planned and tried hard at this migration. We still have a more work to do, but so far things are going well. It's nice to know it's not in vain and that you appreciate it!

I've been wanting to update everyone on what we're doing and where we're headed with the site. I have always believed in good communication between the members and administration. We’re a community here – it’s important that you know what’s going on. It has been about 9 months since our last public update - so I'll take the time to do it now. Let me take it back...waaaaay back to the last few months of '01.

There was a site geared towards exotic dancers that had articles and sometimes a forum. GF and I made friends with two posters there - Bridgette and Charlotte. After hearing about two bad encounters with the owners (from B and another woman) I thought about creating a place that existed first and foremost for dancers. A place that focused and promoted the positive side of stripping. A place full of support and experienced advice. A place that was fun and safe.

I told Charlotte about the idea and she really encouraged me and said that I should contact B who had a similar desire. It was easy in the beginning. I picked the best software I could find and promoted the site. A short time later Bridgette suggested the pink colors and donated many articles (check 'em out in our revamped article section). From there we slowly collected a wonderful group of members. At that small size - quality information flowed easily and problems were few and far between. I am very proud to say that many of those original members are still around. Thank you guys - you are truly an asset for everyone here.

I believe our success was due to the fact that dancers needed a place where they could honestly communicate with others. In clubs there can be a lot of competition between dancers - so exchanging information can be a bad decision. Between customers and dancers there is usually that "stripper-veil" - good for making money, bad for honesty. All of this causes a lot of misinformation to be exchanged, within the industry and out of it. Just look how the media interprets the industry. The environment we created worked around all of this. By gathering members from around the world and giving everyone a little bit of anonymity - dancers could now share inside tips and news without fear of competition. Customers could tell dancers what works and what doesn't. Dancers could share problems with others who understand them and their lives. People had a need, we had a solution, the two found each other. Not only do dancers find help through our site, but our site also helps paint an accurate picture of the industry and the women who work in it. That’s something nothing else does.

From the beginning I said the site would become what the members made of it. Those original members did an amazing job setting the bar high. As the world has changed over the past few years and our size has grown - we have had to change too. We've learned what it takes to be an online community; we've learned the challenges of an online community together - all of us playing a part in it. There are people who can't play well with others - those who want to anger members, those who want all of the attention, those want to mislead, those who want to SPAM, etc. As our numbers grow, we have more people who share good advice, more people for support, but it's also only natural that we will have more of the problem posters. Thankfully, we have developed policy and technology to deal with these problems and we're only getting better at it. I don't think we'll ever see the day when we run into no problems, but that's where we aim.

About a year and a half ago I was finishing college and didn't have much free time. ALL of my time was spent at school or dealing with site issues. I had no time to develop the site. So I asked GF to quit her job and help me. We built the club database and she has since stayed on to help me with the daily upkeep: PM’s, moderating, emails, gallery pics, promotion, verifying new club entries, etc.

In January, I researched & realized how much effort it takes to keep a community of this size up and running. As other members have recently pointed out, most online communities are junk now-a-days, overrun with flamewars, spam, and mis-information. They start off with good intentions, but can't stay afloat. It takes a LOT of time to keep these things going. That combined with the fact that internet users don't like spending money, makes online communities a very costly venture - time and money-wise. One of two things usually happen with online communities: one, the founders begin to neglect the site as their lives change and the site becomes a wasteland of spam and flamewars. Or two, in a last ditch effort to make the site survive, the owners whore out the site to pop-ups, ads all over the place, and selling things unethically. I will do none of those. I will either navigate the community to success or I will put it to bed. I won't neglect it and watch it self-destruct. Nor will I lie or push products that I don't believe are in the best interest of my members to make a quick buck. Those are my promises to all of you.

Personally, I feel that many of us have invested a lot into this wonderful community. That means something to me. I will not see it go to waste - disappearing into the black-hole of failed internet sites. That's when I made my post, "Changes are coming - An important note about the future of StripperWeb", about having to take on sponsors and making the site member supported.

"Virtual" communities’ operate very similar to traditional communities. As they grow larger they become harder to maintain simply because there are more opinions, feelings, etc. 50% of our members have posted on the site - that's 4000+ people interacting. Imagine a party that size. It's hard to keep it all smiles. But we’ve always done things differently here and it’s worked. We've even been recognized for it. In 2004, we were nominated for the Prix Ars Electronica - CyberArts Digital Communities Award (the Oscar of community awards). We didn't win, but in a world of failed sites - I think we surprised many who would simply write this place off as a "stripper" website. It’s a rare thing we’re all a part of here – pioneering the future of communication and community.

When we realized what it would take to keep things alive here, GF and I came up with a detailed business plan & schedule to keep StripperWeb around for the long-term. Three months ago we dedicated ourselves full-time to the site - no school and no work. We believe in this community, the need for it to exist, and its members. We want to see it to success. We are now a month ahead of schedule! You have been seeing us make those planned changes that we believe are necessary for the community. There are no experts at this – we’re winging it like everyone else – doing what we think is best. But we can't and never have done it alone. There are roles to be filled. A community's success cannot hinge on the actions of 1, 2, or even 20 people. It takes many - and here we all are.

With more members and more boards, GF and I found all of our time being consumed dealing with those daily tasks. It was quickly becoming impossible to keep up with all of the threads. So we came to all of you to help select people who were close to what's going on, helpful, and trustworthy. We now have our 21 moderators! The community had a need and members rose to find a solution. The mods do a wonderful job keeping things on track and helping to minimize the damage done by problem posters. Their help has also freed us up to actually develop the site. You're now seeing the fruits of that labor. First we secured sponsors so we could afford the new software and the time to work on it. Next we purchased the software, tested it, installed it, and customized it for all of you. We're still not done, but the new forum is faster, more secure, offers more modern features to all of the members, mods, and GF & myself. We all have better tools to do what we need to do. We now expect to have more time to develop the site and create more useful features in the near future.

We are approaching the next phase I mentioned in that post I made in January, becoming a member supported site. What does that mean exactly? We will be offering upgraded accounts for a small monthly fee. They will include: faster load times with no ads, access to more private boards, private message tracking, unlimited pm box size, a SW or SCJ email address, larger avatars, full article access, memberlist searching, stealth template (without pictures or bright colors for when you're on a public computer), access to the new StripperWeb portal (http://my.stripperweb.com), special title and rank stars, a spell checker, and more. We haven't worked out all of the details, but we expect to be done around December/January. Memberships will be tax deductible for dancers and those in the industry.

Just like we needed those strong members in the beginning - as we move into this next phase, we will need leading members again. Those original members set the tone – it’s now time to carry that on into the future. We don’t know what that is yet, but one day we’ll be able to look back and see the difference our efforts made.

After the membership system is running we will be expanding the Market Place into a classifieds section that will have job listings, service listings, etc. Once these two changes are done, the site will be financially stable - but it will take your support to make it happen. As always, we are committed to this community and the idea that dancers should have a fun and safe place to go for advice and support. That’s why we’re here everyday.

We will continue to offer the free accounts for as long as we can – it all depends on how well the classifieds section and platinum membership does. Feel free to ask questions. We’ve been pretty swamped with work because of the move, but we’ll do our best to answer them.
We all imagine ourselves the agents of our destiny, capable of determining our own fate. But have we truly any choice in when we rise, or when we fall, or does a force larger than ourselves bid us our direction. Is it evolution that takes us by the hand, does Science point our way, or is it God who intervenes keeping us safe.

So much struggle for meaning, for purpose. And in the end, we find it only in each other. Our shared experience of the fantastic. And the mundane. The simple human need to find a kindred, to connect. And to know in our hearts... that we are not alone.
