If you could spend up to 30k on a used car..
What would it be and why?

I'd buy what we are currently making payments on..a Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Granted it's lacking in the power dept, but it's a good mix of familymobile and cruiser......

Audi TT Quattro ! However I still couldn't convince myself a 3 year old car was worth $25 grand, so I sprang for a very low mileage 1 year old Subaru WRX instead.
BMW 330Ci; about $28K used in the Northeast.
Excellent tracking and suspension, pretty good horsepower for a small NA engine, German ergonomics, solid craftsmanship, good gas mileage and excellent safety features.
However, for about $5K less, I'd probably just buy a new VW Jetta GLI.

casual i was thinking that, i have a bmw z3 now. But i don't think the convertable would be good up north? without a garage
i was thinking x5? but gas mileage is horrible..
so now it brings me to a lexus is 300, but i want something a bit nicer.
330Ci is a coupe (hard roof).
Only thing that sucks about it sucks about all BMWs except the X-series; rear-wheel drive. And rear-wheel drive in the Northeast isn't the best idea.

i think you can get an audi tt cheaper then 25k now..
i love audi's and grew up with them. But my interest is in the s4 and a8..
way out of the range ofwhat i want to spend on a car.
yea.. you are right.. 330i conv was what i wanted next until the move to up north..
the xi or whatever adds a good deal to the price. hmm, what to do!
Oh, and i refuse to buy anything new,(car) even if i had a billion dollors. It depreciates so much within the first yr, or couple.
I could spend up to 34,00, but no higher really. I like the new 525 series! But thats barely a yr old and still going for mid 40's or high 30's i believe.
Depends on what you are looking for . But,
for 30k
Jaguar X or S type 2003 currently own and love it.
Nissan Pathfinder. Currently own. This is the second one. great price.
Infinity G35 2004 Almost bought it.
Porsche Boxter ... I miss my 944 but this is the replacement.
Lexus GS 300 Have had 2 and love em.

For a toy, I am looking for an 89 to 91 Porsche 928. About $100k new but now from $17k to $25k but look out for the repairs.
Oh, since this topic is under Stripping..
Disclosure: The above cars have all been certified to be the car most driven by successful strippers.
If you don't drive much (under 15K a year) that makes sense. But if you drive a lot, don't focus on depreciation since you're going to eat those costs anyway.Oh, and i refuse to buy anything new,(car) even if i had a billion dollors. It depreciates so much within the first yr, or couple.
For example, I drive about 30K miles a year. Leasing won't work, and buying a car with a questionable history (or even a dealer warranty) is not a great option. This necessitates owning a car for as long as I can.
Keep your driving habits in mind before adhering to the oft-stated rule about new car depreciation.

After being a long time lover of SUV's (I currently have a Pathfinder) I am now beginning to really appreciate smaller - no, very small - cars. I'd love for my next one to be a Mazda 3, Mazda Miata, or my alltime new fave - the Scion B. That's the one that looks really boxy. At first they reminded me of mini hearse's because of the ultra square shape, but I love them now. They are totally customizable on the inside with lights, steering wheel designs, stick shift lights, etc. Really cool!
Piper
sitri... awesome taste in cars!!!and piper, im the exact opposite. Im in a tiny car now and want something MUCH larger. Still will probally get an x5. (even though gas mil)
and casual 30k miles a year, wow, id be lucky to do 12.

If it is for up north, I would go for all-wheel drive and narrow it down to the Jag X or the Infinity G35 or a 4 wheel drive SUV.
Handling in snow is what it is about.
I hear you.We have a Passat GLS...I LOVE this car!!
Have a Wolfsburg Jetta myself right now, runs like a bat out of hell.
You should look into the Passat 4-Motion wagon if you have another one on the way or in the works. No minivans! Fahrvergnugen ueber alles, nicht wahr?

Without a doubt, the Infiniti G35ix (with all wheel drive) is THE option for bad weather handling capabilities in the northeast which also offers "class act" appointments. I came very close to making the leap to one of these myself. However, as this is the first year where the all wheel drive option has been offered such that the used market has essentially zero vehicles available, and as the sticker price of a new one is $35K, I didn't mention the G35ix based on your $30k cutoff figure. I also didn't personally feel that the actual differential in "class act" appointments of the G35ix versus the Subaru WRX was worth the $10K price differential (plus I was able to find a 'program car' WRX with 1500 miles on it for an additional $5K discount).
This is not my ideal car for under 30k, but a friend has just bought a 1 year old honda accord, 2 door. Nice car, has the navigator (GPS) and all the goodies. $20lk!!!
Me, i had my BMW and Mercedes, fine cars, but not enough power for me. So i now have a 3000GT, Mitsubishi. Had nitrous installed, NOW i face some motor problems, but oh well, it's fun to hit the switch for a couple seconds and shut down!!!
I Don't care much for Mitsubishi, but this car kept calling my name. Under $20k used of course, loaded with you name it... laptop modem which i don't use, included.
True on the list, but at this point in Florida after all those hurricanes and no sales and at the end of the month and with new models coming out,,
Sitri smells some deals............ fe fi fo fum, I smells the blood of a car salesmun...
And since we are considering used, check out

wow, 2 of the 4 iv'e narrowed it down to so far. I love the g35, so many people have it though(for good reason)Originally Posted by Sitri

Tampa since you are into BMW's, you can try the 330Xi which is all-wheel drive for the NE, but it is a 4-dr only though. Will probably run more than 30K though.
I don't like the look of the BMW SUV's though.![]()
