    Default Emotional Reactions to Songs

Do some here have sudden, strong reactions to certain songs? EX: The Cure reminds me of a beloved ex (so after hearing "Lovesong" I was wandering around the strip club with a stomachache face on...LOL)
I hate hearing the Blink 182 "Suicide Note" song, a friend of mine lost his little brother that way and I think it's too downer to play in a club. A few nights ago someone played Pearl Jam's cover of "Last Kiss" and I had to excuse myself. Too too sad!
Note to DJs: keep it happy, keep it snappy! Ha ha.

heh, i have trouble with my stage show because i often pick songs i get too 'into' and kind of forget the crowd while dancing to. perhaps a reason to let the dj pick my stuff more often.

Last night, I was driving home, and "In My Daughter's Eyes" (By Martina McBride) came on the radio. I started crying like a baby! The song's been out for quite some time, and I even have it on CD, but haven't listened to it in forever. I guess hearing it after so long struck me. ::sigh::

In my daughter's eyes I am a hero
I am strong and wise and I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
    In my daughter's eyes

In my daughter's eyes everyone is equal
Darkness turns to light and the
    world is at peace
This miracle God gave to me gives me
    strength when I am weak
    I find reason to believe
    In my daughter's eyes

And when she wraps her hand
    around my finger
Oh it puts a smile in my heart
    Everything becomes a little clearer
I realize what life is all about

It's hangin' on when your heart
    has had enough
It's giving more when you feel like giving up
    I've seen the light
    It's in my daughter's eyes

In my daughter's eyes I can see the future
A reflection of who I am and what will be
Though she'll grow and someday leave
    Maybe raise a family
When I'm gone I hope you see how happy
    she made me
    For I'll be there
    In my daughter's eyes

Oh.. But when I was dancing, whenever they played "Black" by Pearl Jam, I lost it!

We also had a manager that would play "For Crying Out Loud" By Meatloaf. I have no idea why... You can't dance to it. He was gloom & doom, and had just broken up with his wife, so he played it CONSTANTLY. We didn't have a DJ at one of the clubs, just our trusty jukebox!

Here's a story: my sister participated in the making of a drunk driving awareness film for high schools, called Every Fifteen Minutes (sadly, there was a time in the US when a person died every fifteen minutes from an alcohol related crash.) The Aerosmith song "Don't Want to Close my Eyes" was used in the film, because two students starring in the film "died" in a "drunk driving crash". On one level I was proud to see sis acting in a film to help prevent needless deaths; on the other hand, it sucked to see video of the local hospital emergency room "calling" her time of death, even though it wasn't real.
Of course, I ended up having to dance to the tune for a room full of people at a later point in time. Ughhhh...
I worked a bar where our bartender strangely requested the Kid Rock/ Sheryl Crow cover of "Pictures" during my sets. I was allowed to grimace at the crowd while dancing, since the whole bar agreed it was a downer song.

I have to choose a song that suits my mood otherwise it won't flow with my stage show. If I don't find that it's tune or lyrics aren't emotional in some sense to relate to my emotions, then that's not a tune I'll pick for my show.

By that, I won't pick a tune that makes me want to cry, just one that makes me express myself appropriately.

I feel the same way, every night I pick out music that I know I will really feel inside and will match to my mood. I flow to my music when I not only know what is about to play, but I am feeling as one with the music....

Every time I hear One Headlight by The Wallflowers I get teary, the words are so depressing when you really listen, and the guitar plucks at my heart strings, I swear. They played it towards the end of the night in a club I used to work at, I was like, why?

FoxyRoxIt, I love "One Headlight" by the Wallflowers too, but I tend to look at it as a song about determination in the face of adversity (mortality, cold world, problems, but..."me and Cinderella/ we put it all together/ we can drive it home/ with one headlight") Why does it make you sad? (For you Bob Dylan fans- you can hear the influence of Dad in Jacob Dylan's lyrics and voice.....it's creepy.)

the tune of the song makes me sad, not really a bad sad, u know how sometimes there's a good sad? Also when i first heard that song i was going through some dark dark times, so it takes me back. These are the words that get me..."so log ago I don't remember when that's when they say I lost my only friend, somethin somethin, she died easy from her brokenheart disease as i listened through the cemetary trees"...poeticly sad....i love the song at home, but not to dance to i a stripclub...Also you seem to have good taste in music...Do u like Mazzy Star? I love that band, her voice is oh so enchating but noone seems to be up on it.

I think that the saddest song I have heard recently...which I find to be one of the most deppressing songs ever is the Gary Jules cover of MAD WORLD...which is on the Donnie Darko soundtrack (orginally by Tears for Fears)...never dance to it! But good for those down days alone...

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, Worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
    Going nowhere, Going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
    No expression, No expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
    No tomorrow, No tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
These dreams in which i'm dying, Are the best Ive ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very very
    Mad World, Mad World

Children waiting for the day they feel good
    Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
And they feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, Sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, No one knew me
Hello teacher tell me whats my lesson
Look right through me, Look right through me

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
These dreams in which i'm dying, Are the best Ive ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very very
    Mad World, Mad World

    Enlargen your world

    Mad World

Yes Tori, that song is perfect for that movie.
Foxy- Mazzy is great....I play a lot of up-tempo rock at work.....then at home more of the same....I think Sarah MacLauglin from Canada is great....those crazy little dudes in Swollen Members are fantastic, pure joy to listen to.
I never realized that some people never listen to lyrics! Really, they don't hear them first. So some people don't even get it when dancers play certain tunes in the club..sad.....

So true...one of my fav songs to dance to is Seven Nation Army, by The White Stripes. Noone even listens to the words but this line is the kicker

"And if I catch ya comin' round this way I'm gonna sell it to you, and that ain't what you wanna hear but that's what I'll do"

Cause if I catch u comin round the club, I am gonna sell it to you (many a lapdance), and that ain't what they wanna hear, but thats what I'll do.

A customer will even come to tip me and I'll sing the line to them all sexy, but really im like yea sucka i'm gonna sell it to you, and yea sucka you're gonna buy it...but they don't get it.

Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb' always makes me emotional. Even when I'm sad I can act it out sexually. It's kinda hard to explain.. but i'm sure most of you know what I mean. It's only something a dancer can understand.

I love to dance to Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name Of' as well as old school Metallica. I like a variety of different music.
"And Bill, lamenting how you never see a positive drug story on the news..."Today, a young man on acid realised that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration and that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and you are the imagination of yourself. Here's Tom with the weather...!"- Bill Hicks, The Greatest Comedian Ever!
