    Default Tax tips in Canada

These tips will apply for dancers in Canada, not sure about the US. I have been preparing tax returns for the past 11 years, and if anyone has any questions or problems dealing with the government here just ask and I will try to help. In Canada any plastic surgery you have is deductible as a medical expense, just keep your receipts. Any meals you may have while at work can also be claimed. There are the usual ones, like clothing , make-up etc. If you take cabs, transit, or a car to work that is also deductible. I would use shift-charges as a deduction as you are self-employed. The most important thing is to keep all your receipts, and write down on a calendear, or in a notebook what you are claiming as income. Any other questions just ask.

Krys, for you to file a tax return in Canada you would have to get a temporay social insurance number, it would also depend on how long you plan to stay here in Canada. I don't know about your tax situation in Australia, but if you were doing your return there you would just have to convert all the figures from canadian to australian, subject to tax laws there would also dictate what you could or couldn't claim. In canada you are taxed on your world wide income, but you may be classified as a non-resident. Seeing how your job is a cash job whatever you would claim is up to you, but I didn't say that. There is no paper trail here in Canada for dancers. I would have to have more details about your situation, but if you are interested just send me a PM.

Crystal eyes I live between Niagara Falls and Toronto. I have never done a return for Quebec, I know you have to do a federal and a provincial return, you have one of the highest tax rates in Canada. If you ever need any help or have any questions just ask, I'm sure I can find out the information. If you do need someone to do your taxes I've never been to Montreal, but I've always wanted to . Send me a PM if you have any questions.

Canada's great- basically, anything you think might be deductable, is

Don't forget home office deductions if you make your own costumes or run a website, and CCA on computers, printers and cameras used for work (if you work in a city that has promo giveaways). I've even been advised that you can deduct home office for the square footage of the closet that you store your costumes in...but I haven't the balls to try that one

I don't know what this means? I get a contract and paystub every week; my agency has my SIN number, and I assume they use it in filing for my percentage of their commission income. I guess it's like that in TO...but out west, we pretty much all get paid for stage and go through agencies, so there's a heavy paper trail.

Honestly, I'm glad, too- you may be able to fudge the numbers up more where there's no paper trail, but ccra can lay the smack down just as easily, and having no paper trail 'proof' leaves you even more vulnerable.

    Feature costumes for sale!

Didn't know that Scarlett. Here in Ontario, at least from the dancers I have known, there is no contract, they are all independant contractors. Pretty much all you need is a licence in the city the club is in to dance and it is up to you to report the income. You are right ccra could come after you much easier with no paper trail, but there are no credit card receipts or anything tying your income with the club here in Ontario. The one thing they can look at is value of your possessions, ie house, car, investments, and if your income doesn't equal what you possess than there could be problems. Doing taxes for 11 years I have gotten to know what ccra is looking for and the best thing dancers could do is write down on a calendar or in a notebook what they earned each day, that way they have at least some kind of record if they ever get audited. When it comes down to it, it will still be your word against the government, so in a tax court if you have no way to prove anything, you better have a damn good tax lawyer or some kind of proof.
