Default How little sleep can you function on?

I have a day job and was thinking about dancing again, for a few months. I only want to dance weeknights. So that would leave me going to my day job on 4 maybe 4 1/2 hours of sleep after a night of dancing. I know some of you go to school, have kids, and have to get up early in the morning after a night of work. How do you do it? I'm still in the thinking about it stage. I don't want to jeopardize my day job going in obviously tired regularly.

Honestly, I don't know how long you can do that without burning out. That depends on how many nights you;re planning on dancing...a couple/few a week might be managable. Be careful...and also remember to have fun in life. Try not to get too caught up in working that you forget everything else. Ok...that sounded so cliched! Anyhow, pace yourself and see how you go....good luck!

Well said Bloodydewdrop, I own two club's and have three small children. I average 5 hour's a night ( morning really ) I work 6 night's a week and I might get one really good night of sleep of coarse my body being used to 5 hour's it's rare that I can stay in bed longer than that. Oh and forget about when I'm remodeling or god forbid doing a little work around the house. I've been working on this kinda schedule for about 6 year's and I'm 42 now my doctor say's I have high blood pressure and high colesterol. I't sux getting old too fast. I forced myself to slow down and start a fitness program to try to get back on track. In short if you were to do it a few night's a week ( no more then 4 ) and spaced it out to where you could stay healthy then it would be alright for a while.

I strongly recommend against tryng to operate on four and a half hours sleep every weekday. Maybe a couple days out of the week, but not more than that. (I drove a lot when I worked in CA and have plenty of scary f*cked up "nodding off behind the wheel " stories.) I drank coffee and catnapped to offset sleep loss from 2 jobs/ school/ double shifts, but seriously, something awful can happen if you are sleep deprived. There is plenty of research available on sleep deprivation.
I KNOW I sound like a big heavy here, but this is just my opinion. Some things aren't worth the trouble or risk.

I have to have at least 6 hours of sleep or I get very bitchy!

I prefer an 8 hour snooze...

You can do it as long as you "have to," "need to," or seriously "choose to" - BUT, it will very quickly "come out" somewhere in a negative/destructive form... in your general demeanor, your temper, your use of drugs/alcohol, etc., etc. If you start existing on this amount of sleep for an extended period, don't forget to take a close look at yourself on a regular basis - the "personality changes" will happen before you realize what's going on if you're not careful.

Get 6-8 hours no matter what. You will not be as productive if you get less ,which defeats the purpose...

No more than 8 hours though...otherwise intertia kicks in (atleast for me).

I do 6-8 hours 6 days a week, 10 hours Sunday (if I can). It works OK for me. And I'm a busy mofo.

I get burned out very easily so I do about 10 hours a night, even 8 seems little to me. If I get 5-6 the town better look out. I am not a happy camper. It's hard needing so much sleep but it's worth it, especially for my daughter and her dad who have to live with me.

I have to have 8-10 hours or my brain doesn't work. I get too grumpy if I get less than 6 hrs.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

5 hours sleep then my body wakes me up naturally. Then I do one "power nap" before work and (maybe - not always) one "power nap" at work (during my usual break in my 8 hour shift).

I found that when I started on the Goji Juice.. my sleep improved.. hence alot of other aspects of me improved. I'm thinking it is thank to the nutrients my body is receiving from it. Yes, I'm promoting Goji Juice due to the fact that it is the reason that I tend have good quality sleep (and therefore need less "actual" sleep).

I used to have to sleep 8 hours per day... now.. if I sleep more than 6.. I "over sleep" and therefore I am useless.

I need lots of sleep, 8-10 hours is ideal, but I rarely get it. Usually I average 5-6 during the week, and then I'll sleep 10-12 one day a week, if I can.
I've done the double shifts, running on 3-4 hrs., and it's tough. I can't do it anymore, I just break down, end up getting sick and then I'm done. When I was working nights over days regularly my saving grace was a getting a nap between - I would come home from my day job, sleep for 1 or 1 1/2 hours, then grab a shower and head to the club. If I got stuck at work late, or in traffic, and couldn't get my nap in, I was miserable. It can be really hard to get yourself up from that nap though if you are dead tired, I remember almost crying sometimes cause I wanted to sleep so bad.
How flexible would your schedule be? Can you work every other night? If you can manage to get a good nights sleep every other day, it could make it manageable.

Ok, this is for those who do not get the monthly Cosmo....LOL

Most experts agree that seven or eight hours of sleep per night is ideal, because any less leads to decreased alertness and mental functioning. But some people can get by on six with no problem, while others really need nine to function.

Waking up before your alarm is a sign that your getting plenty of sleep.

Well... as per my original post in this thread: I sleep 5 hours before my body wakes itself up naturally (no alarm). I then only need half an hour (max) ... usually less.. of a "power nap" type of sleep so that I can transition from being a day person to a night person (and therefore be able to work until 5am in the morning).

I'm functioning fine as far as I'm aware It is what works for the individual in the end.

I have nights where I get home at 5 AM and grap a nap before my 8 AM class, go to school all day and then go back to work. I don't do it often, but when I do, I take ProVigil. It doesn't speed me up or make me hyper, it just makes it so that my brain stays awake and alert and logical. Do a google on it and you'll find a ton of information.

I had to leave my job the other day because I had only one hour of sleep the night before (boyfriend woke me up and I couldnt fall back asleep until an hour before I had to be up for work) I was so out of it I felt like I was going to faint.

I wouldn't recommend fucking with your sleep. You need sleep. Either dance or stick to the day job.

I am in this category- I work a full 40 hour a week day job and I dance , well, I'm only scheduled to dance two nights a week, but I always get called in to work at least two extra shifts..

I can manage on 4 hours of sleep. However, my day job doesn't begin until 830 and I live only 8 minutes away- so I can get home at 3, get into bed, sleep until 730 or sometimes 745 and get in the shower, get ready in 15 and go to my day job by 830. I also go home at lunch time and take a 45 minute snooze on days that I feel that I need it. I go into my night job at 8, so when I get off at 5, I will sometimes take an hour nap if I can.. sometimes I can't.

I have a day job, and I work most nights. Up until last week I was only getting an average 3hrs sleep, 4 the most. Some nightss I would just stay up and drink lots of coffee. After a month or so I started to feel like I was in a daze, seriously, like I was high or something and I couldn't sleep when I wanted to. Now I'm gettin around 6hrs, which I think is the minimum, and I'm good. It might feel like U can do it on 4hrs for a while, but you'll burn yourself out...check out this site, it has some interesting facts on the subject.

I can function on 4 hours of sleep, but not for to long. I cant function on 4 hours of sleep each day...it will end up catching up with me. My body really needs 6 to 7 hours of sleep to stay healthy.
