    Default Chiropractors....

I thought chiropractors were quacks until my back pain drove me to one. I was happy with the results, but it's time for me to go back. I was wondering what people thought of this science.....
The doctor I saw said my back pain came from an old injury aggravated by pole dancing. He said the muscles around my ribcage were "hyperextended" in a car accident impact, and that's why I have trouble today.
    Thoughts, opinions?......

I went to a chiropractor once and all was well until he cracked my neck. I didn't like that at all I was just very uncomfortable with that. Never went back. But I did feel taller and relaxed for several days afterwards.

I've had experience with both : good and bad. It's pretty much if you find a good chiropractor stay with them.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I worked for a Chiropractor for a while not that long ago, and it was required for us to be patients if we where employees, lets just say i didn't stay working there very long. He said "adjusting me" or cracking the bones in my neck, hips, and legs would stop my migrains it did for 10min and then they came back 10xs worse. he also adjusted little children which just creeped me out, and even adjusted a child with ADD convincing the mother that it would help calm the children down, a regular little house of horrors in my opinion, give me a massage and a heating pad and i'd be happy myself

I agree that it is a personal preferance and sometimes you need to try a few out before you find a really good one. I have been working in the health field for the past 4 years as my day job, and I also suffer from really bad back pain. I went to doctor after doctor even surgeons, all they did was say here are some pills, and finally about two years ago they were trying to talk me into surgery. I decided to try a chiro first, and I am so glad I did, at first I had to see him like 3x a week but now I go about once a month sometimes twice. I have had amazing results and no surgery. I prefer that adjuster gun to the back cracker. We always suggest a chiro to our back patients at my clinic before surgery.

I worship my chiropractor. It's about finding the right TYPE of chiropractor. Some just crack people and the results are short lived. Some are looking for more long term effects and that shows through their style of adjustments. I started going everyday for two weeks, then three times a week for awhile after that. At first...it was really strange and kind of nerve wracking to hear the bones cracking but I love it now.

After one year of being adjusted, I no longer have allergies or asthma. If I could show ya'll my before and after x-rays you'd be amazed.

here's a link to my doc! Dr. mike is amazing and if anyone needs referrals to chiropractors that are great like him...just let me know...I'll ask him if he knows anyone in your area!!

I believe in them pretty strongly, but finding one that uses accepted medical science as well as chiropractic regimens can be tough.

I've always felt more comfortable using orthopaedic surgeons for diagnosis, and chiropracters for treatment. Chiropracters are not "doctors" in the generally accepted sense of the word - orthopaedic surgeons spend 14 years learning the ins and outs of the skeletal system, so I figure its worth letting them have a good look at it before I let the chiropracter start "manipulating" things.

I've talked to about 20. I've met 3 good ones. Got treated by one of the good ones, and it worked.

If they work on kids, if they want you in for long-term repetitive treatment, if they claim chiropractic as cures for tumors, hearing loss, etc., or if they see themselves as general practitioner types of doctors - these are warning signs.

I go regularly to a Chiropractor, so does my son. He had his first visit when he was just a few days old. If you're not sure about any of the procedures, I recomend reading about Chiropractic so you get to know and understand what's going on and how the adjustments or lack of them may effect your body. Some Chiropractors are definatly better than others so it might pay to ring round and see what each has to offer. You might also want to consider an Osteopath instead. I find they tend to spend more time treating patients and massage you first before doing the adjustments. The adjustments can sound bad, but they are actually gentler on your spine than sneezing.
My current Chiropractors rock!!! They adjust other bones not just the spine and also work in conjunction with a Podiotrist and Chirodontist. I've had my hands, wrists, elbows, collor bone, head and knees adjusted aswell as my neck and back - they all get put out from dancing from time to time. Every visit lasts at least 25 mins as opposed to some visits with other Chiropractors that lasted 5 minutes or under. The Chiropractor I see interstate is also a Homeopath and does massage.

A few years I got bucked off of a horse and it really threw my back out of line, I went to one chiro who used a gun...and he sucked...he threw all these whacko theories at me and I didn't feel any better. Then I tried a different one, and he didn't touch my back until he got a full set of X-rays, and it was then that the problem surfaced...if you stood behind me looking at my spine there is a C shaped curve in the middle of it, and I also have herniated discs and beginning signs of scoliosis...So! Yes, Chiro's are amazing practitioners when you find the right one...I don't know what i'd do without mine.

The other way around (a Chiropractor who also incorporated massage) would be the best for me. If anyone can refer me to someone on the Gold Coast?

I would only be able to afford to go once a week right now due to not being on any health plans (where the cost is included/reimbursed etc).

From my experience what has weeded out the good chiropractor to the bad has been the ones that ask for xrays and will not touch you before seeing them. One time after a rugby injury to my neck/shoulder from a collasped scrum. I was hurting so bad and my sports medicine/ ortho surgeon guy was just giving me vicodin which didn't help much and he would just rather do numerous trigger point injections (which hurt so so much) of cortisone and botox to deaden the nerve, so I decided to go to a new chiropractor. This guy without xrays or anything wanted to align me, he said that my alignment was out and just a readjustment would fix me up. This guy wanted to put his hands on my neck after a injury I had. Well needless to say I ran out of there and found a good sports injury center that has great massage and physical therapist, plus a really good acupuncture guy.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I have scoliosis as well as arthritis in my lower back, and very little cartilage is left in the lower lumbar region. Because of this, I will periodically have issues that make it difficult and painful for me to do anything, including laying down motionless.

A couple of years ago I visited a chiropractor. The various body cracks he put my body through were shocking, but helpful. Additionally, he hooked up some electrodes to my specific area of sensitivity (boy, that just sounds wrong doesn't it?) and it was pure heaven.

The story is that after about 27, our bodies begin to consume the cartilage....unless you do something to stimulate the spine constantly...so supposedly ballerinas do not have these issues. But that has always made me very curious about all of you dancers. Seems you should have the same sort of benefits.

Yeah, my first chiropractor used the stupid gun and it did not a damn thing. He did take X-ray images, but basically told me that there was no point in hoping for a correction of my condition (slight scoliotic curvature). So I jumped ship.

Then I went to a tiny little woman that took X-rays, did some body scan/nerve response testing and she went to work on me with traditional chiropractic manipulation. It made a big difference in the feeling in my back, and while I haven't been able to see her for over a year, I intend to once I get around to making that a priority again.

Now if I could just find a good local professional massage therapist, I wouldn't need any other health care providers....

Sometimes I just use my boyfriend, he picks me up and does this thing and my spine cracks, super bad for me probably (since I can also crack my back myself, and do sometimes) but it provides temporary relief.

On the contrary, Tiff...cracking your back is a way of stimulating your vertabrae....it's good for it...as long as you don't do it to the point of painful stress.

I used to do this for my ex as well. It was the highlight of her day usually, since she stood on her feet for 10 hours at a time. Also made her considerably more amourous, but that's a side effect...

Since I took up stripping I no longer have lower back problems at all. Prior to that I always did. I find my adjustments do tend to last longer too, and my back is definatly better generally than it was before stripping. My main problem is my neck - it's an old injury and dancing with such long hair (dreadlocks past my ass) throws it out sometimes, as does some of the ridiculous positions I put myself into whilst dancing, lol.

Doh, I posted this yesterday but it posted twice so I tried to delete 1 post but now they're both gone...

GCG - I used to go to Jeff Hale (Geof?), he's and Osteopath and has a practive both at Palm Beach and Southport. He always gives a massage before the adjustment and he's very good!
I now go to Currumbin beach Chiropractic after a friend recomended them. In 18 years of different Chiropractors and Osteopaths they're definatly the best! They occasionally massage, but not usually, but the level of treatment I get there is fantastic!

Minor rant: I wish you ladies didn't have those shoes. I understand the rationale, but they're not doing a damn thing for you, health-wise, your back or anywhere else.

Minor rant ended. I know I'm in a very small minority with that sentiment. I'll shut up about it now for a few more months.
