    Book Club anyone ?

Any readers in the house? What are your fav books? authors? Anyone interested in doing a book club group in the member boards?

Here I'll start -- I enjoy all sorts of books and plays, but read mostly fiction- I like modern writers as well as classics.

Some of my favs are: Our Town, The Good Earth and ofcourse Catcher in the Rye! My favorite Shakespeare is A Midsummer Nights Dream. I also got really into Dracula which led me to some more light weight moderns- I have most of Anne Rice's books and a few Grisham's and Kings too- I really dug FireStarter. I have read many of Oprah's choices too ( Good Earth is on it this years list- I read it many years ago but recommend it- it isn't to long and reads smooth and easy) some of my favorites off her list have been Mother of Pearl and White Oleander which BTW is much, much better in book form than the movie was- and the movie was pretty good too so

The Gift of Death by Jacques Derrida. I just finished that one... I'm probably going to read The question of God by Armand M. Nicholi Jr. But I like fun reads too. Haven't read too much of Oprah's choices ... I think I read one she's undone or something like that. Some of Anne Rice's get a little neo-gothic for me.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

She's Come Undone was an awesome book, but I'm not going to read anything just because Oprah says to. I'm glad she recommended The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, that's good. I think Confederacy of Dunces is great. I devour books, my all time favorite that I know I read at least 3 times a year would be Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchet. American Gods by Neil Gaiman was really good, I could just make a massive list, I LOVE TO READ. Any Nietzsche translated by Kaufman, also Kalil Gibran.

As for Rice you might try the few that aren't in a set like the Vampires such as Cry from Heaven. The Witch books are better imo than her vampire ones.

There is a really good one from Oprah's list a few years back that I can't remember the name right now- it's about a missionary family who moves to Africa- arg. if I remember it I'll post it. I usually read a bookn a few times and then donate it otherwise I'd have a room full !

I've read all of the Rice books and like fiction. Are you thinking we would all buy the same book and discuss it?

I wanted to do a book thread! I was thinking about Jack London- I Googled him, and his biography alone is advertisement enough for his canon of work. He was also very ahead of his time.
I just sent a friend "The Prince of Tides" by Pat Conroy- that is the only novel that literally made me laugh and cry.

Hmmmm. It depends. Are your book related opinions as strong as your political opinions?

Are you envisioning the traditional type book club, where we pick a book, pretend to have read it, and sit around drinking while saying, largely, irrelevant things? I think we already have plenty of opportunity for that.

Or are you suggesting what has occurred in most of the last few posts - listing favorite authors and books and making commentary on recently read and favorite books with more of a freeflow form?

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

    Well --
I thought we see if there was interest- seems there is some so maybe we could vote what kind we'd prefer . Either free form like this or pick a book and all read it then post our thoughts opinions about it .

I'll wait a few days so others can read this, then I'll start a thread in the members area with a poll .

    Sound ok ?

I am currently reading "The Buddha of Suburbia" by Haneif Kureishi. I would recommend anything he writes. His stories are a peek into lives of people very different from me-Londoners of indian muslim heritage.

I would love to have a Book Club section, I am an avid reader.

I'm a voracious reader, and the school library usually has book club types of books.
    Neil Gaiman rawks.
Right now the books I'm making the bf read:
    The Princess Bride
    The Dispossesssed
    The Golden Compass
    Glittering Images
    Coraline
Wheels of Fire [I think is the title]
    American Gods

So these are pretty much my favorite books.

Well I started a SW Book Club thread in the members area and I put up a poll to start so we can decide what style discussion we want.

I put a 30 day voting window in the poll so that anyone interested could get their voice heard.

Lets see how things go !

I would DEFINATELY be interested in a book club! My favorites are Aztec by Gary Jennings, Pillars of the Earth, Les Mis by Victor Hugo (took me awhile but I did it!), Monsoon or anything else by Wilbur Smith, etc. Reading is my alltime favorite thing to do so please count me in if there is a book club!

Good Job on the Wilbur Smith. I think I have gone through 3 of his series. I love books about living in Africa.

A great book on stripping is Strip City by Lily Burana, I read it twice, it's her true story turned to a novel, it's so down to earth and something we could all relate to

I'm reading St. Mawr by D.H. Lawrence right now- it's about a horse uh that the woman was sort of captivated by his wild spirit and about her life in a couple too.
I'm still also working on Lolita by Nabokov. I like the book alot better than the movie.
I like to read poetry before I go to bed too it helps me relax.
I read Strip City too and really liked it. I read Ivy League Stripper too, liked Strip City a bit better. Lapdancer is another good book about exotic dancing.

For a fun read I really like The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter- it's adult fairy tales and sort of subtly sexy.

Also I love searching for books on amazon (I usually do that before I buy books) so I can read customer reviews first and learn more about them. Also on amazon has every book imagainable so can avoid going to the book store and they don't have a specific book.

I like finge non fiction such as anything by icehouse slim, like "pimp", books like "tales of times square" which is about the good old days? of times square in the 70's and before. Also "Super casino" about the new Vegas is a great read. And of course my favorite desperation book, "leaving Las Vegas". Or for lighter reading, Limony Snicket....truly enjoyable in a my life is great in comparison sort of way. A book club would be great.

I like to read true crime books for the most part. As for my favorite author's, Anne Rice, Mary Higgins Clark, John Grisham, V.c. Andrews.

I watch Oprah when I get the chance. There was a set that I read. It began with the book "Child Called It". This continues to go through this man's life. I loved all three books.
